brand preference.... is it silly ?

i'm curious as to shopping for a new rig it once again bugged me which motherboard to take. sure the intel works ok, but last asus i had way back was quite awesome. though nowadays you also get dfi and evga for example. in the end i decided to go the asus route and get myself a decent one i can afford from asus for my cpu i'm lookin for.

now that the story is over ;) :D. here comes my question. is brand preference a silly notion to have ? because apparently brand B over A in motherboards have better quality components and will last your longer, or so they say.

looking over to vga cards- from somewhere i read that all pcb's comes from the same factory so apart from "cool" extras what does a brand really give you. no not the argument if Nvidia is better than Ati this is more like XFX vs Msi vs Gigabyte and so on.
 
I used to be a brand bitch, not so much anymore, apart from motherboards. I will only ever buy ASUS or MSi.
 
Like Mappy, I also used to be a brand bitch. Though I realized over time that it doesn't matter what brand I take, sometimes things break and in many things the speed and quality are the same.

The ASUS motherboard I wanted was out of stock so I ended up getting a Gigabyte and it worked fine. Haha for the hard drive I thought that Seagate has always been a reliable brand and then I ended up with one of those drives with the firmware issue and later also a SMART fail.

So yeah these days I don't care as much about the brand.
 
Like above ,I also dont care much for brand , unless its an essential component , for me its RAM and HDD but everything else Im flexible.
 
I'm a brand Bitch ....i dont like the idea of being a brand bitch... but I sometimes feel that because they have name... its something they have to live up to.... to keep there name a "Good brand" ... if they keep releasing crap people will stop wanting to buy their brand of products...
 
i'm not a general believer in the brand.
but for some components i would buy brand x over brand y (specially motherboards)
gfx cards, as you said, are almost always made the same. Manufacturers just slap their sticker on and call it theirs.
big thing about brands usually is their warranty or support... and in SA that doesnt help us much.

But there are a few things that aren't as simple to benchmark. Thats where I prefer a good brand eg: screens, a mouse, cases, PSU, MB. DVD etc.
 
As with everyone else i too was only interested in brand names. And i came to the same conclusion, no matter what the brand u some times just get the faulty one. One of my fav site to read up on new tech and to compare speed\review is tomshareware dot com.

Does that make me a bad person?

As for Motherboards, I've had several MSI, ASUS and Gigabyte boards, not a single gigabyte board has died (still got a P4 mobo running like a dream), but all the MSI and ASUS ones eventually did.
 
I like some brands more than others.
Mostly due to some brands having a better warranty.
Like ASUS.
I payed 1K more for my screen card but I got 2 years longer warranty.
I guess it comes down to personal preference , how much money you have and what you want at the end of the day.

I love seagate hard drives as Ive have good experiences with the brand.
Some people hate seagate . One bad experience with a brand can completely put you off it , even though it might be an excellent brand.

Im not a brand hog by any means , I read reviews before buying something and i love looking at benchmarks.

If someone has tested a product and the product has proven itself , im keen to buy it.

Nah it doesn't make you a bad person, just one who went ever have as wide a choice selection as other people. :p I also prefer Intel and Nvidia but I have switched to AMD in the past. I get whichever offers the best value for money at the time.

Seagate however... I've never had problems with any of the other makes of harddrives, but I won't ever buy a Seagate again after all the trouble I went through last year.
 
Seagate's external hardrives are a disaster - like Solitude I'll never go near them again.
As for brand preference in general, it's not silly at all IMO - I'll probably always go for the Gigabyte, Intel, Asus ranges because I know them,they're constantly recommended and I've never had any problems with any of them. When you're spending lots of cash on something you're not going to take a chance with something you're unfamiliar with. Switching brands to AMD and ATI after working with Nvidia and Intel for years may be daunting for some people.

I've been called a graphics whore so brand bitch fits me fine :D

It is silly - Do investigative research and get the best, which is within your budget levels, of course. To some degree, you have to be sensible about your shopping as well.
Basing a purchase on emotion is not a very good idea.

Computer components companies are competitive and quite often the different companies release products that are superior to the others.

I have used different vendor GPU's, CPU's, Mobo's and HDD's without too many issues.
 
I've never been a fan of any brand. I've always made my purchase on value for money - bang for buck. Whoever offers me the best deal gets my purchase, it's that simple. Obviously not skimping on quality. :)
 
Same here, bang for buck has been my motto when buying pc kit. But sometimes I am cautious with buying a new motherboard. Its a bit like TV's doesn't really matter what make. With graphics cards and processor you dont have much choice anyway.

got nailed hard on both asrock m/b and his 4850. both had factory issues. the asrock i replaced with an intel dragon tail and his 480 with bfg 260 gx maxxcore oc.
