From Dust PC needs constant internet connection, some customers getting refunds

Ubisoft are making some great games at the moment, but they certainly aren't gaining a lot of fans with this always-on internet business.

Always on internet is just the next step in anti-piracy, but unfortunately it's already proven itself unsuited for the job. Of course that means that the next even more invasive and annoying anti-piracy measure is just around the corner...

Well apparently the issues go beyond just the DRM, quote from RPS.

And then, the struggle to get the game to play (there are myriad issues being reported with the game, especially the menu screen’s not loading which I experienced on one launch) isn’t rewarded by a proper port. The first thing to notice is that the game is capped at 30fps. With PCs offering four times that, being locked off at a crappy console limit is good evidence of how little effort has gone into the PC version. Worse is the lack of options. Yes, it can be run in a window (for some reason not at the largest resolutions though), but beyond that you’re on your own. Anti-aliasing? No chance. The game is made of staircases on a machine that could be making it look beautiful. So what were they doing during the eleventh hour delay?

So it's a crappy port with crappy DRM, next thing Ubisoft will tells us their games don't sell well on PC. At least no-one is pirating them right, right? :)

I've seen a post on reddit where a guy wanted a refund for this always on internet requirement, but it was refused by Ubisoft...

Ubisoft made a huge mistake by lying about their DRM protection. Always on connection is a very severe form of checking for a game that isn't really in an MMO environment. Advertising it as an activate once and then switching it up only makes matters worse. Very dumb move.

So much for Ubisoft pulling DRM as they promised... *sigh* and here I actually wanted to buy it this weekend.

Damn!! Guess il just HAVE to get this game a different way... Get a cracked version n not worry about this stupid always online thing...

Ubisoft to release patch that will remove DRM checks

Ubisoft has now officially (as official as their confirmation of a one-time activation DRM check...) declared that they are working on a patch that will remove the DRM checks entirely.

We recognize that one of our posts in the From Dust forum regarding the need for authentication in the game was not clear. We sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding. Our tech teams are working on a patch that should release in approximately two weeks that will eliminate the need for any online authentication. This development time is required as we are working to ensure that those who have already started the game, and who’s progress is currently saved on our servers, will receive and save their game information locally. Once the patch is ready, players who already have the game will automatically receive the update on their next login and subsequent game sessions will be 100% offline.

Took them long enough to realize that what they did is absolutely wrong. Should be good news for all From Dust owners!

Go Ubisoft Go, eat your words...
and then comes the promises....

no wonder game hackers are making illegal copies with offline patches...

Glad i did not get around to buying it yet...
