Help Voicy choose a phone !

Hi friends,

So my old HTC Imate JaMin decided to let its speaker go on strike.

I'm no fan of contracts and I only use my phone for occasional phone calls and 10 sms's a week - if that...and now and then gprs browsing.

I normally load R175 every 2-3 months, so my actual usage is minimal.

The new iphone looking nokia (i forget the type) seems like quite a nice one on the weekender contract, but I'm not very keen to sign a 2 year deal unless it's really honestly worth it.

What I need/want in the phone is:

More SMS storage capacity than my 3310 (15).
No mechanically moving parts i.e. sliders/flaps/gyroscopes.
preferably Web browsing/MSN instant messaging. If I find Mxit pre-installed on the phone I'll remove it with an angle grinder.

I see no point in spending >R1k on a phone, but I know nothing's cheap these days... So any ideas which would be a good/valid choice?

I've posted this on myBB without much response, so I thought I'd find more love being shared in here. So far the only proposal is a Nokia 3120.
 
You could go for the Samsung X1 its not a bad phone I setup the synchronization on my bosses phone to get his emails.... its very user friendly and not bad with the Windows mobile on there :D
 
Have a look at the N series Nokia's you can pick urself an n70M or an n73 up for dirt cheap in the stores these days !

Eish...well most phones these days use the phone's memory for SMS storage.

For under 1K though you're not going to get much, so I'm not sure.
 
I'm also in the market for the phone, so have started looking around...

Voicy, I think you are referring is the Nokia 5800? It is touch screen, and basically fully loaded, GPS, 3.5G, wifi, BT, 3.2 Carl Zeis cam, 128MB phone meory, 8GB memory card (included!), Symbian 9.4.
A guy at work got it for R1000 on a Talk75 contract with Vodacom. I think MTN is also running a special on it atm.

I refuse to get an iPhone. I don't think the phone or the price is worth it. One of those overhyped things.

I am also looking at the Samsung Omnia. It is a wickedly nice phone this, Windows Mobile, and also fully loaded, GPS for life, etc.

I don't know what these phones speakers, reception and battery life are like. I am waiting for more feedback from the people I know. ;)

I have been using my N73 for 2 years now. Have dropped it a few times, so it switched off every now and then, but it is a very good phone! Can do everything I wanted it to do, Remote mail, browsing, 3G, phone memory, card memory, great camera, not a bad battery life, 3 days or so, BT, carkit capability, etc.
 
I have the Nokia N78. I recommend it to anyone looking for a new phone. It's sexy and awesome (HSDPA, 3.2 Mpx camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon Flash, 2Gb memory, Symbian S60 V3 Feature Pack 2, Wifi, built-in GPS with voice-guided navigation, naviwheel (touch-sensitive scroll wheel), standard earphone jack, N-gage etc...)

Isn't the N78 a bit slow with responding, seeing it is running Symbian S60 3?
I have it on my N73 as well and mine is very laggy at times, as is some others I have spoken to about it. Apparently it is a well-known problem and of course it has always plagued the Symbian OS from previous versions.
Both are 3rd releases, unless the .2 makes a huge difference on the N78.

This was a concern for me when I checked out the 5800, but no, it is very responsive and of course running a much more recent Symbian OS, release 5.

Not in the least :) I had an N70 before I got this phone and the difference is massive. The N78 has instant response times.

The N78 does have better hardware than the N73 though, so I take it that that combined with the feature pack 2's fixes has resulted in it not being laggy.

My boet has an HTC for me for R3k, my current phone is an HTC and ... *meh*

Guess I'll have to see. I just think it's silly spending that amount on something where I won't be using all the features. I'd rather upgrade my pc (see applicable thread).
 
Im not really one for phones. I generally go to a pep/hypermarket/akermans and choose the cheapest nokia.

The phone I have is awesome and cost about R250. It is responsive, small, very easy to use, has 3/4 day battery life, is reliable and basically does everything I want it to.

However, its lack of email and browsing capabilities are a bit of a limiting factor, especially when you run a website.

So I am getting an iPhone. I just really liked the iPhone I tested a few months back.
 
So apparently contracts are the way to go at the moment ...

What's the deal with top-ups etc.? What do I choose?
