Fallout 4

I have been around the whole "hype train must play at release" block a few times, more than a few and every time its a train smash of some kind. I have plenty to keep me busy for a long while to get it later.

The funny thing about a computer game is that it doesn't go off or rotten or get worse the longer you wait, with patches and DLC, they actually get better. And cheaper.

I've also gotten over the have to play it now mentality. I am excited for the game, but have plenty enough keeping me busy atm so I will hold off for a while, the game is going nowhere. :)

So I went and traded in my crappy Arkham Knight purchase for fallout 4. sucks that my internet sucks, guess I'll be playing it this weekend only :p

Also, choosing the right perks is a hard decision. So many different one's I want and that would be useful, and I never know which ones to take first

This part is tricky but just stick to what you want to be, for me its not too difficult. I know I like being sneaky and playing from a distance so any kind of perk that is going to help with that kind of gameplay is what i will go for :)

I'm always keeping 1 point available so I can put it wherever its needed at a moment's notice (hacking or lockpicking for me specifically).

I am finding myself struggling with combat (I'm a keyboard/mouse FPS kinda guy, and I got the PS4 version) so I'll probably bump up agility and VATS perks.

Well, so far I've been a gunslinger so I'll have a look at what perks will assist me in that area more. Maybe I should approach the game a bit more cautiously.

I always go for a sniper build. I love crouching up on a hill and taking bandits out from a mile away. I always try keep a stock of mines to lay down behind me a few feet away too, to deal with any thing coming from behind.

Its gloriously fun!

Still playing New Vegas, will get FO4 when the price drops. Im never in a rush to play new games.

I'm finding myself being completely overwhelmed by the wasteland. 6 hours in and I'm level 8 only, as I've spent way too much time building and fixing my town up. Haven't even been to Diamond City yet. Still finding out what type of build I want to play as. I'm thinking of a more rounded soldier/warrior type, but the wasteland is not kind or easy on me at all.

I'm a little miffed that they destroyed a core pillar upon which the Fallout series has always relied, in this case character specialization. In every Fallout game to date you had to spend some time considering how to spend your SPECIAL points so that you could specialize a character you'd like to play. Now you can just up your SPECIAL points any time you level up, turning every single character into a jack-of-all-trades. It harms replayability and removes a layer of depth that has been part of the franchise since the very first game.

Oh well.

ffs. paused the steam download to quickly reboot my pc and now its restarting the download from 190mb. It was at 18gb before i paused it.

ouch brah, that has to hurt.

Did you exit steam after pausing? Or did you restart directly after pausing?
Maybe it didn't have to time to actually pause.

Ouch. I've had that happen with a few games now. And no matter what you do, that data is lost. Good practice with bigger games is to backup the downloaded content when it's partway through. That way if it happens you can just copy it back into the download folder.

Yeah I always exit after pausing. Only happened to me once before so I figured this quick reboot wont make a difference. I'm on a capped account so that's gonna hurt me po.. educational video downloads this month.

Yeah, I also liked the old way of levelling your character better, so far. On the other hand, you don't HAVE to spend your points on SPECIAL stats if you don't want to. I only spent two points extra to get my endurance to 8 for cannibalism. I have most stats at 2 and AGL at 1, but my Charisma is 10 and I'm playing mostly the way I want to. I use the perks in the charisma tree to help with combat and endurance perks help me survive.

At least it seems that you can still specialize your character. I want to make a high STR low CHAR Mad Max character at some point (Codsworth will actually call him Mr Rockatansky).

You actually do get forced to spend your SPECIAL points in ways you don't necessarily want to. That is, unless you don't mind many settlement features being inaccessible.

Yeah, I really don't care about settlements, at least not for now. Did the first few things at Sanctuary and it really is not what I want from the game. I'll do all the quests for any settlements I come across and get allied with them, but I'm not the least bit interested in building and defending etc. I bought the house in Diamond City and the only things I built there was storage containers for all the shit that I hoard. :p

I don't know if you saw this article in the steam news feed for Fallout 4, but it is quite a good read. The author also struggled with the game as a result of his build since he focused everything on luck and charisma and had no combat skills.

If you're running an AMD card and you're struggling to get a consistent 60FPS, go to your Catalyst Control Centre -> Gaming -> 3D Application settings and create a profile for FO4. Then change Tesselation from AMD Optimized or Application Controlled to Override Application and set Tesselation to 16x or 8x. It makes very little difference to the visuals.

By default FO4 sets it to 64x which is a bit heavy on many AMD cards. This made a massive difference to FPS on my HD7850. I now get pretty consistent frames with most things set to High and textures to Ultra.

I believe Nvidia does this on purpose with their "Gameworks" games as AMD suffers with handling tessellation. They worsen performances on Nivida cards a little bit too, but the hit on AMD is much bigger, and makes it look as if AMD cards can't run the game properly.

It's pretty fucked up, and reminds me of what Intel did back in the Phenom 4 day's. They were getting destroyed by AMD, so they started bribing companies to use Intel, and had a bunch of code compliers rewritten so that if an AMD CPU was detected, the code would basically become purposely unoptimised. There were literally boolean flags that detected this. AMD eventually won the lawsuit against them, but by that time they had lost so much money, that the few billion Intel had to pay was chump change. And of course, now we have a situation where very little progress is being made with desktop CPU's, because there's hardly any competition.
