if you were faced with the choice of playing 2 equally good games, with the only notable diference being the length of playtime, which would you choose ?

essentially, i'm trying to figure out if i'm the only one who prefers games that are sub 6 hours. I tend to get bored and tired after 6 or 10 hours. and not to mention, the insane backlog means that i start to feel pressure to move onto something else.

Back when I was a young man, ever so long ago, i used to love playing games for 50 hours plus. I must have sunk 100 hours EACH into KOTOR and Baldurs Gate. but those days are gone. Some of my favourite gaming memories of recent times have been games like "Brothers" and "Gone Home". stuff that took 2-3 hours and was awesome.

It'll depends on the depth of the game I think.

A game (or DLC) like TLoU: Left Behind only took me like 3 hours to complete. But I wouldn't have wanted it to be longer. It was perfect. But the story was rich and engrossing.
Then you get games like Waves or Geometry Wars which are great for short bursts of time, but overall you put in hours (and hours) of game play. They have story but keep you coming back cos it's the type of title that I use as a time waster, or something to fill a gap.
Then there are the titles like Skyrim, GTA, DA:I, and the more recent Elite Dangerous which is all soaking up hours because of content. Not because of story, just based on the shear amount of things to do. This type of sandbox game which has no directive and only what you make of it.

I prefer shorter games mostly since long usually means its stretched out thin.

exactly! i can quickly tell when a game is just stalling for time. as much as I loved Far Cry 4, towards the end I began to get a little tired and started to just rush to finish the game. only did a tiny fraction of the huge number of filler tasks

i love me some sandbox and rpg gaming. those games i tend to have a much much higher tolerance for gametime. but after about 10-12 hours, i was starting to tire of Far Cry 4. even though i loved it, i wanted to wrap it up. Same story Shadow of Modor, which i also thoroughly enjoyed.

Personally, i felt that TLoU dragged on about 2 hours too long.

There should be a poll option for both :)

It depends on the type of game really. I'm not expecting to and neither do I want to only spend 6 hours in a game like GTA. The same goes for most indie games, I am expecting it to last only 4 -6 hours (generalizing of course).

Looking at what I am currently playing and what I played recently, I lean towards playing longer games (BF4, DA:I, Diablo3, World of Tanks). Some take long to finish once, others you just keep going back to for more since you can't really "finish" the game.
I like playing a short game every now and then, but overall I prefer longer games, even though I don't have all that much time to game.

Off Topic: someone might misconstrue this topic for something else :3

I like both long and short games. I try to play one long game then a short one or two and then a long game again. I love RPGs and they must be long in my opinion.

No pref, as long as it keeps me entertained without it feeling like a chore. Hate the grind and repeat but can play games for hours as long as its fun, and that is the key, not the time.

i intentionally kept the choices bi-poll-ar (hyuk hyuk) in order to avoid fence sitting. scenario to consider is that if you, right now had a choice to play 2 equally stellar games, would you choose the 20+ hour title or the 4 hour game.

I almost always prefer shorter games, but I do occasionally find something that I can play for hundreds of hours.

I would definitely pick the 20+ hour title. :)

As long as possible, length does matter afterall, yes?

I am always left dissapointed after finishing a 5 - 7 hour game. So do prefer the 12h+ titles

In all likely hood I'd pick the 20+ hour title.

I prefer long games. I hate waiting years for a title I'm hyped for to have it be over in a day or two. Obviously it shouldn't just be boring filler material but I much prefer a game that lasts 10+ hours. I'm always sad when a great game ends.

Define long is it over 50 hours shorter than 50 hours?
Well since we have a choice I would go for the 21 hour mark those are just long enough it seems.

I hate games that I can finish in 4 hours if its AAA games.

Length definitely matters (in before the 'that's what she said' comment).

I'd much rather play a game I can really sink my teeth into, than play a game that's done after 4-6 hours. Games that short leave me feeling cheated and empty.

damn, i'm certainly in the minority :( i love it when i can clock a game in under 6 hours. it means i get to experience MORE games.
