Final Fantasy 14 Beta Starts 11 March

If you're anything like us (or our partners over at Massively), you were hurriedly clicking refresh on the official VanaFest 2010 website for news about the now eight-year-old Final Fantasy XI MMO last night. If you were, then you might've caught the momentary mention that the first wave of (closed) beta testing for the next Final Fantasy MMO (that's number 14, for those of you playing along at home) will be going live on March 11.

Square also assuaged fears of missing out on the closed beta by saying that "Those who were not selected in this drawing, fear not, for there will be other opportunities to come," adding that interested parties should "Be sure to stay tuned!" We figure if we're not invited, you know, all the more time to play that other Final Fantasy release, right?

I got high hopes for this one, and this is coming from a cynical, pessimistic bastard :p
 
Personally I am looking forward to it. As long as they don't go and make is easymode and allow for constant solo-ing, I will be happy. FFXI Online was nice because it actually forced people to group 99% of the time to accomplish anything *SHOCK!!*, unlike all these 'singleplayer' MMO's. But I would not mind a more flexible approach, but they must not make it like WoW, which I doubt they will.

Besides I am not sure you know what FFXI Online was really like Lydon. Most of these other anticipated MMO's are more likely to be, "Same shit, different name as has become the norm :rolleyes:".

Yeah it is veeeeery old-school MMORPG-ing. But the sense of achievement in it is great since they reeeeeeally make you work for everything. The story in it was also great and was done well.

From what I understand FFXIV Online will me more a mixture. It will have solo elements, but with a good focus on group play still. I just hope they do not fall into the same trap as all these failures post WoW, which try to just imitate WoW.
