CPU Cooling

I'm posting this at the risk of sounding noobish...

My CPU runs at between 55 and 65 degrees celsius while playing games. Would cooling my cpu to run at around 45 degrees without overclocking it make it run more efficiently (eg. bring down the CPU usage)?

Nope all it will do is increase your CPU's life slightly. 55-65c is not a bad temp for most newer CPU's so you shouldn't worry too much about it. CPU temps do not affect performance, only stability.

Well I'm now totally out of options here. The reason I was asking was because recently my CPU is taking a serious hit with WoW. My CPU usage ends up in the 90's when I play and this is causing low fps.

Not sure what to do to solve this. PC specs are as follows:
GPU - HD5850
PSU - Coolermaster 550W
CPU - AMD AM2 Dual core 5200
RAM - 4 gigs DDR800

Can't remem my mother board. Will post once I'm home.

Thats strange. WoW should hardly be taxing on that CPU. Is this a recent problem? Could be some application running in the background causing it.

yeah agree with Isengard on this one wow even runs fine on an amd 3800+
It can also be adware spyware thats causing the high cpu usage.

Start off from a clean windows install and test if you have the same issue
The specs you gave should be enough to run the title although the 5200 is getting a bit long in the tooth ;)
It doesn't sound like temperature related issues though, as with increased temp under laod you would see more lockups etc

You checked the heat on your GFX card though ?

I'm using win7 32bit and I've checked the resource manager to see exactly what's using the most CPU and WoW shows an average of 45% - 60% usage which seems insanely crazy. I've tried running WoW without any mods at all and the same thing happens. One other application that seems to be spiking in CPU usage is svchost.exe (netsrvc) which hits roughly 40% with each spike. The culprit in svchost seems to be IPHelper but I haven't found a solution to that because it's not a constant high usage of CPU like WoW is.

But...for some unknown reason WoW was running fine last night. Going to test again tonight and see how it goes. If it's running fine then I have no idea what the hell the problem was because I haven't changed anything on my system (haven't even done any windows updates).

As with my post above, it's WoW that has the constant high CPU usage. I've done a malware, antivirus and spyware scan. Nothing came up.

The heat on my GFX nevers goes higher than 48 degrees.

CPU performance degradation will only happen in the 80-90C range, the CPU will underclock and undervolt itself to prevent heat damage. In your case of 50-60C, your well within the safe zone.

Testing with a clean windows and WoW install would definitely help eliminate a bunch of problems, also try testing with some other games.
