Guild Wars 2

Maybe one day we'll have developers flying down here for rAge :D

I can dream...

Haha ... that being said - anyone planning on going to rAge this year?

Back on topic - I had a browse through the GW2 wiki the other night - it looks like the second confirmed class is the Warrior (it would have to be, wouldn't it?) but there aren't any details about it yet - with the Necromancer and Ranger having been mentioned off-hand during interviews (and seen in concept-art) - but neither of those have been confirmed.

Some rumours of an assassin class as well - but nothing on the wiki yet - I have this vague feeling they're going to have a scout type class but that's just a gut feel - so don't quote me on that. What I do know is that there will be 8 classes/professions. 2 down - 6 to go. If they're planning to demo the game in September, it hopefully points to a near completed project - so beta in October or November? Fingers crossed ...

Beta in november would be freaking awesome! plus it makes sense...

gives them time to implement bug fixes and stuff before launch.

which based my gut feel will be next year with the original GW's aniversary

Your gut makes a pretty good point ... now that I think about it :D

But having to wait until March/April - ouch!! Plus I don't think ANet will lead the beta by 4 months :( Which means January more like.

All this speculation is driving me up the wall ...

Skurm you have a point, but i'd like to point out. not all sci-fi fans like SW or ST...

like me. my intro to Sci-fi was Mechwarrior. so i could not care less about SW:TOR

we're few, but we do exist!

Garriot says scifi or fantasy doesnt matter. I agree with him. Star Wars? Lightsabers? Space Wizards shooting lightning out of their hands and moving stuff with their minds? It's dungeons and dragons in space. Avatar? Tall blue people riding 'dragons' and living in a forest shooting bows and arrows? It's Warcraft.... in space. Genre doesn't really matter much actually. People will flock to ToR, fantasy and scifi nerds alike. If you don't like Star Wars, it's probably more of a personal preference and not an indictment on the mentality of the masses themselves. 'Not all' you say? Maybe. But definately 'most', which is my point. Mass appeal. ToR has it. So relasing GW at the same time is, imo, a marketing nightmare, it would be like launching any new mmorpg the same time Cataclysm hits. Ie economic suicide. Half the reason WAR died was because of WotLK releasing a month after it launched.

Whether you have people waving light-sabers about or shooting lightning out of their hands - Star Wars is sci-fi no matter how you look at it. And you forget that Guildwars has one huge trumpcard -- it's free to play - I'm willing to wager big bucks TOR isn't following the same model.

And while Star Wars certainly does have it's loyal following - and will probably do better than Star Trek on that alone - fantasy junkies are much more likely to head towards the fantasy MMO ie Guild Wars.

Marketing nightmare? Not so sure - ArenaNet are being very subtle with regards to their timing and the amount of news they release - for those people waiting for the actual release, things are going to be at a fever-pitch by the time. Genre matters much more than you would think, as well.

And lastly, I don't think Cataclysm is going to be the saving grace people expect - there seems to be a hint of desperation surrounding Blizzard at the moment - dropping the learning-curve, making leveling easier, more releases, sneakily letting people know how many 'celebrities' are playing WoW. All seemingly aimed at gaining and retaining new players.

Personally I think WoW reached it's peak a while ago ...

Oh and ... wall of text. Eyes hurt ... :(

Well, if you look at the GW2 concept art, it looks like we'll be seeing the Elementalist, Mesmer, Ranger, Warrior, a Paladin-type class (possibly a reworked Paragon?), the Assassin and then what I assume is a Druid/Ritualist combined-type class (what with the Sylvari summoning beasts in some concept art, and the Asura summoning golems). And, as you mentioned, the Necromancer.

I would quite like that mix myself :)

My first character in Guild Wars was an Elementalist. However, I also love the Mesmer.

My first GW2 character will be one of the above professions (assuming they'll both be in). I am, however, going to wait until I see the Mesmer spell effects and read its description before I'll decide obviously, as I love me spell effects! The Elementalist has placed the bar pretty darn high.

Sylvari Elementalist :D Or summoner type - we'll have to see.

As long as there is spell-casting and serious pwnage of mobs involved :p

Human Warrior...

yeah what can i say, i'm bland :p

after that a spate of female characters :p

the warriors personal harem :p

I'm confused about whether to go Sylvari or Human. I'm loving the Human cities from what I've seen so far...

The Sylvari are something new and unusual - which is probably what prompts me to go for them. But I'm a known altahollic - so there'll definitely be others :D
