As the numbers are becoming more available, it's set to price at same (and.or slightly higher) than AMD's 6990.

AMD 6990 is beating it in performance.
GTX 590 is beating AMD in reduced power and sounds levels.

So... pick your poison.

AMD 6990: Top performer, slightly more noisy.
GTX 590: Same-ish price, less performance, less noise/power-usage.

FYI: taken from benchmarks numbers, not live game tests.
I see Maplassie has narrowed down some in-game test numbers for us.

It should also be noted that running a beast like either of the two, without using multi-monitor setup etc = huge waste of money.

I think I will stand with my decision to go with the 6990.

I wanna go for the GTX590. Prefer Nvidia. Just seen a review on guru3d and its only slower the the 6990 on 2 games that they reviewed. Just wanna see pricing when they actually arrive.

So that means the 590 and the 6990 will be very similarly priced!

Just something I noticed with all the benchmarks; The GTX590 is supposed to be two GTX 580's on one board. However, I have two GTX580's and they kick the snot out of the single GTX590 numbers. So you have to wonder, are you really getting two GTX 580s on one board in terms of performance. Paying R7400 for one card is VERY close to what I paid for two GTX580s. Anyways, just a thought :)

Hmm, thanks for the heads up. I'm really in a hard place with deciding between this card and a 6990. I just don't know hey..I'm very keen to try out an Nvidia card for the first time in forever, but I don't know whether it's worth it! And I also don't know which card is more future proof.

where the hell did you get a GTX580 for about R3700? Thats a very good price.

Keep in mind, they had to underclock the "cards" of the GTX590 due to power and heat issues, so yes, if you OC the GTX590 to the same clocks and mem speed, the performance would be the same...

And you'd also bring out the "power and heat" issues that they're trying to avoid. So it's a moo-point? (like a cow's opinion).

Not only would you bring back those issues... you're likely to start frying the actual wires from your PSU... those little things can only carry so much...

Like the 6990, the 590 is actually underclocked.

From those performance charts I don't see the correctly clocked 6990 (as 2x 6970) beating the 590 like the poster suggests.

And also like mentioned earlier, the cards used separately outperform these dual cards quite a bit due to the beater cooling available but you sacrifice space.

The 590 also has more overclocking headroom (although early versions had meltdowns :P) than the 6990s...

To me the clear choice; from performance, sound, heat and the driver support that nVidia provide makes the 590 a winner.

But once again, anything above a GTX570, or even a GTX560ti is overkill unless you have a multiple HD monitor set up.

I guess that is why they release the beasts first and the less powerfull workhouses second, cause people will opt for the better performance to value option, and the select few would choose the high end item first.

let me guess? You have a GTX570 or a GTX560. Have you ever tried to play Metro2033 on full? Dont think you have? Dont know if anyone else agrees.
