2014's Call of Duty "best ever created"

Sledgehammer Games revealed as developer of this year's installment; Activision moving to a three-year, three-studio development cycle for Call of Duty titles.

Activision Blizzard today announced some interesting news for its Call of Duty franchise. First, the publisher revealed that Sledgehammer Games will lead development on this year's game, which CEO Bobby Kotick described as "perhaps the best Call of Duty game ever created."

No further details on 2014's Call of Duty have been announced, but the game is rumored to be a new installment in the popular Modern Warfare series. Sledgehammer previously collaborated on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Also of note, Activision revealed today that it is moving to a three-year, three-studio development cycle for Call of Duty titles. Previously, the franchise was developed on a two-year interval. Infinity Ward launched games during odd-numbered years, while Treyarch released titles during even-numbered years.

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said this move will allow developers to have extra time to not only create new features to help push the brand forward, but also so they can spend more time polishing each games. Installments in the Call of Duty franchise will still be released on a yearly basis.

I really don't understand how these games keep selling every year with very little innovation in each title but I guess they will continue to do so for a while, now that they are to keep releasing them annually.

Sure.. that's what they said about the CoD:dog edition...

".... three-studio development cycle for Call of Duty titles..."
Seriously? They require another studio to texture the same thing? :wtf:

rumour is next one will have a cat and a robot companion, and take place within the earth's core "whistling::p

Well hopefully the responses in this thread are evidence that people are getting sick of virtually the same game being released every year. As soon as COD dies, we'll hopefully start getting back some innovation instead of other games trying to cash in on their fanbase by incorporating near-identical gameplay mechanics.

I wonder if the 3 year devlopment cycle means they could create a new engine? Likelihood? I'm not holding my breath.

The thing is, I highly doubt we're even remotely their target market/audience, especially considering that we keep complaining, they don't really heed most of these complaints, yet they break sales records... Every. Single. Time.

As long as their audience is happy with them, they're here to stay, breaking sales records. Every. Single. Time.

That's just it, they sell a good casual FPS and that is what sells millions. They keep the same basic engine so it fits any PC and their MP is fast paced so it fits in with short gaming sessions. It's like the angry birds of FPS

Exactamundo!

The problem is, as Saint_Dee says, those of you who are angered by the existence of CoD are angry for the wrong reasons. You are not their target audience. We might think it's crap and complain about it incessantly, but that's really only the same as a bunch of adults complaining because Teletubbies doesn't cater to adult audiences.

We are not the target audience. If you want a serious FPS, go play BF or ArmA. CoD is a casual game for casual gamers. If you're not a casual gamer, don't play it. It's really as easy as that.

CoD: Ghosts was a disaster because it tried to appeal to the whiners, meaning the people who are not CoD's target audience.

I can't wait for the day the overall gaming community will stop their incessant whining about CoD and realise that it's not representative of everything that's wrong with the industry. It's just a game aimed at a specific market segment and it does very well in that regard.

a game that made a billion Dollars in its first 24 hours shouldnt be called a disaster no matter how crap the gameplay is

Fair enough, but from a technical standpoint the PC version was pretty disastrous. They tried to appeal to PC enthusiasts with insane graphic settings and requirements and ended up basically ruining their game on PC, for the first few weeks at least.

They could just as well just have used the same engine from BLOPS2 and MW3 and it would likely have sold just as well. The CoD target audience doesn't really care about graphics and the like.

It's not that I hate the franchise or wish it weren't successful, I'm just annoyed at how it's success has affected the entire gaming market which led to a very boring generation compared to the PS1/PS2 era's. There were a lot more unique and innovative titles back then.
