Are Gamers the Worst Kind of People? - MyGaming Column

To be fair, when you have a group of people in any sort of setting, the same rules apply. It's just more noticeable with gamers as we have an open platform to type / yell on voice chat for all to hear.

Take for example, driving. There are always assholes on the road, you just can't hear them in your box (which you are driving like an idiot) from their box. Not once can you tell me you end up behind some guy doing minus 40 in 120 zone and you say "check this oke, I bet he is wearing a cap / hat / fez". Of course, in much nastier language! That was a good example of lots of people in close proximity to each other doing the same thing. Now take that sunhat wearing old dude and replace him with a 1 kill (stolen) and 15 deaths noob in HoN / LoL / DotA. On your team. Affecting your score and wasting your time. Yes, it is virtual but most people don't have a lot of time and the 45 minutes you are wasting in a team game where someone is actively playing for the other team is bound to bring out the worst in most people.

Me, I just leave well enough alone. I don't feel the need to openly abuse some new guy, in fact I sometimes white knight! Very rarely though, but when the "rager" pulls a stupid stunt, I like to remind him of it, sarcastically!

So it isn't a fair thing to say that gamers are the worst type, you just see it a lot because of how the abuse manifests itself.

I never cease to be amazed that Apple gets away with their model, but clearly they've made a lot of money off it.

My issue with offering specific free games is that I find it arbitrarily limiting. Why does it have to be those specific games instead of any two games up to some value? And this doesn't just apply to something like the PSN offer, but any time games are bundled with hardware. I don't get upset about it, I merely choose not to buy in the latter case.

Boycotts are an entirely appropriate way to tackle company behaviour of which we don't approve. The fact that the called for boycott doesn't happen or had no real effect means not many people cared. If they did it would rightly hurt the offending company and they'd change their behaviour or go bankrupt. That applies just as much to ridiculous anti-copying measures. It is good that a game is a market failure and possibly even kills the company if the measures really irritate people.

The real problem is that there is a lot of noise, but no action. People complain loudly then roll over and buy the product anyway, instead of choosing the option of doing without and appropriately chastising the offending company.

I think game buyers would have to work really hard to become bigger whining snivelling brats than the game companies themselves. They actually need an attitude adjustment.
