Dark Souls

I'll probably go for PC as it's the most accessible for me. I could go for PS3 if necessary because that's the only console I own.

It is my first souls experience, yes.

Note: I use a controller on PC too for most games, especially those that were originally designed for console so the controls will not be a barrier on PC.

If you're going PC there are a view caveats if you get DS1. You will need a mod to get the game to run at 1080p, if you're using a Xbox controller there is a bug where there is a forward deadzone that will make you walk instead of run (really annoying new bug).

Honestly I'd play DS1 on PS3, it's a better PvE experience than DS2, but mechanically DS2 is better.

I can confirm this is a solid game. Though as the article depicts, it is not a true Souls game, in that Miyazaki was not actively involved in the direction of the game (and it shows, if you know the series). That being said, it's the most accessible of the franchise, allowing for new players to ease into it and come to terms with the mechanics. It's still a great game and I have spent close on 500 hours with my PS3 version. And with all the DLC now included (among other additions and changes) I think it's really worth the const vs content.

There may be a few characters and references to characters from Dark Souls that you may not quite understand, but it's fine as the current "story" kinda holds it's own. Though the story per se is more about lore, so be ready to read item descriptions, look at world details and character dialogue very carefully if you care at all to piece together and to make your own judgments in terms of what you believe to be the story. This is what I love about it, I can argue this because of that and your take on the same subject might differ.

This is not a game that will hold your hand, the general consensus is very vague. You will not see a giant exclamation mark pointing to where you need to go or what you have to do. This is the beauty of it. You could literally end up going into areas from the start that are best suited for a 50 level character, it can be done though. I could talk for hours on these games, but I think that should sum up what you want to know.

Thanks to both of you. I probably will go for DSII on PC with the DLC, unless I can find DSI on the cheap on PS3. Thanks for the advice :D

It's a tough game and the menus are clunky, but oh so rewarding. It's..... difficult!

I don't mind really.. loving it at the moment!
I'm always really picky about how my character looks so spent some time with that..
Finally went with a Southern looking Barbarian name Uncle Meat. :p

Surprised people still play this game.

Right.. with all the Hype you built up in me around DS i thought let me finally take a real stab at it.

I downloaded my Ds1 Prepare 2 die edition and patched it with the 1080P mod along with the steam beta access rather than the windows live virus.

Got into the game and chose a Knight as I thought it would be a decent first choice and off I went.

And now i move it all into this mode as I don't want to spoil anything for 1st timers

Spoiler: show
And off i went indeed, I spent a good while at that first chunky bastard of a boss before I realized you can just run past... moving along and killing him a while later I spent a good 3 hours failing at the ghosts before finding the curses and then using them all only to fail and after that i explored a bit more to find the graveyard/catacombs area to which I bashed my head against for the next couple of hours. EVENTUALLY found that stairway up to that undead burg place, From there i guess i made some decent progress, i killed the taures demon on the 3rd attempt with the use of fire bombs and evasive maneuvers. I found a note on the floor about the dragon's tail being his weak spot so i shot it till i got a Sword ( btw it still owned me many times with that fire ) With the sword though i managed to clear the cathedral pretty smoothly and went on to wipe 5 or so times on the gargoyles, I then went back to the catacombs and fell down but landed on a ledge which I could see an item below me to which i dropped onto and then ran through a doorway ( smoke ) into another weird boss called pinwheel i think.

I easily dispatched him on my 1st try and tbh i was relived as i had around 3k souls going in there but is he suppose to be easy ? i just kept hitting everything i could see and it was all over with only needing to Estus once. I got a mask from him that increases my HP so i went and tried the Gargoyle again, this time i was offered a rune on the floor that summoned the knight of sunlight and him and I owned that boss and i managed to ring the bell.

so now that i am there I am attempting to fight that dragon but his fire just owns me, can you just give me a hint on the direction to go as i cannot find where i can purchase more curses to go fight the banshee's/ghosts in that annoying as all hell area . please keep it as a light hint as i am trying to work out most of this by myself and enjoying being frustrated due to the massive feeling of success when i get it right.

and also I bought something called Soul arrow and attuned it to my spell slot ( so i push up on my xbox controller ) and it just stays grayed out, how do i use that item ?

There are so many items in my inventory that i have no clue about like some cracked red thing that lets me invade another world, whatever that means and a skull that attracts monsters but all those things i should work out i think.

I also dumped most of that heavy plate armour and I am using mostly chain mail with the mask of the mother and i run around with a shield + dragon sword for normal mobs and the gargoyles polearm for anything stabby stabby

so since i started this game on Thurs ( less than 7 hours played according to the save file ) have I done ok ? I would really like to find some sort of better armour as I feel I am super squishy at the moment

Glad to hear you're enjoying it bud. And nice to see you've taken the plunge especially at this late in the games life. Easily my favourite Souls game of the series. You've made some surprising progress for a "casul" :p

Spoiler: show

I would like to know how you found out how to get the Drake Sword from shooting off the Wyvern's tail (not a dragon technically).

this time i was offered a rune on the floor that summoned the knight of sunlight and him and I owned that boss and i managed to ring the bell.
That's actually a summon sign. If you're playing online you might see a few of em. So now you need to ring the second bell, down in Blighttown.

so now that i am there I am attempting to fight that dragon but his fire just owns me, can you just give me a hint on the direction to go
You have a few choices. I would just ignore the Wyvern on the bridge. You could go down in Lower Undead Burg towards the depths and take on Capra and his hounds and then Gaping Dragon.
Also then make your way towards Blighttown to take on Kellogs. There's two ways to get into Blighttown from either the Depths or from Drake Valley.

and also I bought something called Soul arrow and attuned it to my spell slot ( so i push up on my xbox controller ) and it just stays grayed out, how do i use that item ?
You gonna need a Talisman for miracles and a Catalyst for sorceries.

Cracked Red Eye Orb will be used for invading other players worlds. And the skulls would only work on certain enemy types

I think you've made fantastic progress. You'll need to play and learn what kinda builds work for you, I personally never play any sorcery based classes and despise magic. I think stay away from the Anor Londo Ruins for now and Catacombs, I don't think you'll be ready for that.

Hope this helps and doesn't spoil too much.
Shout if assistance is needed and shall be granted.

You are grossly incandescent!

Everyday im sad that i sold my ps3 and dark souls. Im thinking of partioning my mac tomorrow to install windows so that i can download it again. And then next month its DS2 on the xbox.

Praise the sun. And fuck the capra demon.

I think I have been more lucky with some parts like that pinwheel fight and finding the sword which helped immensely, as even finding that area was luck as I cannot progress down there because the skeletons keep coming back even after I kill them, just killing the necromancer before getting the bonfire took me forever

Spoiler: show

I would like to know how you found out how to get the Drake Sword from shooting off the Wyvern's tail (not a dragon technically).

Well it started me shooting it on the bridge a few times and it flew down then I ran and hit its foot to which I ended up dying to fire, when I found the way under the bridge someone left a note on the ground saying his tail is his weakness so I finally stumbled upon the merchant ( completely by accident as I was dodging some mobs and fell onto a stairway that was hidden by box's ) and got a bow with arrows then just stood there shooting it and when he flew up I tried shoot at him from the underside of the bridge then just shot the tail again. it felt like as long as you don't die you can spend hours on a boss they don't really reset and I believed this was a boss with no health or boss car just kept at it, then the tail fell off and I got a sword to which i ran upstairs and got gibbed by fire instantly again

But the knight was a npc right? Why did it only offer it to me the 4th or 5th attempt, was it because I tried it as a human and reversed hollowing ?
To summon actual people? or are they npc’s ?
So you invade them to kill them? After the bell by the gargoyles I shat a small brick to that weird ass guy with his arms open that sold me a piece of paper that if someone comes and kills me I use it so that they will be judged, does that mean I can go and either help people or kill them in other worlds ?

Well last night I explored a bit more, firstly I tried the dragon before you replied and died a few times then went back to the knight of sunshine to which he added nothing but when I went back up the stairs there was a locked door on the right which ends up back at firelink or goes to this Capra guy..

And what an asshole.. I traversed the light to have him pinning me against the wall and owning me and the 2nd and third I managed to get to those stairs and kill the dogs only to still suck hard at dodging..
So anyway I am on this guy and will update you when I manage the kill (don’t want spoilers on this )

So the soul arrow is a miracle? so I equip it in my right hand then push up ? thanks for the help on this

What is the Anor Londo ruins? Sorry I am not good with names yet, will that be the place with those ghosts that either pull you to them or just abuse you with their blades?
And I agree 100% that catacombs is not the place for me, I was lucky enough to get pinwheel but I cannot progress down there the fact I got anything was a mistake as I technically just fell to loot :P
I may need to use that item that stops skeletons from growing back but I don’t have a steady income of souls or a decent farming place for 1000 souls to be wasted ( I think that Is what that weirdo was selling it for )

I am level 24 or 25 now though :D but it seems as you level everything else gets harder also hahaha

Yeah man I am so happy I took the time and started this, with the mod for gfx and with the xbox controller It has been such and amazing experience, I have been so frustrated and so rewarded all at the same time its great.

worst issue for me is using things i should not to early or not knowing what something does but I told myself I want to appreciate it like someone who is playing for the first time and it is really working out well so far.

at least i can shout for some advice here and BeoTek is helping out like a Baoss without really spoiling anything :D

From software should give beotek a lifetime award for converting people.

I remember the start of the journey. Its rough. But awesome. My wife could never understand why i would torture myself like that. They will never understand.

Haha My GF was laughing at me as I was in my study with her daughter watching me from the beginning and getting so frustrated with trying to kill that pyromaniac piece of doodoo in the catacombs before i realized i should not even be there yet then stumbling upon the stairs that took me to the undead burg was the most liberating feeling ever, it felt like i had won the game even though i had not fought a real boss yet as all i had done is run in a circle and die for the first 3 odd hours of the game and i can finally kill something other than those silly zombies that I was grinding as i thought my level was a little low hahahaha Good Times man . I think i was passed level 7 or 9 before i even stepped into the undead burg tbh just because i believed what i was trying to do was correct

And for sure, I owe BeoTek a beer for this one and will sort something out soon i am sure

You also want to progress down, get to blacksmith Andre and go past the Titanite Demon into Darkroot Gardens and Darkroot Basin. You'll need to put in some grinding there too, and if you're playing online be sure to watch out for invasions and ganks down there. Very popular area for that. You'll also come across the Moonlight Butterfly.

Some NPC's give the ability to summon them as well as other players. That is what those hieroglyphics are. And you'll need to be human in order to see them. The game doesn't do a good job at explaining that. But at least this game doesn't decrease your health every time you die, or make the environment more challenging for every death :p
