Goodbye 8800GT?

So it looks like my 8800GT is giving up on me. It still works fine for the most part but it's randomly freezing my system leaving the screen all garbled. It started today while watching an episode of True Blood. I reset the PC and continued watching and after a while the same thing.

I removed it, cleaned it out and tested the on board GPU which gave me no issues. I re-inserted the card and tested a game, same story - garbled image and system freeze. I checked the GPU temp and it's the same as always, hovering around 70c at idle. I used Rivatuner to crank the fan speed up, dropping it to about 63c, but still freezing.

Should I just give up hope on this card? This means no gaming until I can afford a replacement. :(

I had the same problem with my 8800 GTS, it started freezing and then eventually i decided to cook it in the oven because apparently it fixs some GPU's(serious)
But.. Mine just Failt.
that was a few months back.
Go dx11 :D

remove it, take off heat sink.
remove all dust in case n heatsink with compressed air.
replace thermal paste on heatsink
reassemble, done

What is the warranty on the 8800 series of cards???? coz mine is also starting to give out on me... slowly but surely its gonna die...

Funny you should mention this, i too for the last 2 or so weeks have been exp. something similar. I have already cleaned it out, though i didnt remove the heatsink. Should maybe give that a try, but will first need to find some paste. Else my upgrade will be sooner rather that later :)

Thanks for all the advice guys. I've cleaned out the card but will have to wait on removing the heatsink until I go buy some thermal paste. Strangely the card has given me zero issues so far today. I even managed to play a few games with no freezes. Whether or not the problems will crop up again, I don't know. If it does then it's back to my shitty onboard graphics till I can get a new card. I will go red this time, no way I'd go nVidia again after having one of their cards fail on me.

Still have my 8800GT almost 2 years now and still going strong...Although i am upgrading Christmas...Oh and btw i simply cant see the fuss with this DX11 bs. Spoke(arguement) with a friend today who is going to buy a 5750 and i told him its a 128-bit card, why would you buy a 128-bit card? Because of DX11 was his answer. So i quickly looked up some benchmarks and needless to say there is 2 games that support some dx11 elements and the GTS250 512mb outperformed the 5750 on some games...So imho this dx11 myth can kiss my behind...

Anyway i want to get a 5850 but eish its expensive...Probably getting a 4890.

So here we are, after a day and a half of no problems my card is back to stalling the pc... to top it off my keyboard also finally gave in....... im having to type this out with windows on-screen keyboard. it never rains...

yes its as clean as it will ever be. some googling showed that im not the only one to have this problem, its supposedly quite a common 8800GT problem. looks to me like i'll have to put it to rest. two years and one month i had it now. im very unhappy.

well i downloaded a new bios that is much more aggressive with the fan speeds and my idle temp is about 7-8c lower while idle. no system lockups as yet. i will try re-apply the thermal paste over the weekend and see if that helps.
