Core I7 Temperature Problems

Hi Guys,

I've been searching the net but I can really find an answer.

I am running a core i7 930 stock, and the idle temperature of the CPU is constant 50-55 degrees.
And when running battlefield 3 it spikes to 80 - 85 degrees.

This cant be right can it? It seems way too high!

So my question is, would a 3rd Party CPU cooler resolve this issue?
Or could it be that the processor or Mobo is on the way out?

My setup is as follows
CPU : Intel Core I7 930 2.80 ghz with stock cooling
Mobo : Asus Rampage III Formula
Case : Coolermaster HAF 922 with all fan mountings used
RAM : 3 x 2gb DDR3 1600
GPU : Radeon HD 6950 2gb

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated!

I don't think that's way too high, my i5 runs at ~40c idle, not sure what it peaks at though.

Aftermarket coolers could help quite a bit depending on what you get, but the stock one should be fine. Is it attached just with the stock thermal paste? Getting some more and applying it correctly could help. I'll refer you to the Arctic Silver 5 instructions for that (Google it).

I took of the heat sync and fan this past weekend, cleaned off the old thermal paste and re applied cooler master thermal paste.
Temp Range stayed the same.

Do you think Arctic Silver 5 would make a difference?

IF you put on too much thermal paste it coudl casue it to overheat aswell.

Also its well knows to let your rig run a week before you make any attempts at gauging the temps.

then stock is never good on a top end cpu.

So id suggest get yourself a V6GT or V8 ( i got a V8 and youd get 1 - 5 degrees cooler temps on a V8 ) its about R500 and ten you can clock your cpu to 4Ghz nd really really enjoy BF3

Hey,

I got a i7 920, which is clocked to 3.9Ghz (Stock is 2.66Ghz if i remember correctly)
I never had my stock fan on to begin with, so can't really say, but with a Zalman CNPS9900A LED, it reached 55 idle and then on load it topped 80...

So my next step was another cooler...

I bought Corsair H100 watercooling (look on page 4 on this review, they give the stock cpu temps aswell), and the temps I get now is 48-50 idle and 69-72 with 100% on all cores. I used Prime to test it. Overall I am quite happy, but the one thing which I do find a bit annoying is the fan noise from the 2 fans which sits on the radiator.

Anyway, what I am getting at is that a new fan is definitely going to help. Thermal paste do make a difference, but the big difference will be with new cooling. See Thermal Paste Roundup

Have a look at this fan as well Noctua NH-D14, it got quite a few good reviews...

Anyway, that was a mouthfull, but all in all, your answers is new cooling.

Could also be a motherboard issue...If possible pop the chip into a friend's x58 board and see what it does then.

If i cant manage to get one of my friends to let me tamper with their pc's does anyone know where i can have an I7 tested?
In the Gauteng region.

Matrix is not going to help, all their test equipment is entry line shite...and if they open a box apparently its sold!

I was thinking this would be the best bet!

Now to try and convince someone to let me do it!

I'd really say that another cooler would help. If you look at the previous post I did, with the H-100 and the temp difference between stock fan and aftermarket, it is +-17degrees.

Another thing is to google it. Then you will notice how many people got a i7 930 which is over-heating...and 75%'s solution was another cooler. Could be the motherboard but for me that is a long shot...

I've googled it broken dude...
The problem is most people with the overheating issues are OC'ing their machines.

Mine is running stock and its on fire!

Last night in a quick test, Battlefield 3 pushed the CPU to 99 degrees(Across all 4 cores), checked with CoreTemp

Ok, well let me know what the solution was...
Have a read here as well though... Another i7 930 Over-heating

its most likely your fault and not the chips.

your cooler is either not on properly or something.

Get a better cooler and you will see the results ..

Popping your chip into another board i like a last last last resort

Well the stock cooler is shit....so ive ordered a Corsair H60 to test with!

Hopefully that should sort it out.

Lol!

"Stock CPU Cooler - FAIL" :)

Even the box knows it!

Thanks for all the help Dizz!

+Rep for you!

Lol, "Even the box knows it" you say....hahaha had a good laugh after reading that.

Pleasure, let me know what the outcome is.

Try cleaning your CPU and a CPU heat sink with "Rubbing alcohol" 70+% recommended. Then apply a pea size amount of thermal paste on the CPU and firmly put the CPU heat sink back on.

If all fails get a new heat sink, I got a CPNx10 cooler idles "35+-c and load 50+-C". If you think it’s your PC is the problem you can send it to “prophecy” or “Ikonicit” to check it out, they mostly send it to their supplier to check it for you. The cost is R350. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks will keep it in mind!

Will let you guys know whats up after the H 60 is installed!

Got the same board as yours, so if you don't come right, feel free to come test at my place. 1 Hour drive for you though.
