EA Confirms Dragon Age 2

Reveal coming tomorrow?

July 7, 2010

by Jim Reilly
Electronic Arts has confirmed BioWare is developing Dragon Age 2, a full, complete sequel to the new fantasy RPG franchise first released in 2009. The full reveal of the game could come as early as tomorrow.

First spotted by Kotaku, the confirmation came hidden away in a separate press release this morning from the publisher announcing it had picked up the European publishing rights for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

The release notes that BioWare is currently developing "Dragon Age 2, the highly anticipated sequel to 2009's "RPG of the Year" Dragon Age: Origins."

To make things even more intriguing, BioWare teased over Twitter today that fans of the studio would be very happy tomorrow. Is the game getting a full reveal then?

Electronic Arts confirmed early this year that a new Dragon Age game was in development, but it was unclear at the time if this would be an expansion or spin-off title, or a completely new sequel.

In March, a card packed inside each copy of the new expansion Dragon Age: Origins -- Awakening was discovered that hinted at a release for the game, February 1, 2011.

I don't like that in the sequel you can only play a human. I presume this was done in order to allow a fully voiced pc.

That kinda takes the whole point of a rpg out:-/

Not really it just limits it. Lots of great rpg's like witcher, gothic series, ect was limited to one race. Its just silly to do it in the middle of a franchise.

That is true. I guess I am just a old school dnd nerd:eek:

I found Dragons age very easy:-/ I finished it on the hardest difficulty.

Thats not the issue.

I once uninstalled steam by mistake and just haven't got around to re-downloading Dragon Age.

Wait for the announcement that they are going to dumb down the combat.

I can see why they are doing it. The character Shepard from Mass Effect 2 was so much more relate-able because he/she was fully voiced. It also allows them to build a deeper back story for the character if they don't have several possible origins that they need to worry about.

Don't agree with that. a Predefined chracter like shephard/geralt forces you to play a certain way in order to get into character while a non voiced character like the dao origins pc allows more room for role playing.

I also don't agree that shephard back story was deeper than any of the origins stories.

I don't like opitions being cut mid franchise . I understand why they are doing it but I don't agree with it.

I don't know about this one yet, Dragon Age was good and everything, but Demon's Souls is WAY better IMO. Also, Awakenings bored of me after about 2 - 4 hours of play, for some reason my character was impervious to enemy attacks  I never took any damage while my companions dropped dead in seconds.

I enjoyed Origins (and most of the other Bioware games) so I probably will get Dragon Age 2 eventually (after I finish The Witcher 2 a couple of times :p).

Fair enough, it's your point of view after all, but I personally found myself enjoying the ME2 story far more than the DAO one.

I am not debatting the story being more enjoyable since that's down to personal preference.

But if we compare what we actually know of where shephard comes from compared to what we know of the background of the dao origin wardens, there a lot more back ground in dao. For instance you know next to nothing of shephards family or where he comes from before joining the spectre's',ect while with dao you get an understanding of the different societies and the role players involved with them.

The ME 2 companions are deep and comparable to their dao counterparts but the me main character is not deep imho.

Dragon Age 2 isn't pulling just one page from Mass Effect's book. It's pulling several, including the ones titled "conversation systems" and "save game continuity".
Information from the latest issue of Game Informer has begin appearing online, and mentions that Dragon Age 2 is doing away with the classic "tree" dialogue system, where you're presented with lines of text that you select, and replacing it with Mass Effect's "wheel", which uses intent as a means of generating almost "real-time" conversations. There's a slight change, though; rather than basing your answers on their position on the wheel, the "hub" will now clearly indicate what tone your response will be; anger, flirting, etc.
You'll also be able to carry over your save game from the first title, the events you forged in Dragon Age determining how things turn our in the sequel. Sounds strange, but Dragon Age 2 begins while the final events of the first game are coming to a close, so there's cross-over there.
Another change - and this might be the biggest - is that only the PC version will retain Origins' "strategic combat". The console versions will feature a new combat system, one BioWare says plays to the strength of the control pad. "Rather than try to mimic the PC experience on consoles", the GI report states, "Dragon Age II has a battle system more tailored to the strengths of the PS3 and 360."
Sounds like your Dragon Age combat just got Oblivioned.
As one of those bastards that prefers Mass Effect's more "contemporary" take on the RPG to Dragon Age: Origins' more "classic" approach, I'm digging these changes, as in many places Dragon Age felt like playing a game from, well, 2003. That said, those left upset by the move, I will understand, and provide tissues and hugs if need be. Change can be tough when you liked the thing it used to be.
