Getting emotionally attached to your character(s) / party. II

I'm almost at the end of dragon age 1, but I've developed this connection to my main character and some of the party members. Last time I've felt this connected was with my mass effect 1/2 main.

There's been other few like my mage in wow, cleric in rift, but strongest link by far was Jaheira and Viconia from baldurs gate.

However loosing Arebeth (NWN) and being not able to do anything about it really had me bit depro lol. O how have I worked out what could have been and how I might have saved her in my minds eye. Why she had fallen and justifying it.

The question again like in the original thread is do you get attached or emotionally involved with your characters? does it still happen and is this a part of immersion and escapism for you ?

( might be a tub of ice-cream for me tonight as I close the curtain on DA1 :( :D )

Don't usually get swept up in the emotions of a game, usually the game doesn't really capture it enough to get into it or think about it. I did feel a slight pang for Alistair in DA1 though. Got romantically involved with him, so it was a bit swak at the end.

You make it sound that I'm going snot and tears here :o :D

I felt that why about Altair and ezio playing Assassin creed. Look i know they stab, kick, punch and kill (BAD) people for a living but i get the feeling that there might be some righteously good about those deeds.

It gets to the point where i see myself scaling wails and running on roof tops as i sit in traffic, or what to buy a ticket to Italy just to experience the culture. I love the attachment i get from memorable characters and the trials and tribulations their face.

big ups to great games and the emotional

I get attached to my characters since I have put hard work and dedication into them and they are an extension of myself in the game.

If someone hacks my character I get angry and sad at the same time.

Played Heavy Rain yet? The start of the game is quite a mindfsck. :/ Most morbid game I've ever played, but loving it!

Oh ya, Heavy Rain was... heavy. But that was all about getting emotionally involved. I think that was the whole point of the game. The beginning was very slow, and then very morbid, but I think that was to set the scene and get you attached to the characters in the first place, and knowing that your decisions will affect the story and potentially get one of your characters killed just adds to the emotional involvement.

That was an awesome game. Well worth the play. btw, if you haven't finished it yet, I know who the killer is :D

I've never totally gotten emotionally attached to any char in game xD
Must be said though Witcher 2 changed that...I got quite attached to Triss Merigold especially where she got taken away...Instantly made me wanna find her and ask if she was ok :wtf:

Bonnie from Red Dead Redemption, I wont spoil it, but suffice it to say I grew attached enough to her to care about her fate. :)

Agro, the horse from Shadow of the Colossus, I didn't realise the attachment I felt for the horse until the last boss, it was emotional stuff. :p

Lastly, Alistair from DAO. By the end it really felt like we were friends and that's no mean feat.

Hints of it here...I wouldn't call it emotional attachment. Also usually not my char (can't see oneself in FPS) but rather an NPC. e.g. That chick in HL2.

Maybe Oblivion a bit...but thats more vs the world than the char.

Torchlight...the pet cat. :)

BFBC2...the squad to some extent. Esp in those rare instances when one has a solid squad that is teamwork orientated.

Oh and the Portal companion cube. :o

Much easier to get attached to characters in series. Although again I wouldn't call it emotional attachment in the true sense.

Shepherd and Miranda from Mass Effect 2. If you had a good Shepherd then you will see, I was really worried about if I would get him killed on the Suicide Mission from ME2!! And Miranda, well after he one side mission where you rescued her sister, that was touching.

Bonnie and John Marston from Red Dead Redemption. I grew attached to John Marston and his struggle to free his family, and I didn't know how attached I was until [SPOILERS]he fucking get's killed by that dickhead, Ross![/SPOILERS] I was pissed off about for a good few days! Bonnie, because all she wanted was to be happy and keep her ranch safe, did she manage this in the end? I guess we'll never know...

Elena in Uncharted 2. This was the only game that has managed to make me shed a tear. When she was almost killed by Flynn's grenade I was, and then we see her pass out in the monastery, I was sure she was dead. Then when I saw the grave I shed that tear because after all she had been through in Drake's Fortune and now Among Thieves I thought Drake was a dick for going off and having fun with Chloe, even when he still had feeling for her!

Final fantasy 8. Guess I'm a sucker for a good love story. Carrying Rinoa to safety and trying to keep up with her in space while her oxygen is steadily depleting...hits you hard lol. This was the game that started my final fantasy obsession.

Totally Agree!
That part was awesome on so many levels you cant describe the feeling.

I definitely started caring for my character in Jade Empire, especially when the story twist that happens with your mentor. I was agitated very much! It really did make me want to set things right immediately.

Another one is Hotel Dusk in the DS where one of the roommates as so annoying I really wanted him to suffer. haha.

Mass effect 1 and 2 for a start: Virmire in 1... and the whole build up to the suicide mish in 2...
