Buying games on release day is a bad idea

I got burned with the last pre order i made... And its haunting me now... I really want to get a few games that are coming out on launch day, but the cons just out weigh the pro's at this stage of the game...

It is becoming increasingly more difficult to decide on taking the plunge on new releases. I agree on collectors but even then it needs to be a good bundle now before it entices me enough to make the purchase.

I really miss the days of a good game being released with single player content to last more than a day. DLC is all well and good but give us a full game and add more content later. Don't force us to buy everything extra... It is getting mighty old now :S

I think most of my recent buys have been from steam / origin sales anyway. Why spend R600 on a game that is only really going to last 8 hours...

Not only are the games very pricey on release, but there are always problems with the servers if its an online game.

Use WoW for an example, EVERY expansion the servers bomb out due to the high demand, and you are in the queue more than in the game itself

Naa, I tend to wait for GOTY editions. I got seriously burned buying Skyrim on pre-order only to have the Legendary Edition launch later at a much lower price I bought the base edition for. I'm getting sick and tired of short games filled with copious cut-scenes and useless monologues. I don't want DLC to "fix" an ending or to add additional missions (I'm looking at you Mass Effect 3 N7 edition). 3-5 Massive DLC packs mostly adding additional missions are fine. But these Day 0 DLCs and Collectors/Special Editions that give you a couple of extra skins and maybe an additional weapon or two is absolute bulldust.

Can i ask why??? is it purely because of the price drop? or does it come more down to bugs and fixes, cause i kind of understand paying a premium for new releases (like you would in a video shop, or any shop for that matter with a bargain bin). Granted i didnt expect that drastic a drop so quickly, But do you know how much your new car price drops, the second you drive it off the showroom floor?

just playing devils advocate

I think some companies try to rush to get the games released, not getting everything 110%. And adding all of there initial ideas for the game after release. Hence all the patches and skins and and and... They should finish a game properly before releasing it at all

OK Mr Devil :P

You buy Evolve right now, have you seen how DLC is added ? Just as one example.

I cannot stand games being released and they add DLC from release for no good reason at all. I mean release a game, 99% bug free, let us enjoy it and THEN add DLC a few months down the line.

I've bought every game I've looked forward to on release and I've never been burnt. Maybe with AC Unity, but not because of bugs etc (I didn't have many) but just because it wasn't as good as I expected and didn't like being restricted to the city after Black Flag's varying locales. The story was very underwhelming as well.

Mostly I don't preorder, but it's not necessarily as black and white as the article implies.

I'm going to preorder SC2 Legacy of the Void. Currently preordering GTA v-Five PC. Have I been burned by previous preorders? Yes, of course. I'm still very bitter about Medal of Honour: Doorfighter.

It's not that much of a money issue for me. Sure everyone wants to save a buck, but it doesn't make sense to be a scrooge with games (I will not pay $7.50! I'll wait till it's on sale for $5!) but then pay R100+ for a movie ticket and popcorn to see Avengers 2.

I think the issue is preordering willy-nilly. New IP's or iterations shouldn't be preordered because there's very little to go on. Preordering is about trust. I'm pretty confident that Blizzard will deliver a great game with SC2LotV, but with new games coming out like Order 1866, why would anyone preorder? omwcooltrailer?

I also don't buy games after seeing a friggin awesome trailer; Thanks for that John Romero with your Daikatana shit you unleashed on us.

Daikatana Trailer for reference

The last pre order i made was for dying light, then like 3 or 4 days before the game was supposed to ship, they announced a month delay in the physical copies, so the digital version went on sale as planned at the end of Jan, but the digital copies only arrive end of Feb... This seriously put me off pre ordering...

Ok, that makes sense to me, thanks for the info - i will wait to buy games on release or after

Look to be honest with you, im so keen on a few games that are coming out that i may HAVE to pre order them... Not saying i never will again, but it seems like a safer option to go to a shop and buy the game...

Safest option is still to get a demo or a "demo" and make your decision to part with your hard earned cash based on that.

I dont know, playing a demo for me sometimes ruins the game... I hate it when the Demo is like the first 10 minutes of a game... Then I have to redo the part when i actually get the game...

Not always, some titles (specifically Steam/Origin titles) will use the savedata generated by the Demo so no more replaying the first level/10 minutes
