GPU Upgrade or not?

The reveal is in one month...
But the release? MONTHS!

My friends say a little less than that... ;) But I think that supply of any new GPUs will be constrained because the 20nm process isn't all there yet. A reveal or a paper launch, followed by small amounts of stock in November, followed by general availability in January sounds about right to me.

Don't quote me on that though. AMD is shuffling things around like mad, so their plans could change at the last minute. They have a slight upper hand and they need to use it now.

Your friends???
And they have not even revealed the 8000 range... What makes you think that they are revealing the 9000 range first?
Everything must go in ORDER :D ;)

If you are looking for a buyer on some of the old GPUs send me a PM. I'm interested in anything about a GTX 460 (preferably Nvidia).

I never said anything about the HD9000 range :P But if they're going to be announcing new GPUs this month, it'll be an announcement, followed by a paper launch with limited stock and then general availability a month or two later. That's what it was like for the HD5000 and HD7000 series.

I could even be wrong about the timeframe and AMD could have stockpiled chips for everyone to buy, but in my opinion that would be silly. They'd essentially be competing for attention with their own hardware in the new consoles and given that the console market is bigger right now, people are more likely to buy that than a new GPU upgrade at this time.

Also, prepare yourself for an even longer dry spell. If anyone thought that two years between a new generation of GPUs was long, the next one could be even longer.

Someone else was talking about the hd9000's...

I seem to remember AMD saying that they were re-thinking the code-naming of the GPUs. Apparently the 9 in the 9*** means something to do with the date...I'll do a quick check.

*EDIT*

Quoted: "The reason for skipping the HD 8000 series is most likely because AMD are already re-badging HD 7000 series GPU's as HD 8000 series parts to OEMs. We should expect the Curacao XT to feature 2304 stream processors (36 compute units) 144 texture units, 48 render back ends and a 384-bit memory controller. The Hainan will be less powerful, featuring 1792 stream processors (28 compute units) 112 texture units, 32 render back ends and a 256-bit memory bus."

I remember AMD saying it won't be 9*** though, I think it will be rebadged as R9-XXX where the R9 means "high end" series.

Woooops I pressed "Reply" instead of "Edit" ;)

Just to comment on the thread name...

If you even think about upgrading your graphics card, you should.

It is just a code in the model number...;)

I don't care what they call it. They can call it AMD Gay for all I care. If the card performs I will buy it.

WOW I know I should but don't want to when in a month new cards are coming out.

But can we get back on topic. I think I'm going to wait for next AMD series of cards.

If you aren't in a hurry, good idea. If you are the 780 looks nice... :p
