Diablo III review (MyGaming)

Hello James

I have seen that Diablo 3 has been receiving stellar reviews around the world and a quick glance at the (reviewer) ratings at Metacritic will confirm this. However, what Nic said in his review echoes my sentiments about the game: although the forced online play does not destroy the game, it impacts heavily on our experience here in SA and the shortness of the game with the expectation that we replay it, really is just a bit of a cop-out. Story is important for me in a game and to only have a level 32 character after thoroughly scouring the maps makes me feel a bit cheated.

In summary, I agree with what Nic said in his review whole-heartedly and the score of between a 7 and an 8 out of 10 was what I gave I it when my friends asked me to rate it, much for the same reasons that Nic cited. Great review.

Stagger

EDIT: I realised that the review was written by Nic and not James, I just edited the post accordingly.

Longevity of 6. I'm 53 hours in. I see though that The Walking Dead Episode One has a longevity of 7 and Max Payne 3 has 8. I must get about a 100 hours in one of those games!

I feel that you rushed the game in normal difficulty Tinman. I'm now in act 4 of Nightmare. 53 hours in. Yes, the game isn't perfect but these days you get about 10 hours gameplay time on a game and Diablo III offers so much that I can see myself playing it for a long time to come.

Some of it on my own. Some of it in a party. Will definitely need a hardcore character.

And knowing Blizzard they will fix the problems. What people don't remember is how bad a game Diablo II was until Lord of Destruction came out. Diablo III is already a good game and it will only get better.

Is Diablo III a worse game than The Walking Dead: Episode One? No it isn't. And that just shows how subjective these scores are and why I prefer reviews by sites like Rock Paper Shotgun. They tell you what they think of the game and leave out the scores. Because if you read Tinman's review it sounds like he enjoys the game a lot and yet the scores don't match. Most people will just see the scores however and yet they don't make sense.

Eh, my little rant. Diablo III is a good game. It will bring you a lot of happy gaming hours. Of course, this is my opinion just like Tinman's review was his. 2 months from now I still see myself playing Diablo III. Do I still see myself playing Max Payne 3 or The Walking Dead: Episode One? No. So seriously... the scores for MyGaming is wrong.

I love the game as well, but have to disagree with the OP. I believe the review rating is spot on. Besides the fact that I'm enjoying it, there are many glaring issues that can't be ignored.

My opinion:

Review scores: Totally pointless. I've suggested last year that Mygaming should replace it with 5 words: Shitty, below average, average, decent & great!! or something similar.

Longevity: I'm also about 50 hours in on Nightmare now. Took me and a couple of buddies almost 25 hours to complete normal and then there is still incentive to play on the higher difficultly levels for better items or play with other classes. I get more game time out of Diablo 3 than about 90% of my other games.

Difficulty: I must probably suck then. Our co-op party felt like gods on normal mode, slaying everything in our path, but we're dying quite a lot on nightmare so far. Even a small magical frog like enemy in one cave felt strong than Diablo was in normal.

Connection: Only on launch day evening, but what online game doesn't have issues on launch day. I played about 12 hours on launch from 8am in the morning. The evening the servers died, but I haven't had issues since. It's 2012 and almost every game being released will require you to be online.

I think the game is great and it is in fact the perfect successor to Diablo 2.

I like how all of you say "I'm about 50+ hours in on Nightmare".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't playing in Nightmare require you to play through the game once? Which means, you effectively need to replay the game to actually have fun, since Normal seems to be ridiculously easy.

I've only played on the guest-pass - so I can't comment on what comes later, but having to replay a game to have fun seems to be a little bit of a cop-out. And far from getting me anywhere closer to actually buying Diablo III, the 3 hours or so I spent playing actually convinced me to go and reinstall Diablo II.

I have been one of the harshest critics of this game, saying it's a reskinned version of Diablo 2. I started playing it, and must say I got hooked rather quick! I am often seeing myself play hours without realising how much time has passed.

Oh yeah, people complaining about the review, this is Nic's finding of the game, and not the opinion of everyone on this forum and reading the site. I would rate it differently, and so would every other person who plays it. For this reason, Nic's review is good, and if it don't match your feelings, then write your own review :)

Hmmm I must be playing very slowly because I haven't finished act 2 yet, with already 15 hours on the clock.

I agree with the rating that MyGaming gave D3. I would also rate it between a 7 and an 8. If it did not have the always-online requirement it would be a 9 or a 10.

There are several aspects about the game that aren't properly polished like we expect from a Blizzard game:
1) AH is not accessible in character and you need to log out. Not a train smash normally, but if you are playing co-op and you want to check the AH quick you lose the map that you were busy exploring with your buddies. Also if you try to auction something which is damaged you need to log back in game, run to the merchant, repair it, log out, and sell it on AH. Very tedious... AH is well suited for buyers, but is terrible for sellers. It is extremely difficult to gauge a fair price for the item that you are trying to sell.
2) It has become the norm to allow your to change your characters physical traits upon creation. D3 only allows male or female and they all look the same.
3) Gems are classes as white loot and you will quickly learn to ignore white loot. Would have been nice if it was a different colour or if you could pick it up automatically like you do gold.
4) Default gold pickup radius is just a little bit shorted than I would have preferred it. With our latency it's quite common that you run over it and then have to circle back to pick it up because it wasn't picked up the first time.
5) The item hitboxes are tiny and you basically have to click on the text. If you are playing at max resolution it can be quite easy to misclick an item and having to click on it multiple times to pick it up.
6) There is really no excuse for any spikes or rubber-banding when playing single-player.
7) Piracy is Blizzard's problem, they introduced DRM which made it our problem.

Other than those issues D3 is a great game and it is very enjoyable playing it with your friends. I just can't help but think it could have been so much better.

Level 28, about 12 hours in at the moment, and close to the end of Act 3. Played lots of co-op, but can't recall having ever lost any progress or any maps. We have also explored every nook and cranny and frequently ran back to explore that little part you left behind only to find nothing there.

Pfft you obviously did not read my whole post. I said that in my post. And I wasn't complaining about the review but rather the scores. I like his reviews.

Especially the longevity of the game is much better than said. I compared it to The Walking Dead. For example:

vs

In fact, it looks more like it's the Walking Dead which has the wrong scores. :)

Wasn't referring to you bro, but to every review I read online.... Check any D3 review, and the comments are that "this review sucks because I do not personally agree with it".

Fair enough. :) Sorry, I woke up grumpy today hehe.

Personally I think the skill system is tons better in Diablo 3. In fact, there have been many times where I change a skill and it pwns even more than the one I had just been using for the last 10 levels. While I do believe that there is an optimum build out there, you are not pigeon holed in to it at all. Lets be honest here, one of the worst parts of Diablo 2 was the points / skill allocation system. You would actually just copy down the best build from online anyways, seeing as it was permanent. Now you actually get to experience your class without having to replay the entire game again just to try something different.

The only 2 irritations, like many others, is of course the latency issue which is down to Blizzard's servers being hammered and the shortness of the game. Problem is, I don't see much room for expansions / DLC happening!

actually i see lots of room for expansions/DLCs ... what happened to Leah, each follower still has their story lingering in the air, also what that guy says about the thief guild getting pay back in act 1.

well back to the review, i kinda disagree with the review ... diablo has always been one of those game where you want to play the more difficult levels, normal difficulty is just a tutorial for the character selected.

A single run through will take you between 10 and 15 hours, and I rarely struggled with the difficulty level. After completing the game on the Normal difficulty setting in just a few days, I was invited to play it on Nightmare mode. Don’t be fooled by the name though – Nightmare mode is no more difficult that your first play through, it just has higher level enemies, which after completing the game once, your character will be able to defeat quite easily.

i find the paragraph a load of BS sorry to say, you try running through nightmare with a character that just took 10-15 hours in normal without nice gear then keep track of how many times you died ... im sure you will retrack you statement of "your character will be able to defeat quite easily"

here is some stats on the fallen, that small thing with an axe and shield that's always in a group:
normal - hp=33-66, min damage per hit=38
nightmare - hp=614-1229, min damage per hit=388
hell - hp=3762-7524, min damage per hit=2523

and i wont post inferno cause that is just scary for a small creep like that ...

diablo should be reviewed as a game that needs to be played on higher difficulty levels and not like other games where a person just plays it on normal, then you might as well just stuck to the guest pass

the storyline probably also needs a higher rating considering how they put the lore for nearly each monster in the game

The story is crappy and predictable and only serves to give you a minor excuse for all the monster slaying. Playing nightmare is actually more fun now that we don't need to get bogged down by the lame ass excuse of a story.

The CGI cutscenes are awesome though. :)

This game is mostly about the grinding. Now I hate grinding, but because the game is fun and I'm playing with friends it's actually worth going through the other difficulties. We're nearly done with nightmare.
