GameTrailers gives MW2 PC game of the year.

Yes that's right, GameTrailers gave the PC game of the year award to MW2 and not the obvious best PC game of the year (Dragon Age: Origins). I used to somewhat respect the site and what they do, but this just reeks of favouritism and bias.

Link - Not a direct link though

They also gave it PS3 game of the year and game of the year. You decide whether that's deserved or not.

Funnily enough... I have seen quite a few lists this week - Top 10 PC Games of the Year, Top 10 Games List of the Year - listing MW2 in these lists.
Some even raved about the MP.

Different strokes, I guess.

So the game that has broken all the records there is on this planet basically is not deserving of this?

Although i dont believe in Game of the Year awards you simply cant ignore what MW2 has achieved.

They actually have decent broadband overseas, so the MP probably works great for them.... :(

I disagree with you, i've bought so many games this year and the one I really enjoyed the most was Dragon Age Origins.

Biggest money waster of the year was Rogue Warrior and MW2 - PC(steam makes the game very broken for me and I have endless issues waiting for games)

Personally I thought that the single player aspect of MW2 was epic to say the least. PC MP was broken and it's still broken. And those hacks don't make it fun at all.

True man, Dragon Age Origins or Batman AA was the most deserving games of the year.

Just because lots and lots and lots of people buy it, doesn't necessarily make it game of the year. I firmly believe sales have more to do with marketing and hype than they have to do with the quality of the game. Obviously there is a link between the quality of the game and some of the sales, but directly equating the two is just silly.

For instance, MW2 had a high-quality SP campaign, which lasted between 6 and 10 hours. However, DAO had an even higher-quality (imo) storyline which lasted for 60-120 hours on the first playthrough. Sure, MW2 has MP, but once you've reached level 70 (about 30 hours ingame, or so), there is frankly nothing else left to do in the game, apart from chasing accolades, badges and challenges. Going Prestige is just doing the same thing over again...

Of all the games this year, my GOTY pick would have been between DAO, Batman AA or Borderlands. The short length of the MW2 campaign disqualifies it from selection, in my eyes.

Exactly! I dont understand this association with sales equals how good the product is. If that were the case then Dead Space should have sold 4 million units which it didn't even come close to. Modern Warfare 2 was not a bad game but it certainly wasn't the best game of the year. On PS3 its quite clear that Uncharted 2 was the better game, yet MW2 won. I sometimes dont understand how there decisions are made.

It sounds very conspiracy-theory-like, but I suspect a number of decisions like this are influenced by the publishing houses giving money/benefits to the reviewers/judges. For those who think this really is ridiculous, just look at the scandals over the past couple of years with regards to simple game reviews (Ubisoft and the Assassins Creed debacle, for example). While good reviews almost certainly equate to more sales, the marketing people would be even happier if the game got one or more GOTY awards...

Green Orb does this Game of the Year award even mean anything to any out and out gamers out there?

Obviously its very opinionated, a lot of people liked Dragon Age a lot and a lot MW2, but its silly to even try and compare the two.

I dont think its fair to disregard the sales figures for MW2, i mean seriously its the biggest launch in history, not even the English twat with glasses on made so much money when it launched, yes the single player is 6 hours long(mind you it was a simply brilliant SP and if you say otherwise i dont really know what you want in life then), the spec ops mode is seriously underrated(guys who liked Cod5 zombies would love some of the Spec Ops co op missions) and the MP even without dedis is still the most fun out there when it comes to online MP.

We can sit and never argue forever about the merits of both games and thats why i say this GOTY awards doesnt mean anything, its your own opinion...

Yet they do anyway. Fancy that.

You cannot draw a cause and effect relationship between the quality of a game and the game's sales. Take for example, HL1. It clearly sold fewer copies than MW2, since MW2 holds the record for both sales quantity and revenue generated. As a result, you would have to assume, if your hypothesis held true, that HL1 is in fact inferior to MW2. Which, I'm pretty sure, we'd all accept as false.

While we may agree that MW2 is the FPS of the year (and I do feel it is), I'm convinced it isn't worthy of the GOTY award. Defining a GOTY should be not be ruled by the quantity of sales of the game. Sure, it may be a factor, but a very small one.

While the GOTY is an opinion, it still carries a large amount of weight, specifically with the marketers. The reason it does so is because so-called industry heavyweights have all congregated for a day or more and decided that, based on what they know of the industry, this particular game deserves the GOTY award. This then suggests to the customer in the street that, should they purchase any game in a particular period, it should be THIS game, because the people who really know whats happening think it's the best game. Which generates extra sales. Which is why the marketing people are happy.

So anyway, while the GOTY award may be opinion to US, to the people who haven't bought the game, it's a very valid point to take into consideration when deciding which title to buy...

I agree with you. I definately didnt mean to say that because its the highest grossing game ever then automatically its the best of the year. My point is that MW2 has got some serious weight behind it even though there is also problems with it. But Dragon Age also has its problems.

Personally i think MW2 is a definate 1st Person MP award deserving but the GOTY is still too debatable. I think both games are brilliant but i think it was the storm with MW2 that got it that award. But if we look at the whole world in any sort of business and things its usually the most popular person, movie, artist, sport star, etc who get the best of the year awards.

I agree with you, they normally release a GOTY edition in the bargain bin roughly about a year after launch, regardless of how much money it has made.:D

The GOTY editions will be the same price as its now. COD4 took how long to get of the R299-00 bandwagon?
