A little while back Ubisoft’s UK forum manager ms-kleaneasy made a very clear announcement stating that despite always-on internet being a standard requirement for Ubisoft PC games in recent years, From Dust will “release with DRM requiring a one-time only online activation. After which you will be able to play the game offline”.
As it turns out, this claim was totally false, as From Dust, like other Ubisoft titles requires that players maintain a constant connection to Ubisoft’s Uplay servers.
In a unforgivably underhanded move, Ubisoft deleted the above forum post, but restored it when the above-linked screenshot began doing the rounds.
This has obviously lead to a lot of outrage among customers who read ms-kleaneasy’s statement and took it as fact. To make matters worse, Rockpapershotgun asked Ubisoft for comment, and received the response “I can confirm that From Dust won’t require a constant internet connection, as before,” despite the fact that this clearly is not the case.
Now a number of gamers are appealing to Valve and Ubisoft for refunds, which seems like a fair course seeing as that an untrue statement was made by an official Ubisoft employee about the game prior to its release. While some have reported success, more reports are coming in that Steam is rejecting requests on the basis that the details regarding the game’s DRM are clearly stated in the product description, which again, seems like a fair response from Valve.
Others are reporting more success by going straight to Ubisoft, although the process apparently takes up to about 3 hours, which may not be worth the R105 refund for many.
Ubisoft’s latest statement
Hi guys,
re the DRM – we are hoping to have an official statement soon.
Those of you unhappy with the way the game is running on your system, please contact Support, to see if they can improve it – please make sure you have updated drivers and the game – there is an update available after install – before you contact them.
If that is not the resolution your after, I’m sorry but one here on the forum will be able to deal with any refunds or personally answer individual complaints.
If you contact the retailer – or if that’s not an option, Ubisoft Support they can advise you further on the next stages you need to go through if you wish to pursue a refund.
