Far Cry 3: Ubisoft have learned from Far Cry 2

Guyz just one thing.... Crytek developed Far Cry 1, 2 and by extension 3, was and is being developed by Ubisoft. So.... thread heading should read...

Far Cry 3: Ubisoft have learned from Far Cry 2

Like Omega pointed out Crytek had nothing to do with Far Cry 2.

I'm glad they are correcting their mistakes. I really enjoyed FC2 when it was released, but those stinking checkpoints really marred the experience a whole lot.

How many years and people are still getting this wrong. :)

The tags in the article is right though :wtf:

Yeah the game its self wasn't bad but the rapid respawn at checkpoints, useless stealth and stupid weapon arrangements did hurt the experience.

Looking forward to seeing what FC3 has done to improve.

Please please please less traveling... or atleast let it be for significant reasons.

I think they have a fast travelling system, but they say there are going to be a lot of little things to find so you will be rewarded for exploring this time. Think open world RPG type experience.

100% correct, however the game engine of FC2 The Dunia Engine is a game engine designed by Kirmaan Aboobaker while working at Crytek. It is based on the CryEngine but was heavily modified by the Ubisoft Montréal development team for use in Far Cry 2.

thats probably where the confusion comes from.

You know, I've started wondering just how far an open-world can really carry a game. It's really easy to slap open-world on the back of the box nowadays and expect it to sell just off that, but then the game world ends up being bland and boring. It really limits what you can do in a game world, especially because you can't control how and when players see certain things.

Just look at Far Cry 1, some of the settings and scenarios were amazing due to the fact that the developers controlled where you could and couldn't go, but in contrast, Far Cry 2's world felt bland and boring. A bit of linearity isn't always a bad thing.

As another example, I much preferred the world in STALKER SoC with it's more linear approach to allowing you to progress through the maps over CoP's more open-ended, larger maps. CoP's maps felt a bit bland in comparison.

Fixed, sorry, Monday monring noobery.

In one of the dev interviews I watched they basically said that they want you to have the open world experience where you can tackle a mission the way you want to, whether that be you coming at it via a hang-glider, guns blazing or sneaking in via the water.

On the other hand they also want you to have a focused experience where they can wow you with some cool set pieces. So as you are doing a mission you will slowly be focused from your freedom into a more linear section where they can place you into more cinematic scenarios.

I have to say that all in all they are being rather ambitious with this game, but if they can pull it off it could be one of the best FPS game of this year.

I really hope it will be like you say. FC2 was way too boring. And the driving...gawd. Such a ballache. The story was super boring, and the "set-pieces" if you could call them that was really unimaginative, in my opinion.

I'll wait for the reviews first though and then decide. It's looking good, but if the game is going to be too much like FC2, I think I'll take a skip.

Even that would be fine, coz I got so fed up with traveling in FC2 you drve from cpt to jozi only to do something small then back again to complete a mission, or you die and you back at you safehouse which is >9000kms away from mission area.

I'm going to wait and see what people think of the game 3 months after release before deciding to get it or not. Remember, FC2 got stellar reviews. It was only after a few months that people realised what shit it was.

Yeah I know, exactly why I'm also holding back. I really want it to be a lekker game, but yeah, but skeptical these days.
