Comic Books

Wanted to ask about the Marvel Unlimited subscription...

It seems like a great deal at $99 per year, But then i assume you need to keep buying the annual subscription? and after 1 year you wont have access to any of the comics u previously read without renewing?

In all fairness most people probably wouldn't read the comics more than once...
personally I dont think its a good deal , which is why I do it adhoc I used to have many subscriptions , but I have dropped a lot
Now I just wait on a review and then dive in about 3 or 4 issues in .
otherwise you just end up reading crap cause you spent the cash .

@Avenged i'm downloading Comixology now to give it a try

Ja give it a shot and let me know.

For me ComiXology is the best app out there...

I hear what you saying about just reading crap because you paid for it, but Iv got alot of catching up to do... Especially with the X-Men, So it may be better for me at the moment...

I am also not really fond of the app that they display it in. They really could have made that better.

Marvel Unlimited is actually a great deal for someone who likes to read comics for their story and art, but do not want to collect all of them. at $69 you could probably buy only about 70 comics if you only buy them on 99c sales. if you are a collector, then 70, good quality comics in a year means you are doing pretty well.

the biggest appeal is for someone wanting to get into comics but have not really read too many comics before. for example, i can now read the entire Ultimate Spider-Man collection (which i never had the privilege to read before) without missing any issues. and when a spin-off is mentioned i can easily read one or two of those and continue.

i think once i have been subscribed for a year or maybe two, and i have caught up on all the better story-arcs etc, then an annual Unlimited sub will no longer make sense. but for now, it is an awesome way to get stuck in and read a lot of great comics on the cheap :)

EDIT: once i cancel my sub i will not stick with Marvel direct... their apps are not as good as Comixology. plus i can have all my collections from multiple publishers in one very well designed app.

Would also like to give this Comixology a try. What's the going price for digital comics?

Depends. Anything from 0.99$c-$3.99.

TOP TIP: If you have buy your comics through Comixology on iOS, your R/$ exchange rate is locked to R7.99/1USD. Which means that you save almost R2 per $. This comes in handy, especially when buying graphic novels.

Thanks a lot that will come in handy! Will give it a go tonight.

I have saved lots of money like that. For some reason, the exchange rate isn't live, like on Android or direct website CC purchase. So when you buy something through iTunes for $9.99, you save more than R20.

There are some setting that can be adjusted that might help you find the view that you want for your books in Comixology. One tip though, is to tick the 'Show entire page at end' box, which will show the entire page when it reaches the end of the page. This allows you to see everything that is going on in the page (for the art lovers) while still making use of the GuidedView technology.

This tip helps a lot. Still getting used to it and feels weird not paging. Prefer the real thing though, but I think it will just take me some time to get used to reading comics digitally. Now to decide if I should give in and subscribe to a title or ten...

Try it. Especially the digital-only stuff, like Bandette.

For first issues or so I won't mind getting something like that, but it's a bit pricey. Can get a couple of Flash CGC rated comics on another forum for not too bad a price, still contemplating it. Might get a few of my collectors issues CGC'd if I have the funds for it.

My question is based towards more if it's at all worth it in your mind to get your comics CGC'ed. I have quite a few rare comics but I don't think it justifies the CGC

Positives for it : Can only go up in value. Maybe not so much in the SA market. Comes in a nice frame as well and adds + 10 to geek factor.

Negatives : Costs a lot, the turn around time for it can be long, and you can't read it after it has been CGC'd.

For run of the mill issues I'd give it a skip, but for collectors stuff I'd consider it. Other comics that I like I would maybe rather frame for display purposes, thus also kinda preserving it. I got a few JLA issues with multiple covers by Alex Ross which I would like framed, but can't justify spending the money to CGC it.

Also, not quite sure, but would signed comics actually devalue your CGC score if you were to send that in?

I know that if the signature is personalised to you then it lowers the value however if it's just a normal signature it increases values. (That is if the CGC rating is at least higher than 7.6; lower than that and value drops anyway)

Yeah my thoughts exactly on the pros and cons. But maybe its just me; but I personally dont want to have comics that are just used as collectors pieces. But of the joy in having a rare comic is that you are among the few whom can read it at your leisure.

I do want one or two books CGC'd. I do know of many people, especially on the EOC forum, who don't like the idea of 'slabbing' your books. I can guarantee that after I CGC that book, I'd want to read it immediately.
