EA introduces "Online Pass"

The title only has value because people want it. If is a sought after title its their right to charge/do what ever they want with it. Its the consumers wanting of a specific feature that gives them the right to find a way to make money out of it.

Passion doesn't put food in you stomach, put you kids through college or pay for you new car. If its a worth while product I'll pay them what they ask, i wont pay them if the product is not worth while for me.

That may be so. But with out passion there products will lack quality. The IW thing how ever had nothing to do with the development with the game and the developers were passionate about there game.

Nobody ever said they dont have passion for what they make, my argument has always been why can't they have passion and want to make money. Why does it have to be one or the other?

I say it again. Gamings current popularity is not going to last forever. The market is going to move on pretty soon. And this sorta crap is just going to drag them down and well see games being made because they want to make them, not because they want money.

I disagree with the Highlighted statement. I have never bought a game pre-owned and then gone out and bought a new one and I've bought ALOT of games.
The Highlighted statement was reference to a player who bought a 2nd hand game then went on to buy a different title from the same developer ,ie advertising there brand and showcasing there product ..the logic is if i buy a 2nd hand game(BC1 ,so on so on) and most of them are from a particular developer then when I am able to buy an original and the developer has a title (BC2) of the same competing genre along with another developers title (MW2) chances are that BC2 would win 8 out of 10 times because the player has a trust relationship with the developer which was built from Purchases made before.

I didn't mean purchase the same game again ...But to be honest I did do exactly that with a few games.

If its less popular there will be less demand for it an publishers/developers will charge less. These titles only have value because we want them. Look at titles like Ironman the game, its worth next to nothing because nobody wants to play yet another grappy ass movie-tie in. Gears of War 2 on the other hand is still expensive almost 2 years after is release, why? Because there is still a demand for it.

People said the same things about movies 50 years ago and about TV 20 years ago. Fact is there will always be a market, if there is no market there will be no games.

Oh ok i misunderstood you there. Agree.

Of course there will be a market, but the current, popular market where all the money is coming from right now is not going to stay forever. Gaming is going to go back to what it was 15-20 years ago, made only by people who really want to make them, and played only by people who really want to play them.

So todays people dont really want to play games.... we just play them coz we are bored or something? Is that what ur saying?

Thats exactly what I'm saying, not you in particular, but a large portion of the current market, play whatever games they see is the shiniest and play it for one weekend, get bored and move on. There are also the ones who buy games who want to be seen with the hipster croud.

There are a few VGcats comics that sum this up pretty well.

I sense this is going back to the "Hardcore vs Causal" theme of a few weeks ago and to be honest i really dont care much for that attitude.

Doesn't change the fact that EA will be getting away with this "Online Pass" because of exactly that, this gonna be advertised as the best thing to ever happen since the last best thing.

There is no US vs THEM. Its only in the mind of sad little fanbois like you. The rest of the gaming world doesn't care that entire companies make good money catering to demographic who aren't socially restarted virgin basement dwellers who still believe fallout 3 should have been top down isometric made by interplay. Infact the "casual" gamers has something that makes them better than the "hardcore" crowd... at least if the "casuals" want to play something they go out and buy it instead of whining and moaning because the developer/publisher is bringing out a new DRM, doesn't include dedicated servers or is charging 100 MSpoints for a Map pack.

Heres the thing maybe some of you are very wealthy , but im not and I have visited the 2nd hand bin quite a few time ,times are tough enough to have to spend between 3 to 5 hundred rands a time on a game and yes there are games that we cant afford at the time because it doesnt fall into the budget ,and I know many gamers console and PC ,casual and hardcore have felt this .
And the end of it is if the purchase of a 2nd hand game +online pass is relative to a new game many gamers wont be able to afford it at that time and leading the game it self to be forgotten ,making no extra cash for developers.

This form of online access benefits the wealthy and not the common man...and if your not a common man you wont agree with this statement..to you it would phase you none cause you could pay the diffrence heck why buy 2nd hand you probably have the original already.

I know I have never bought every game I wanted

I feel sorry for u venom,same here I also couldn't have bought every game I wanted,I waited a year before buying cod4

Dude i was exaggerating to make a point ,im not saying that people cant afford games but rather people cant afford to buy every game ,and sometimes you have to choose between one or the other...and revist the other at a later date on special or 2nd hand ,but to me the meer fact that the developer has already gotten his due ,doesnt mean I have to pay that due again ....

I dont know its an opinion ,and everyone is entitled to one all of us ...but no matter how much we rant our compliments or comments fall on deaf ears ,as long as the bottom line is black developers control.

Uhg. Nobody can argue with console kiddies who think the innerwebs comes from a majik bawkz

Sarcasm on/
Oh yeah I completely forgot, if you play on a console you have to be a "BroGamer" since we all know that to be a "true"[read hardcore] gamer you HAVE to play on PC like all the other l33t kids.
/Sarcasm off.
Come back then you learn to debate.

Rustpuppet wrote a really intesting Opinion piece back in August entitled Gaming At All Cost I think it ties in very well to what your saying.

Those, like myself, who game on all 3 platforms are not necessarily well off or more so that someone who owns just a pc or just an xbox or just a ps3. My deal with my wife is 1 game a month, if there is anything out i want, regardless of new or pre-owned. Sometimes if i get a good deal on a pre-owned title ill get 2 games. If however the month was particularly hard, we all have those unforeseen expenses popping up, and a title I want is released I'll wait for it. Bioshock 2 & Dakrsiders Wrath of War where both released early this year but I waited 3 months till i spotted them in a pre-owned bin before getting them. Why? Coz I simply didn't have the finances to buy a game, let alone 2 games on release at that time. What i am trying to say is that you dont have to buy the game new, you dont have to buy it on release day.

As for this online pass, it is something extra that you don't have to have. You dont HAVE to have access to online modes in all your games and the ones you do you simply save up for an then buy new rather tan pre-owned. There are more than enough titles that can keep you occupied for a long time without the online functionality. EA aren't stopping you from shopping in the bargain bin and they aren't painting the trade of pre-played games as some sort of seedy back alley dealing, they are simply offering you a choice, all they are asking is they should you choose to buy a title pre-owned rather than new and you want online functionality that you pay them, on who's servers you play & who made the game, their due. Again it is the want/need of the consumer that gives this functionality its value.

Azimuth on the article linked above:
I totally agree with everything in this article. Seriously, if R400-R700 is too much for you, find a cheaper hobby. It's that simple.

Making it about wealth vs poverty is what i would call a "moochers" way of arguing. "Why should they (the rich) be able to own <inset expensive item of choice> while We(the poor) have to make due with without it simply because we dont have as much money as them." does it not sound similar to the "Why should they have all the jobs, while we go hungry, just because we didn't <insert excuse here>" argument that is heard oh so often in our society, specifically in this country?

I know I have never bought every game I wanted

No body has, not at release anyways.
