Boot Camp

Raven Gold

Local Boy Hunter
I realised something. Who elce misses those opening "Boot Camp" missions in FPS games? They sorta just, faded away. I liked them, they gave games an added atmosphere of authenticity.

I loved them dude. Loved the opposing force one:)

You get a Boot camp kind of thing in both CoD4 and MW2, I've not seen them fade away as such, they still seem to be there. Even the first Battlefield did something similar.

Maybe designers just assume everyone know how to play shooters....
COD 4 had a training course as did MW2. So it would seem they are still around.

I was just thinking about the opposing force boot camp as well :D.

Yeah the opposing force one was awesome. "Listen up Maggot, by the end of the day, I'll have you eating danger and crapping victory".

Loved the rope physics in that too :)

You want real boot camp? Go play America's Army :D

Gotta go through an entire training session before you even get to see the enemy (even medical tests before becoming a medic). And don't think you'll be picking up a sniper-rifle in the first couple of hours either.

Not so sure about the recruiting bit, I do know that it was developed with input from the US Army. It's a very different ball-game from BF, CoD, and the like. Charging in Rambo style is a guaranteed way to get yourself killed. And there's no health-packs, no recovery of health - the best a medic can do for you is to stop you from bleeding to death (that's if you survive getting shot in the first place).

It's doubly awesome because it's free. I don't know how the game has changed from AA2 which I used to play, but I'm downloading AA3 atm - so I'll be giving it a run soon.

Right now I'm downloading 2.83, I can't find a torrent for 3 and I ain't touching steam untill I can get a 4mb line.

Ofcourse it was to recruit people for the army. They did pay for the development of it.

Back on topic. The CoD4/6 training levels were mentioned, they aren't really boot camp missions since there very abridged and do little more than to showcase some new features in the games (4: shooting through walls. 6: rolling grenades.) I miss the boot camps that treat you like a complete rookie to FPSs. and the most recent game I can remeber that does that was MoH:PA

LOL everybody remembers the Opposing Force Bootcamp! :) (wish I could get that game, never finished it)
otherwise I don't really miss them....

The COD2 one was awesome, where you had to crawl under barbed wire fencing and for the russians you'd practive grenade tossing with potatoes etc.
