Comic Books

So it seems that we're going to be having a Krypton series now... I'm not comfortable with this to be honest, especially if Gotham is anything to go by (yes, I'm not a fan of the missteps in Gotham). To be fair, Syfy is handling this, which could be a glimmer of hope since I kind of reckon there is an opportunity for some good world building and lore as opposed to the detective focus on Gotham (which isn't the problem I have with Gotham, the execution is to be honest). But yeah, those are quick thoughts on having Krypton's story told.

I saw that. Comic books seem to be a cash cow for TV shows these days. They always differ from the source material (which isn't always a bad thing), so people have misconceptions about the actual characters.

I haven't watched Flash, Gotham or Constantine yet (haven't gotten around to it yet), only the first season of Arrow. I can only hope that they don't screw it up. Also, there's a Supergirl show in the works.

Flash is actually good I'll admit and they've kind of got Barry Allen/The Flash character down pretty well, and in the grand scheme of things it does occupy the same universe as Arrow (and it's been mentioned that Supergirl will be the same). So I kind of like DC's idea of building a TV universe around these shows that is not in the same vein as their cinematic counterparts; it's a nice contrast to what Marvel has already established with their cinematic universe being complemented by their TV showings (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in particular). Gotham had the potential for greatness, but the missed opportunities and general story and character direction misses the mark for me.

I'm kind of excited for Supergirl because it'll join the DC TV universe (and if the recent Flash and Arrow crossovers are anything to go by, Supergirl in the mix could be fun), but I'm not yet convinced about Krypton (sceptical Dee is sceptical), it could work but I'm not making any bets.

IMHO DC made an error by splitting up the cinematic universe from the TV universe, as they will contain the same characters. You'll have two versions of the same character. That fits the parallel universe-bill from comic books, but they could be doing so much more. That's another show I haven't watched: Agents of SHIELD.

Initially, those were my thoughts, but as I thought about it I realized that it would be beyond ambitious to try and maintain a TV and Cinematic universe as one continuity, or at least in the case of the DC properties.

For one I would worry about the barrier of entry for viewers. Look at Marvel's cinematic stuff, a great catalogue and Agents of SHIELD (I've yet to watch it myself but I hear good things) adds on to that universe and for the most part Marvel has handled the continuous universe pretty well, but imagine if DC takes that approach considering the number of shows they have (Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, and goodness knows what else is in the pipelines... I don't know where Constantine stands, but Gotham is on the outskirts), the pressure for TV shows to keep in line with bigger picture of the DCCU would be heavy and might constrict some of the creativity of these shows, their take on the heroes and their villains, and the continuity could get convoluted. Also, I think from a viewer point of view, I think it's a nice contrast to see how the shows give us their detailed perspective on the characters vs the movies which are trying to tell tighter, more controlled stories. And as you mentioned, there is multiverse idea around the DC stuff although I doubt they'll capitalize on that since using the multiverse is a bit too ambitious... as far I can tell. It would be great though.

I do get what you're saying. I do think making it one universe would have probably worked better if they chose other stories for the TV Shows the way that Agents of Shield doesn't focus on the heroes from the movies. That way, we would still get unique stories while having them linked to the movies. But then again, Marvel's name garners more trust than DC, which means everything that DC does is riskier in terms of movies or shows, and making +10 movies along +3 TV Shows (TV shows that hope for longevity) that are meant to be in the same universe (which probably means choosing other stories for their TV shows which could be hit or miss). It sounds way to o risky a move for DC.

Shit. Never replied to Dee's post.
DC have some issues, but we shouldn't forget that they have the longest running comic book related TV show ever to have been broadcast.

With Arrow, they are introducing more and more fringe characters of the Justice League which I feel is a wasted opportunity to build a truly groundbreaking universe. I wouldn't watch a Firestorm movie (ok, I probably would), but I would totally watch a TV show featuring the guy. Then having him making an appearance in a Justice League movie creates a gateway for leaving character introductions to TV shows and more Ass-whooping on the silver screen.

Anyway... On an unrelated note, Doom Patrol is breaking my brain.

Holy crap, I just topped the non-reply record :p!

I totally get what you're saying; done right, a unified TV and Movie universe would be amazeballs, but I just worry about convolution.

Also, I've been reading some Marvel stuff since I last mentioned them last time, I've read some Iron Man*, Amazing Spider Man*, Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider Man. Goodness, I must admit I'm having a good time with Iron Man and everything Spidey. I'm also coming to realize how good Marvel is with events (Spider-Verse is f**king awesome:eek:!!!). At least that's the impression I'm getting from Spider-Verse. I'm really loving Spidey:D!!!

I need to get into the current Spider-Man stuff. I've heard good things about what Slott is doing with Webhead. I'm still doing the whole Doom Patrol thing. I have so many other stuff to get around to...

I also need to check out Doom Patrol. And I have a feeling you'll love Spider-Verse. I just realized my biggest problem with Forever Evil as I keep reading the Spider-Verse stuff; convolution is the name of the game with DC and its crossover events.

I just realized how much my geek culture paradigm has shifted in the past 2 - 3 years. Initially, the only comics I'd ever read were a few of issues of Supes, and some Bats (this extends to other things like games, anime, etc). And now I'm gobbling up all sorts of things from games, comics, anime, to other geek-culture related media . I think the Mygaming community has really been a catalyst to my awakening. Not just a "filthy casual" anymore :D

Rick Remender did a great UNCANNY X-Force run. I can't remember the time line that well, so you might be reading a different run.

I have a similar story: I was heavily into all things Vertigo, Image and a few indie publishers. I had a grudge against DC for whatever reason. This thread led me to explore the DCU and I have ended up completely reversing my opinions on the DCU. They have such great writers who create excellent stories.

I'm busy reading Batman: Court of Owls. Loving it so far. Death of the family is next. I am considering getting that edition with the Joker mask :D

Do it. I checked that box set out the other day and the Joker mask is awesome. You get a mask set for every collection so far, the Owl mask was pretty cool.

Glad you're doing the Snyder/Capullo Batman run. Some good stuff there.

Pretty quiet in here. Time to change that.

Head over to Humble Bundle's site and pay $18 to receive a buttload of epic first volumes of Image Comics. Seriously, this is a really good deal. Wicked + Divine is on there, Manhattan Projects, and a lot more.

Also, the $18 also gets you issues 1-42 of the Walking Dead (which should give you stuff to talk to Tom about) and issues 1-18 of Saga (which will give you the most mind-blowing comics experience of your lifetime).

all of these are DRM free and supports a good cause.

Wazzup guys/gals, haven't posted in here in ages. So I'm busy sorting out some of my stuff, and I've got loads of comics/trades/hardcovers/statues taking up space that I am looking to sell to someone a bit more serious about comic collecting. Mostly Marvel/DC stuff from about 2 years ago and back. For anyone interested, pop me a PM and I can send you a list or something.

Comics are sleeved and boarded, and was put away in comic boxes in a dry area, so should be as good as new. Some have not even been opened to read. Trades are mostly all in their plastic sleeves. Statues are either on display or in their boxes.

Small list stuff:

DC : Superman, Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, Justice Society, Green Lantern, Supergirl, 52, Adventure Comics etc.
Marvel : Spider-Man, Avengers, Thor, Captain America, Wolverine, X-Men etc.
Trades : Walking Dead, Marvel collections (Avengers, Iron Fist), DC Collections (Superman, Batman, JLA) and more.
Statues : Batman B&W (got a few), Batman & Superman statue set from Public Enemies, Sue Storm Bust and a few others.

Edit : or if you are looking for a specific title or issue you missed, maybe I got it for you.
