So i was just thinking, about gaming and about simulator sickness\game nausea.

Who here gets it and what have you done to prevent\cure it.

the last time I had it was when I played half life 2 (seems im only effected by FPS), since I pushed through the initial nausea and eventually stopped when I broke out into a cold sweat, it took 3 days for me to be back to normal.

had it a bit in skyrim as well, it seems to happen to me mostly when playing fps and getting lost, you know when you have been playing for a few hours and go into a room or area and your running around essentially in circles trying to find a way out or whatever, that annoying i just want to finish this or leave so im rushing around looking all over, I suppose the disorientation messes with my brain.

The single white dot included in Mirrors Edge was put in for the sole purpose of helping with this kind of Motion Sickness. U get it because your brain is getting signals from your eyes that is telling it you are moving but the fluid in your inner ear which helps you balance is sending your brain signals that you are not moving. Minor cases might make it through by focusing on the crossair, severe cases might need to find a new hobby.

I get it, a lot. There are only a few fps that I can play without feeling it and have noticed that while mainly the problem is with fps I discovered I got it with Batman AA as well.
What I think may be the problem is when changing screens too fast, as in going from looking at a lush forest then quickly moving the mouse upwards to look at the sky and back down.
Stopping doing that as much as possible is a small remedy to most titles. Also making sure the game runs smooth as silk helps a lot as well, any jerkyness where frames per second aren't high enough and constant causes it to heighten as well.

You can adjust the Field of View settings, change your distance from the monitor or play in third person view.

Most get it when playing FPS, If I take a break for a week or so and start again I get the same. Just work thru it and play.

I also only really got it with portals... my monkey brain was melting from the physics involved (or lack thereof).

What I found helps with fps games is to actually move with your body when playing... you know like you do when playing racing games with a controller on the couch? My Friends find it hilarious but it increases the immersion and helps with the inner ear issues.

Also don’t be so twitchy with your movements. I know they are necessary during pvp but when not pvping… just tone it down a notch and make your movements fluid and natural.

I got the whole world moving up after playing about 4 hours of Guitar Hero in PS2. c Later you kinda feel sick.....

FoV makes all the difference in the world, for me. Never got it until I played Darkness 2, which had a FoV of only 45.

I got this when I played League of Legends for the first time. It was probably a mix of the insanely bright colours and fast screens scrolling but yeah. I got it bad the first time

Ok, this is new for me. This is going to sound weird, but I have to try this. Not to sound inconsiderate or anything, but I really had no idea that people experience this from only a screen.

The closest to "physical" effects I've had from games is if I'm getting too involved in the game (Hitman and Mass Effect comes to mind) and overdo it a bit, and then go to sleep and my brain doesn't shut off. I then dream that I'm still playing the game (or sometimes that I'm in the game) and then simply don't wake up and I sleep for like 12 hours or longer.

My wife can't watch me play another without getting sick to her stomach. Consider yourself lucky.

I never get it, no matter what the game is doing (spinning, looping, low FOV) my brain seems to cope fairly well. Now playing a crappy game usually does make me want to puke...

Oh ya man watching anyone else play a fps almost instantly makes me want to blow chunks.

this was funny: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/11/3/

also the theory goes that your brain thinks you might be tripping balls because your poisoned due to the fact that your seeing things move but your not.

I just ordered portal I hope this doesn't kill me, i have found that if i look away from the screen every once in a while it helps

I haven't had any issues like this when playing games, but I know my sister-in-law does, so I am interested in any remedies or methods to cope.

This happens to me when I had a marathon session of any game. I once played through most of Doom 3 in a single day and had an interesting night's sleep.

I also get a similar effect when I am focused on something like work for the whole day. Commonly had it when I was working on the tills at Pick 'n Pay and it was the weekend after payday. I spent the whole day ringing items and when I took a nap when I got home I would dream I'm still working on the till. It was annoying as hell when it happened, since I didn't get much rest.

Same thing here but get it after playing most games, i.e Skyrim, Diablo, Modern Warfare, Battlefield, just to name a few...
