EA announces new digital platform: Origin

I wonder how their region specifics is going to work.

:e
...as well as the pricing as a quick check shows I can get deadspace 2 for about R136 from an international EDM code provider VS local of R239. There's the thought of R400-ish for DA1 goty vs what I paid for it via take2's importing.

I wonder if this will effect the EA games on Steam.

I can't see them keeping their titles on steam. Surely they would risk getting undercut?
Is there any kind of DRM on the Origin titles?

What is clear is that Origin will be a great platform for EA games. However, if EA wants to take on the monster that is Steam, they will have to provide a similar offering for games from other publishers - something which they are not looking to do at this point.*

They would need to price really competitively.
They would also need some kind of in game achievement system.
Steam also has local mirrors with freezone, which is a big plus for me.

I'm hoping really hard they're not going to force this on me with BF3...
There's already way too many platforms I need to have running, updated, etc - just to play games.

Am I the only person that can't get onto their site?

Yes you have been earmarked as a steam special agent.

They've already forced us pc gamers to get DA1 Goty via import or use EDM. Surprise levels would not be so high.

lol. yeah its timing out on those links above and if I go directly from the article it says check back at 9AM PST.

Edit:

Still could not log in this morning. Disconnected from my TelkomInternet (SAIX) International | TelkomInternet (SAIX) Local RouteSentry split and went onto just one account: AfriHost International (IS) and it worked.

Seems there must be a segment of that site hosted locally on a site that TelkomInternet Local cannot access.

I also notice this site has the fpb logo all over it. A plus versus Steam that may become "illegal" :)

this "brand new service" is simply the EA Download Manager rebranded... I have been using it for a while. every time i buy an EA title i register my serial number on the app and its forever tied to my EA ID. lose the discs or the code and you can still download it again with no new purchase required :)

saying that i am not crazy enough to purchase anything from them directly... those prices are unrealistic!

It all comes down to rands and cents with these guys. Steam seems to be making tons of money and EA is planning on getting a piece of that. Oh well, what can you do? They keep making stuff and we will always play it...

EA is simply going to put ridiculous prices on everything. Proof? Looka t what EA games sell for on Steam. Sims 3 still $40? Fucking ridiculous.

I like the digital platform idea. It has always been a good idea (myself, I prefer a hard copy that I can hold in my hands) and Steam capitalized on that. As far as I am concerned, they kind of pioneered it for PC gaming. It was bound to happen that their competitors would follow the same route.

Not everything relating to this is a bad thing though...the more companies that follow this methodology, the more they will have competition and the more interesting prices and specials will get.

But that's the problem, though. I already use and love Steam, I don't want to have to use another digital platform.

i wonder if EA is planning to abandon steam. otherwise unless they offer some really good prices their service is going too be useless.

They will lose a LOT of moolah if they abandon Steam.
Then again, considering the people we're talking about... wouldn't really surprise me. They've made some pretty harsh decisions in the past...
