Headphone Suggestions & Recommendations

Just got my http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?products_id=978 (TubeMagic D1 DAC ) running through ATH-M50x headphones.
Current the audio is going out through optic cables (No EMI effects caused by mobo) and the audio is just so flipping crazy, just honestly have no words to describe the clarity, often finding myself taking my headphones off look around cause I swear I just heard my cat or the fiancé is calling only to find nothing.

Really so happy audio wise at the moment.

Ah man the TubeMagic D1 is fantastic! And the M50X is also a great pair of headphones.

How long have you been running that setup? After a few hours of burn-in, they're going to get even better.

I have had the headphones for about a year now (longest lasting ever), I ran them in for about a month, so when the volume is cranked up no rattles or extreme hissis. Yeah tube magic just changed it in a large way. Was running my headphones through on board, didn't realise I was missing just that little bit extra.[emoji13]

Haha wow going from on board audio to a dedicated DAC makes a huge difference.

You're running a really great setup there!

I have an old pair of HD201s that have served me reliably over the past couple of years. If you want to consider earphones (in-ear / plugs) look at Sennheiser's CX300 II. They are incredibly comfortable and you'll even forget you're wearing them...

Other than that, I'm anxiously awaiting my Audio-Technica's. They seemed like a steal at $59 on Amazon. Might still be at such a low price. Consider browsing Amazon tonight still for the tail end of Cyber Monday deals. You'll definitely get something much better for your budget from there, shipping and taxes included!
...and my ATH-M30x's have arrived! Testing them out as we speak, listening to Anubis Gate's new album "Horizons" using them. My ears cannot handle the awesomeness right now - it's such a massive step up from my old HD201s! Consider me a very very very very happy Audio-Technica fan at the moment.

I had the pleasure of using a pair of Sennheiser HD598's for a couple of weeks last year, but they didn't sound nearly as good as the ATH-M30x's do. It's surprising really, seeing as the Sennheisers are a much higher priced pair of headies. Might be the sound that the "veiled" Sennheiser sound is not for me?

good in you to treat your ears to awsum madness. Btw those headphones can go as loud to the point you can go to bed with painful ears.

Run them in first dude, I know the excitement is driving you crazy, but seriously run them in. You don't want rattles in the next year.

Nah, not listening loud at all. PC volume only at 12% right now while I work. Loud enough to drown out noise around me at home (mom in law on phone with policy arrangements and domestic worker is cleaning), but soft enough to allow me to concentrate. Not too fond of very loud music in general - those days are long gone!

Still, at very modest volumes they are impressive. Switched over to one of my all time favourite albums (Affector's "Harmageddon") now to compare and I immediately heard a difference. Could even hear sounds I've never heard before on the opening track. Considering they had a full orchestra playing on the album, I'm interested to check out more classical music with these headies.

Glad you're enjoying them!

As already mentioned, burn them in at a low volume and then increase it to about 50% after 10 hours. You'll find the 10 hours goes by rather quickly.

I can honestly recommend buying from Amazon. I ended up paying R650 for a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M30x and they are AMAZING. You can get a high end pair for that amount of money...

Must say I am completely overwhelmed with all the headsets/ phones out there. I think I was 100 % sure on what I was getting about 4 times but then I would see something else and the process repeated itself. I just want to game a bit and listen to movies and music on the odd occasion.

Im no audiophile so I think I will be happy with a headset. I see the reviews for the Kingston Hyperx Cloud looks really good. The mic is a bit hit and miss. Anyone here have a pair that can give feedback?

Also looking at the Corsair vengeance 2100's. Would like a wireless set as my dog ate my HD202s. But then I have another device to charge and I would like to use the set on my phone from time to time which these wont be able to do.

Also looking at HD429s as one can get a set for R659 from takealot. Great price but what mic do I get then? Don't see any online store stocking the Zalman mic1 anymore. Anyone know where I can get one locally?

Lastly Im also thinking of maybe getting a set of HD518 or HD558 from amazon as they are on sale it seems. Dont know if it is worth the price and risk over the HD429's. The cable is changeable so if my dog decides to eat it I can just swap them out. I dont know if the risk of not really having a warranty is one I am willing to take. If I import from amazon I can get the zalman mic1 or get the mod mic 4.0 I guess.

Uggggh these decisions. Someone save me from myself.

I've tested a pair of Hyper X Cloud's and they are indeed really decent, but if you're looking for a gaming headset I would def direct you to the Razer Tiamat 2.2.

By far the best "gaming" headset money can buy.

If however you're more into proper headsets you can't go wrong with anything from Audio-Technica, I'm a huge fan of their headies.

I own these bad boys:
