Free games on xbox live (For Gold)

It's cool that MS is trying to catch up to Sony by also offering free games to subscribers, but can't they at least give away better games? Fable III is terrible, got a boxed copy for free, played it for about an hour and never touched it again, it's also really old whereas Sony is giving away much newer stuff and much more of it. ACII is good and Halo 3 (although I don't like it) is not bad either, but they are both really old as well.

I signed up for PSN+ almost a month ago and already I have downloaded X-Com Enemy Unknown, Kingdoms of Amalur, Dead or Alive 5, The Cave, LittleBigPlanet 2, LOTR War in the North on PS3 and Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Sine Mora and Rayman Origins on Vita. Next month we're getting Battlefield 3, Saints Row 3 and Payday on PS3 as well as Ninja Gaiden and Unit 13 on Vita. I understand that with XLive you get to keep the game forever where with PSN you have to still be a subscriber to use it, but I really can't see why anyone would not stay a subscriber indefinitely once they sign up.

I wish I could say I'm experiencing the same as the other users in this thread... But I'm not...

I went to download Fable 3 from my South African Live Gold account, and while it allows me to get to the very final screen (just where it confirms the download and the download should begin), it pops me up an error messaging saying "This item is not available for your location".

Can't understand why others seem to not have this problem...

That's very strange! I bought mine just fine on my South African account.

I'm going to pm James and hear if they can maybe find out from Microsoft South Africa what the story is for South Africans and the free games.

I'd be interested to hear the official word.

I spent over an hour with the online live support on the xbox site earlier today, explaining the issue and having one of the support staff try to help me resolve it. We established that a possible cause for me, is that my billing information is set to the UK, and it is impossible to change which region the billing information is tied to. When I originally bought my first live membership years ago, before there were S.A memberships, both my account and my billing/account information were UK.

I then used the region migration option, changing everything to ZA, and buying a ZA Live Gold account. But apparently despite the migration I did, the actual billing locality remained unchanged, and not even the tech support staff were able to change it. I still see games priced in pounds (though surprisingly they were in Rands for a while after migration, but then reverted back). The support staff then forwarded my request to another team in the company, who I am now waiting to hear back on.

It's all very convoluted it seems.

Can't believe this. The free game that came out today is Joyride Turbo , the controller version of Kinect Joyride! WTF!
I thought we were getting proper titles not some crappy arcade title!

Eh, thanks for posting. I forgot about the free games. It may not be a big game but it looks like fun. Will give it a try. For some reason I thought that one of the Halo games or Assassin's Creed 2 will be the free offering. Don't know where I got that idea from.

I was also expecting either Assassins Creed 2 or Halo 3 to release on this program today. Then I went and checked Microsoft's announcement again and it turns out that these 2 games are among others releasing untill the end of the year.
Since I already have AC2 I was hoping to get Halo 3 and was looking forward to other triple A titles. Now I'm starting to think AC2 and H3 are the highlights and the rest will be in the same cast as this crap they are giving us today.
What pisses me off about this is that this game, though it may look semi ok is an arcade title, I was under the impression that we were getting retail titles on this program.
Seems also like there are different releases in different regions. Just checked MajorNelson and the USA is getting Defence Grid: The Awakening. People are very angry in the comments to that announcement.

This first offering is highly offensive in my eyes - MS must come to the party and offer proper games. Load of rubbish. Look at PS+ - They offering top titles!

PS+ you "rent" the title, with Xbox you actually own the title. Huge difference into why PS+ can offer you the game "free"... because it's for a limited time only

Where do you see this info about the Xbox version being yours to own indefinitely without restriction? Not saying it isn't true I've just never bothered to look. Also PlayStation+ free games aren't time limited. If you activate then on your account you have access to then as long as you are a subscriber.

Joyride Turbo is not great. Standard cart racer but uses your avatar which is cool. unlocking cars is a pain though, gotta collect hidden car parts on the tracks.

Well I have had Crash course, Aegis wing and Harms way on my console for a year and a half and I can still play them, not sure about the GoD system but for arcade games, free is free!

dont doubt something if you never bothered to look for info on it at all

he Game for Gold program requires an Xbox LIVE Gold subscription to receive the free games. However, the game is yours to keep once it is purchased even after the Gold subscription expires.

The promotion was announced by Microsoft during E3 and will run through November when the Xbox One is released. Director of Programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb indicated that there is a chance that the program could be extended though. An extension would be welcome by Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers as the free game promotion for Playstation Plus subscribers gives the PS3 and PS Vita a leg up.

I see the current free game is Assassin's Creed 2. :D

I've played it before but it's great for people who haven't.

Same here. If I didn't already have this game I'd most definitely get it. Can recommend it for anyone who hasn't tried it yet. AC2 is in my opinion one of the best in the franchise.
Pitty the DLC's aren't included though. I was lucky enough to get the Game of the year edition that also included them.

Currently we are getting Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet while the rest of the world is getting Might & Magic Clash of Heroes. It looks like the next game will be Halo 3.
