Are modern games too short?

Yeah Hiro
I have less than an hour a day to play anything, so having everything nice and tightly scripted and shorter than your average sandbox title works wonders for me.

I've never really been that bothered by a games length. It's not the size that matters, but the enjoyment you get from it (I wish that's what she said "whistling:). In the end I don't feel cheated by the high price of a game if the 4-5 hours I spent on completing it was fun and enjoyable. If fact, larger games feels more like a project I need to get into, and that can eat up way too much time that I don't have to play games.

Also, isn't our whole society moving towards a more fast paced living standard? Everything is "fast thing" and "easy that". It seems that people nowadays just don't have time for all the things we want/need/can do in a day. Which is probably why games are getting shorter. And also, I remember seeing a statistic on this very site that showed only like 30% or so of games people play actually get's finished. I know that there are a fair few games that I've played and enjoyed too bits, but never finished.

back when i was a student, i had all the time in the world, but no money to buy games. i know have money for games, but barely any free time. #FirstWorldProblems :(

Haha, I once said the same thing, and some silly member replied by asking me what do I do during 1am to 5am. Supposedly that's premium time for gaming but me being me I prefer some shut eye at that time.

that 1am to 5am session is not sustainable :D you be a zombie at work. i guess the lucky "yungins" who do this are then able to sleep from 5am till afternoon. alas, some of us have work to go to :(

As i said in my previous post. The length is not the issue most of the time. It's the price that get's to me. R300-R450 for 5-10 hours of gameplay is sweet but R700-R900 feels like robbery

i try and buy games for PC on Steam Sale or for console via trading (disc) or sales (dload). don't recall the last game i paid full price for.

There are some new IPs which I feel may have been a bit short, most notably: Remember Me.

Longer is better. 100+ hours like DAI pls.

but that tends to be padded with way too many "go there, fetch this, bring it back" and "kill XX/YY beasts" type quests. i have heard similiar "padding" complaints regarding Alien Isolation, which is the only reason i have held off getting it.

I don't mind this, 'cause a lot of the time you get a decent items on your travels; what's more, fast travelling is available.

but i have OCD and i want to do ALL OF THE QUESTS! and sadly, due to lack of time, i end up then just getting bored of the game. 25 hours into DAI that is what has happened to me. which is why i'm enjoying the more focused Lords of the Fallen experience.

As long as the game makes me want to come back for more, then I don't mind it. Some RPG games have some of the dumbest optional side quests just to pad the game. If a games follows the "rinse, repeat" module then I tend to get bored of it, unless the story is really well done.

The problem I find is that nowadays games are way to easy. Normal difficulty is a joke compared to like 10 - 15 years ago.

But also those games are purpose made to be difficult games... Most games these days are considerably easier...

yeah, i guess you are right in terms of the average game of today, versus average game of yesteryear. but also bear in mind that the NUMBER of games we have available to us now, is exponentially higher than in the past. given this competition for time, i am pretty happy with games being easier and shorter :)

That's why those games are so appealing. People want a decent challenge for a change.

the counterpoint being that the games getting frustrating and due to lack of time, you end up just leaving them and moving onto something else ?
