Headphone Suggestions & Recommendations

Didn't you have a set of those 7.1 Sonic headsets? Did those simulate surround sound effects properly?

Yeah they did and they did it really well for a sub R500 headset. The bass was a little on the muddy side but in terms of 7.1 sound, it performed extremely well.

Awesome thread duck... it's like a Wikipedia page that's given me a starting point :D

Is there a large difference between the Sirus S (you wrote Sirius) and Sirus.

I was also thinking of whether I should go headphones and headset separately: Sennheiser HD 429 and buy a really cheap headset. I play quite a bit of Dota but listen to music the rest of the time.

I suppose I could summarise that last question to: is there a headset with sound quality better than the HD429s that costs around the same price?

Awesome thread,I NEED a new headset for online play.I hate wearing headsets that irritate my ears and are heavy.

No problem! Shout if you need any help!

Thanks for this post actually researching headphones at the moment

No problem!

Corrected :)

The CM Storm Sirus is the superior headset in terms of audio and build quality, and range. The audio module/remote on the Sirus is also a lot more versatile than the Sirus S.

I would recommend the Sennheiser HD 429s over a headset.

1) it uses a 1/4" jack with an adapter if you need it. This makes it more versatile and can be used with proper external soundcards, phones, ipods etc
2) headphones almost always have better audio quality over headsets

And as you said, you'll be listening to music most of the time anyway. Instead of wasting your money on buying a cheaper headset, why not buy the Zalman ZM-MIC1 or any other low cost clip-on mic?

I've decided to go for the slightly more expensive 439s just because it looks like it has a thicker cable plus it's removable and comes with two lengths. The cable on my current HD201s is ridiculously long and thin (same as the HD429), and have recently 'snapped' due to me unintentionally twisting them. I wanna avoid that happening again :(... or at least be able to replace them.

HD439... R100 more than the HD429

Would you suggest the desktop mic or the clip-on one?

I didnt see the make I have a pair of gamadias eros headset, they really comfy and have great sound, it doesnt have noise cancerlation but when they on and im jaming BF4 I cant hear anything around me, and its mic is really good, it would fall in the 600-750 range of headsets

Currently using Sennheiser HD 202, recommended by DuckKnuckle - good advice btw - kudos to you, sir. Those headies are pulling their weight :)

Didn't want to make another thread, but I'm looking for a headset with a really good quality mic, been looking at the Turtle beach sets.

Price range anything up to about R1,500

Any suggestions ?

Yeah, stay away from Turtle Beach.

I have both the Siberia V2 and Sennheiser PC360, and the PC360's are leaps and bounds better, unfortunately they're out of your budget, but maybe save up a bit more and/or find a special? That's if you want to feel like headphones are having sex with your head.

Aaaanyway. Just a general suggestion, stay away from surround sound. It's all virtual anyway and a quality analogue pair, with a soundcard (headphone amp), will sound better AND give you better positional audio, because the surround is all done by software anyway - regardless if it's marketed as a "7.1 headset" or not. If you don't have a soundcard and don't have any intention of getting one you can consider a USB connection.

I can go a bit higher if it is worth it, not much of an issue there.

To be honest i dont really mind about the sound quality of the headset, i know if your paying over R1000 it will be good enough for me, i really just want a good quality, clear microphone, the good audio on the headset is a bonus.

They have been around since the 80's I haven't had anyone say anything bad about them yet.

Owned 2 pairs, found them to be sub-par.

Well I owned the G35's about two years ago, and they were one of my favorites. The mic is excellent!

After those I got the Chimera and found them to be virtually in exactly the same league as the G35's, but the wireless was nice.

I have a pair of Siberia V2's lying around for when my wife hijacks the PC360s. For the price they're very good and perform almost as well as the two sets above. The mic isn't as clear though but the sound is good. However, you need a sound card for these as they are analogue.

I don't own a pair of Corsairs' 2100 but a friend does. I tried them out and the sound quality is tops, and from being on TS and skype with the owner I'll say that the mic is very good as well.

But as always, these are one of the best you can buy: http://www.takealot.com/gaming/sennheiser-pc-360-premium-headset-with-open-accoustics,10809595

Awesome thanks a lot, I'm leaning towards the Corsair Vengeance 2100, is there not a problem with hearing that breathing noise with that mic ? (no sponge cover)

I have the 1500's and have not had any complaints from friends and family on skype, razer comms and Axon.

Just use the provided software to change the threshold of the voice pickup volume.

The sponge cover is something that cheap mics need. Besides, they're quite unhygienic.

So, I need some urgent feedback from the guys in the know, specifically DuckKnuckle. I see Amazon has a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M30x on sale for Cyber Monday for a cool $59. Is it worth paying that amount of money for these headies?

I would absolutely love to get a pair before we leave to visit my folks in Cape Town over December and the estimated delivery time is perfectly timed for that. I already have a pair of ATH-ANC23's in my basket for my wife, as she wants a pair of active noise cancelling earphones for the long road to watch movies on her iPad. Total amount for the 2 pairs are R1,576.72 currently including shipping, taxes, etc.
