Guild Wars 2 Server options

I'll likely wait until release to decide on what server to roll on.

First prize would obviously be to join a server with the majority of SA players. However, I've played quite a few of the smaller MMO's after WoW (Rift, TSW, TERA, LOTRO), and the thing that really destroyed those games for me was low population.

I'm going to choose a server that has enough players on it, even if that doesn't end up being the one this thread decides on. I can't imagine anything more crap than rolling on a server with 100 players on it. Snore-fest.

My recommendation to the community is to:

1) Try and establish how large the SA playerbase will actually be.
2) Decide on a server with an expected population that will result in sufficient players on it to keep the game world alive.

It's all fine and well choosing LC for SA players because it's "unclaimed", but what's the point if there are only 80 of us? Or why choose LC if it's only ZA players, and in 2 months the playerbase goes from 300 to 100?

I would strongly suggest we try the 3 recommended servers and in some way find out population levels. We should be choosing one of the medium to high pop servers, as it is very unlikely that the SA community will be able to fill their own server. At release:

Whiteside will be full.

LC may be empty

PF is my choice based on beta and expected population levels. I don't RP, and I didn't see any RP on the server during the BWEs. I don't understand the resistance to this server type by some of you anyway. I've played many games on RP servers, and very seldom have I come across active RP. Also, to add, those RP servers did particularly well in pvp (maturity lends itself to attracting skilled no-bullshit players, I'd say).

Haven't seen a poll, but I'm provisionally voting PF.
I agree with you, nothing worse than no one around to play with in an mmo, due to lack of population

@Marick, very valid points, but I have been mentioning Shosa's Hollow because of the fact that we may still have the opportunity to free transfer in BWE... you have to keep that in mind: waiting for release will most likely cost you money to transfer.

There's no poll just yet - it will go up sometime between BWE3 and early access :)

Which, as most does not seem to get what I try to say, it will be too late... not everyone will be willing to pay for a world transfer on release. Why would they in any sense keep it free just on release; there will be 10000s of people wanting to transfer AND THEN the 'planned suitable server' will be in its own sense broken again... servers imbalanced again.

Maybe I missed this, but where did they say that World Selection will be available on release? If that's the case, then sorry... I didnt know :p

Yeah low pop is one thing that killed WoW for me, as you would run around stormwind and there would be like 20 players, so once i moved to another realm which was packed it kinda got me back into the game (for a short while).

If the reception just from beta access is anything, this game is gonna be popular, so if we did set up shop on a high pop not only will the likely hood of finding other sa players being higher, we also probably wont have low pop problems.

With the official launch of GW2 All characters will be deleted and we'll get a fresh start including server choice.

When you start a new game (release) you will be asked where in the EU/US would you like to make your home server.

Whats I am predicting is a mass of people joining random servers as "casual" players then a certain % of them will have friends in other servers that they would rather be in, or a guild they want to join.
In the end it will take about a month or more for people to find the servers they want to stay on.

As I said before I will be going where the guild is, as for my friends, if they on a different server I can guest on it and still play with them.

Chameleon, moet nou nie die "Shosaloosa" siekte kry nie, al die characters gaan gewipe wees op release, en jy sal weer n server moet kies wat jy jou HOME wil maak, BETA is net BETA :D

So whats the plan for BWE3 going to try Lakeside County again and hope we aren't put up against Ring Of Fire? :P

Yes that opposition is ROF ;), however it would be awesome if LC can be put against us (Shosa's Hollow) :)

As ons characters nie gewipe word.. so ek meer gefocus het om te level, lol en nie te poer poer nie.

Will be joining a server where PvP comes first with some other friends! Will probably decide on a server after BWE3 and Launch

Logically, absolutely everything would be reset when they do the character wipes. That would include homeworld choices - but I can't be 100% certain.

If not - then I'll probably end up staying on Lakeside County.

Just also keep in mind - reserved names are gamewide, and not server specific. So even if low population issues do occur, and they decide to merge servers, I don't see it upsetting anything.

The other thing worth mentioning, is that server choices only really affect WvW, and not much else. Guesting gives you access to everything except that.

All that being said, it would be nice if we could settle on one server together. I seriously don't think the low population thing is going to carry over. All the guys that complained about low population were those of you who were high-level already, and you were running around on a server with mostly low levels. That won't be an issue come launch. And there will also be a flood of new players following that - people who didn't pre-order or pre-purchase and will only be joining on the official launch-date.

In any case - I'm updating the OP with Shosa's Hollow as an option.

Before this final Beta Weekend Event (and before Guild Wars 2 launches on August 28) we’ll delete all existing beta information. Every beta character and all information or items associated with them will be deleted. However, we will be preserving your beta account’s contact list so you can easily connect with your fellow beta gamers during Headstart Access or after launch.

Well the wipes will also be wiping server selection so I think I will be going back to LC this weekend.

* Petrified Forest - This is a no go for me atm cause it’s an RP server chosen by gw2roleplayers.com. Thou weirdly it does list mixed guilds atm

* Lakeside County - 1 PVE guild listed on there atm. I will check it out the weekend, but from 7 years of WOW and other games has taught me it’s an awful idea to start of a Low pop server. Really does not help us if there is 100 SA ppl on there but after a while that's all that's left... You do have to realize that after a while a big % of people will actually stop playing like with all games.

* Whiteside Ridge - Mixed nationalities. Tbh it looks quite decent and I'll tell you why. Reddit is listen on there and I see a Polish guild also. Both of these are known to house some pretty skilled ppl.

* Shosa's Hollow - Nothing listed atm. Not interested unless thoroughly tested and some sort of stats provided. See LC for more into.

Ideally one would want a Med-High pop server, but not an overloaded one at launch. Yes a very hard choice to make, but that will ensure a long server life after all the "1 month wonder" players stop playing.

Has anyone checked out servers like Desolation or even how some of the more loaded servers like Gandara or Far Shiverpeak plays?

Im the one voting for Shosa's Hollow, as I have stated alot of times in this and other threads, LC WvW was bad!!!! Yes, LC had low population, so maybe that might have been the reason... Shosa's Hollow was medium pop, and we owned Arborstone [FR] and another server in the last BWE.

So, the potential for WvW success seems to be better than on LC.. I have tried 4 servers over the last BWE... two French language dominated, LC and SH... with SH being the one Im impressed about. Most people here dont 1) care as much for WvW as me or 2) dont see the implication of the statement "its not a problem because you can guest" for people that do think WvW will be a huge part of their gameplay time.. and have to play on a server which can fail completely on WvW. Im NOT saying I want a win-it-all WvW server, but what is wrong in nominating a server that has more potential?

Just want to know what makes LC so special that you guys want to stay there? Im just trying to see what you guys enjoyed on it.. definitely not WvW?

I think I'm just going to roll on Petrified Forest this weekend and check it out for myself. That should (hopefully) eliminate any RP fears and give me a good feel for what's to come :)

Problem solved for my vote, at least.

Greetings,

I have to agree with ChameleonDevil, Shosa's Hollow was by far the best WvW server i have been involved in. the others i tried failed miserably and there was quite a lot of under populated servers. Then again it all will change on release so I’m no against any particular server as of yet. Its more of a question where the rest of my friends and South African People are going to be on as the people playing the server make the server.
