GTX1080 FE Benchmarks and info

The Joker

Thread Killer MKII
Hi guys

Quick shoutout to www.rebeltech.co.za for making sure I could get my Gigabyte GTX1080FE yesterday :D
Super happy about it lol

So I've decided to do a thread with some info and some benchmarks for you guys. If you guys have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

For anyone interested in Pascal, how it works and for all the juicy tech goodness you could ask for follow this link.

https://developer.nvidia.com/introducing-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080

I'm not going to be posting stock benchmark scores for now, all that info is available online. I would rather tackle the overclocking headroom and gain that was so heavily punted during the announcement.

If there are any specific benchmarks your guys would like me to run please say so in the thread.
Gaming benchmarks to come.

At the end of this thread I'll do a performance comparison to the GTX980Ti, right now there is absolutely no doubt that it is faster than a 980Ti in stock form and overclocked, but it's not all that clear what the performance gap is and I'll wait to the end to draw my conclusion as it's still to early to in the life cycle to do that.

Bare in mind these are not absolute max clocks, I used clocks that I found was game stable and then used those to benchmark. I will add absolute limit benchmarks at a later stage. Also remember these are day 1 drivers and there is no doubt that we'll see improvements over the next few weeks.

Would it be possible to run a Furmark bench for ~15 mins to see if the blower setup causes thermal throttling? I noticed that some board partnets MSI and Galax are adopting a blower style cooler for their base level non-FE GTX1080's.

I have checked out the boosting levels and whether it drops ect.
It's not actually throttling, it's just lowering the boost. Throttling is when a card drops down to stock or below stock because of thermals to protect the gpu.
GPU boost is just the gpu changing the boost as thermals change.

I know it sounds similar but the results are completely different.

As far as the boosting goes on the GTX1080FE.
When the card is running the stock fan curve it's fine for normal gaming, I saw temps in the low 70's, it maintained it's boost though but then again the boost is just 1734.

Once you start overclocking though things change dramatically, the stock fan curve is useless for overclocking..even a slight increase in clocks causes the cards boost to drop down. Once you set an aggressive fan curve or start running 100% it's perfectly fine and my card maintained it's boost clock of 2077-2088 no problem, even during heavy benchmarking. Max temp was 61c during the Valley 1440P Extreme run, fan speed was set @100%.

Awesome so the Blowers do not cause any major problems, and would be ideal for smaller cases with less available airflow.

You'll be fine, blower coolers are ideal for smaller cases as they exhaust out of the back of the case.
Only downside is the noise, blower coolers are generally quite loud.

Learning to OC pascal is turning out to be a real treat, it's been a while since I had fun overclocking and this card has reminded me why I love it so much.

I decided to start from the bottom and work my way up and the results speak for themselves.

This run was done on the 1st mission, during the rain storm, with some open air and indoor fighting.

Got mine from a source on Carbonite for R13 500.00. Was the Founders edition so had nice backlate and and and.
Sold it already though as I was able to get GTX 1080 Hall of Fame for R 13 800.00, was on special saving more than R 2 000.00 GregRedd

Thanks guys, good pricing for you both, and good to see suppliers ready to knock a bit off for early adopters. Think I'm going to wait a while for better stock levels to stabilise pricing a little.

In the meantime my missus might be going to the States mid-July on a business trip. Based on some of the comments in the other 1080 pricing related thread and site post, I'm wondering if she does go if it'll be worth me trying to get her to bring one back from there for me? (Assuming she stumbles past a BestBuy or B&H in between her stops at Macy's and Bloomingdales of course :) )

Anyone ever done something similar? What's the likelihood of her being hassled by airport security scans, and SA customs if she does manage to find one and carries in her cabin bag around the States, and subsequently back to SA?

Chance of them picking it up is good, however she needs to state that this is a gift. Always just say it's a gift. I have lugged various expensive pieces of kit around through US and ZA customs and the "Oh, it's a gift" line has not raised any alarm bells yet.

Someone I know does this thing where he prints a $1 - $10 invoice for the equipment. Scans and mails the original to himself, shreds the original and just travels with the $1 to $10 invoice for the "gift"

Gifts you bring back for your personal use must be declared, but you may include them in your personal exemption. This includes gifts people gave you while you were out of the country, such as wedding or birthday presents, and gifts you have brought back for others.

Gifts for more than one person may be shipped in the same package, called a consolidated gift package, if they are individually wrapped and labeled with each recipient's name. Here's how to wrap and label a consolidated gift package.

Be sure to mark the outermost wrapper with the:

Words "Unsolicited Gift" and the words "Consolidated Gift Package;"
Total value of the consolidated package;
Recipients' names; and
Nature and value of the gifts inside. For example, tennis shoes, $50; shirt, $45; toy car, $15.

Also

Rebate of duties on gifts – A person can receive two gifts per calendar year, of which the value must not exceed R400 for each parcel

Gift – A gift is classified as any item sent from a natural person abroad to another natural person in the Republic that is unsolicited by the recipient. These include but are not limited to weddings, birthdays, etc.

Please note that the following consumables are excluded from the rebate:
Wines
Spirits
Tobacco (Including cigarettes and cigars)
Perfume

Customs Charges – Should the value of the parcel exceed R400, customs charges will be paid on the total price actually paid for the item. On gift parcels where the contents are intended for more than one person and the total declared is more than R400, customs charges will be paid by the recipients as the rebate cannot be split and the gifts cannot be linked to people other than the recipient.

My friend has got a few parts from the States since his mother lives there and comes to visit him here periodically. He hasn't had any trouble getting them here - CPU's, Mobo's, GPU's etc.
