Att Joker: Graphics card query

I'm going to highjack the thread a bit, I was just want to check before I tell my brother what to do.

I gave him my old GTX570, however he says it keeps on restarting his PC every now and then and runs very hot. I cleaned the fan and heatsink myself before giving it to him, and he has also replaced the thermal paste on the card since then, however it is still running hot and giving him problems.
I remember the card running hot but but never had problems with it I can recall.

However, he is now looking at buying a new card in the R2500 - R3000 range. I've had a look and the best looking card in that range seems to be the Galax GTX960 EXOC for R3k.
The Joker do you have any other suggestions? The only other cards in that range is the 270X, but it looks to be slower in all the benchmarks.

I know with my HD5970 and my previous board, the card would over heat and run at ~100'c under load. I thought this normal, but I would start to get artifacts or game crashes, or even driver crashes. Since changing to the new board, it actually made the card run cooler. So it could have also been a voltage thing. I also remember having to over volt the card on the previous board to make it stable.

Perhaps this could be a similar issue?

And as you know I'm in the market for a card and also looked at both you looking at and personally I feel the GTX 960 is the better card.

Just my 2c.

My brother recently upgraded to a new CPU and motherboard, so if that is the problem he won't be upgrading again. The GTX260 he had was working just fine.

I can suggest to him to perhaps change the voltage on the 570 to see if that helps. Temperature wise he hasn't seen it go above 75 degC. The restarts were happening whenever he gamed, so I suggested he change the fan curve and that helped a lot with the restarting, but it still happens from time to time. So I'm not sure if Asus put some silly protection on the card that makes it restart if it hits ~80 degC. I can't remember having that many problems with the card.

He has a 585W PSU, so that shouldn't be a problem either.

But yeah, the 960 definitely looks like the better card, I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something before telling him to drop R3k :)

He wanted to spend R2.5k max, but I told him to rather spend a bit more and get a lot of extra bang for buck.

2nd Hand 280X will be a better performing card, especially if he plans on playing games like Witcher 3 or GTA 5.

Edit: That 585W Psu...is that a Gigabyte 585W?

Yip, I've seen one literally explode and rip the case open.
I've also seen many many of them failing and taking hardware with them.

Yes, yes it is. Gigabyte Odin :3

He is not a Radeon fan at all, I've been trying to tell him to give them a chance, but he is stubborn as hell. I'll see if I can convince him though.

Sites to use for 2nd hand GPU's? Gumtree, Carbonite?

Edit: My old PC (the one the wife is using now) also has the same Gigabyte PSU

My card was starting to run hotter. Pulled it out and there was a ton of dust in it. Just cleaning that out, sorted out my extra heat. If you do this and clean/re-apply heat paste is also a good thing to do from time to time.

The Joker, I have been looking at 2nd hand cards and my brother said he'd really prefer a Geforce. I've found both GTX670 and 680 cards second hand for below R3k.

I've had a gander at benchmarks, and it would seem that the 670 is a tad faster than the 960, but not by much. Would the 670 be a better bet than the 960 or not really?

I'm just waiting for a reply on the ad for the GTX680, because if that is still available I'd have my brother go for that one.

670 would still be faster than a 960, also I'm sure if you placed a wanted ad for a GTX770 on carbonite for around R3300 you'll find a couple of them.

Alternatively he could just save and look for a bargain 970.
He really does have to do something about that psu..lol

Thanks. He is being so difficult now I might just throttle him. He wants to spend R3k max, so he won't go for the 970 (unless he can get one for R3k that is). So the options seem to be new 960, or 2nd hand 670/680. He's raging now about the 'ridiculous-ness' of it. "Why is a card that is 2 generations newer, slower than the old cards?" "What is the point?" Boe boe bie boe, I might just physically hurt him when I see him :3

And it isn't like he is technologically impaired, so perhaps he is just yanking my chain. Even more reason for me to kick his ass :D

I'll vouch on the 670 and 770's performance. Amazing cards

I had a 670 myself, so I know it is an awesome card :)

fek I'm getting amped for this. The new update to Assetto Corsa has made me all ansie, and to see it in full detail @ 1080p
