Avatar!!!!!!!!!!

Agree with Azimuth.

It also didn't have any memorable quotes (i.e. "This is Sparta!" or "Are you not entertained!?"). For a movie to be remembered, it has to have cool quotes. Not "I see you" bleh!

I just watched the movie and it is my movie of the year, yes the the ending was a bit predictable, but there is no denying that it takes a genius to imagine such a world and to bring it to life in a way that James Cameron has. For those of you who expect a detailed plot with many twist and turns, you will be disappointed, in this movie you just need to sit back relax and enjoy the visual masterpiece that is Avatar.

I agree totally :) Was absolutely brilliant to watch in 3D

I think Sherlock Holmes was better. Saw the primere at Canal Walk on the 26th. AWESOME film. Avatar wasn't a bad movie, it is just a victim of its own hype. And for those of you thinking of trying the game. STAY AWAY!!!!

So what do you think is the underlying message from the movie? For me I think its mostly about corporate greed in our world and that there are certain individuals who will do anything to make money, regardless of the impact it has on our planet.

I also like the way he used the 3D element, it was not a constant "poke a spear in your face" type of effect but a nice subtle element that draws the viewer into the experience.

/agrees.

avatar has great looks, but crappy plot.

been done to death.

mining company VS
save the owls in the ground
save the trees
save the wolves
save the people
save the <insert>

the selling point, and make no mistake about it was zomg is it's looks and that's it.

I still like how the flying mountains in AVATAR resemble the floating rocks found in Riven Earth (jungle portions) in Guild Wars - Eye of the North.

There's no denying it's a visual effects and 3D milestone, but once you look past all the razzle dazzle, the rest of the movie is very average indeed. While the actual avatar plot device is somewhat original, it's really just a means to an end - and it's the same end we've already seen countless times. It's also almost unbearably mawkish in parts.

I also think it's really only worth seeing in 3D. I'm not likely to ever bother watching it again.

I've seen much better movies this year, including Inglourious Basterds, Star Trek, and Where The Wild Things Are.

Agreed, except I feel that D-9 is worth a mention.

I liked the music and score well enough, I suppose, but the foley and whatnot was nothing much special. Certainly not enough for me to have even really noticed it most of the time. The assault rifles had a nice punch, though.

Maybe it's just our crappy cinema sound setup (I wouldn't put it past them) but the music was a bit overloud at times...and make no mistake, I love my movie OST's.

You're dead right there...

All I'm saying is "Here come vuh sweetie man!"

You could get that message out of Aliens if you wanted to - and Sigourney Weaver even starred in that one as well :D

Comparing different genres of movies to each other and tauting it as the best and what they represent is not the correct thing to do.
There is no movie that has ever been shot like AVATAR in the way it was done - the cinematography is simply excellent. It is visually superior to anything we have seen this year, imo at least.
And No, the story and plot is not great, or even original in places, but it also is not bad or terrible or old.
The scientific parts of the movie - actual planet (location, existence) and its moons, the six-legged animal species + flora, atmosphere of the planet, etc.) is actually, factually very close to reality and quite plausible, much better than other (even non-sci-fi, fantasy, action-adventure) movies that were put out in 2009.

There is a reason there are different categories for movies at the Golden Globes and the Oscars - each categories have great movies in their own right.

Having broken through the $1B worldwide mark (in 3 weeks!), there is no denying the absolute pulling power and intrigue AVATAR demands , either via word-of-mouth and /or marketing... I mean they did spend like $250 million on the marketing alone :)

Only Titanic is in its path, and the big boat can possibly be sunk with its $1.8B revenue total.

And as for memorable quotes, what about these...

Col. Quaritch: You are not in Kansas anymore. You are on Pandora, ladies and gentleman.
Selfridge: [from trailer] This is why we're here, because this little gray rock sells for twenty million a kilo.
Jake Sully: [from trailer] They've sent us a message... that they can take whatever they want. Well we will send them a message. That this... this is our land!
Neytiri: [from trailer] You should not be here.
[from trailer]
[to Jake, before he becomes an Avatar]
Dr. Grace Augustine: Just relax and let your mind go blank. That shouldn't be too hard for you.
Col. Quaritch: Gives me the goosebumps!

"I See you" is one of the less memorable quotes imo.

Also, don't tell me any of you forgot, or missed, the name of the ore they are after on Pandora (which should scientifically rather be classified as a mineral) - Unobtainium - an old sci-fi insider-joke.

I could barely believe 2.5hrs flew by the way it did.

Errr this proves my point ,its an element , we use in physics to give values to unknown , it is used by theoretical physicists the world over , to help bring equations to balance .
If you needed to create a new something say a teleportation Pad
if you had the math working but now needed a hull or shell but it couldnt be made of anything we have know so we would have to design or create or find something new

to get your theory approved , we would substitute the unkown with unobtanium

LOL yes you cant hold it but it is used.

Man, I enjoyed the movie as did most of my friends and family, but I still do not understand those guys (grown males sitting next to me in the movie) who clap and go mad during (as well as after) the movie!

Come on guys if they were throwing money out of the screen I would understand!
