DStv vs gaming: which is cheaper?

Well with the new price hike i think gaming is going to be cheaper my wife already started with the "lets cancel dstv and you can upgrade your line rants"

But i love my sport so much in hd i didn't spend 10K on a tv for nothing

What a load of Bull!!

What is excluded in the price calculations is bundle's like Humble, BundleStars, Indiegala not to even mention Steam sales where you can pick up loads of games for way less. In fact I never spend more than R100 a month on games and I have so many titles in my backlog that I am still on 2010-2011 games.

Next up is Free 2 play games like Path of Exile, Team Fortress 2, Dota, Planetside, Loadout and loads more where you can play for hours without even paying a cent.

Next up Console subs like PS+ where you get at least 2 games free a month, Hell I have so many games that the PS3 is in my sons room as I dont even get time for for them. Oh and even on PS there are free to play games like Dust 514.

I can go on and on about all the games out there that comes out way less than quoted 2 x R400+ p/m its not even funny.

Edit: I think all of this is just DSTV worried about more people canceling MonoChoice in light of the new price hikes. I mean they even attacking Netflix on Mybroadband

Relax your buns, AJ. I think Kevin is spoofing the DSTV vs ADSL debate over on MyBB. At least I hope that is what he's doing. Excellent piece of satire, whether intentional or not.

At least with gaming you get to choose what you want to consume. With DSTV you pay a fortune every month, just so you can have nothing to watch anyway.

This.

The only reasons why I still have DSTV is for the sport. Those bastards are clever, only offering Super Sport to premium subs >.>

Not true. You just flip through the channels until you find the specific program you want to watch. It's like video on demand implemented through the sheer volume of repeats.

I spend around 100 hours a month playing Dota ( a F2P Game) I spend maybe 20 hours watching TV...LOL
DSTV is and always has been a gigantic rip off much like everything in SA. Also as mentioned earlier, there are tons of sales on Steam, Gog, Humble bundle on a monthly basis. Then there also the F2P games, specifically Loadout and Dota 2 which are both utterly brilliant and time sinks.

The only thing DSTV has that I enjoy is sport and even my interest in that is swaying.

Short term solutions implemented by short-sighted management.
What do we want?
Profits.
When do we want it?
Now.

They are pissing off their subscribers by squeezing them for every penny. Charge them an arm-and-a-leg to watch sports and Afrikaans content because they won't find it anywhere else. They forget that things always change. So when (not if) somebody else wins the television rights for the sport, will their subscribers stay with the company that screwed them over all those years or drop their subscription like a puppy with diarrhea?

I'm no statistics expert, but I'm 90% sure that is not a valid comparison.

Wouldn't comparing subscription-based games (ESO, WoW etc.) to a subscription based thing such as Dstv be more valid?
Meaning that you pay regardless if you play/watch or not.

Onwards, to logic:
That average R429 price is once-off.
Some games only has 8 hours worth of game play. Which according to the "core-gamer" hour-per-week, won't even make it past a week. Hmm.. Maybe that's why people on average have to get two games per month :p
In that case, is post-game finger waddling for the remaining 3 weeks of the month is counted towards the gaming time?
Because according to stats, R429 for 8 hours must provide theme-park like experience!

I was also going to mention this... The game once paid for can be played repeatedly for as long as it takes for you to get bored... And also the prices were all on New games... What about trade ins? Swapping games with friends etc?

Swapping games with friends is illegal and promotes A Culture of Fraud and Corruptionâ„¢

I don't understand the need to round up game purchases per month to calculate the average cost spent per month on games. What was it rounded up from?

When you pay for a game, you at least have a choice of what content you are going to play. With DSTV, it is a lucky draw filled with repeats and Africa Magic.

Indeed, Have not watched tv in over 3 months wanted to watch something the other day and it was a repeat of something I saw 3 months ago. Also how do you like the naming of the Africa channels like HOUSE.

heh. "Multi"choice. I haven't watched TV in years and I don't miss it at all. The internet and my games are more than enough to keep me busy, just look at my games library. "whistling:
