microATX maximum of 244 × 244 mm
Mini-ITX is 17 × 17 cm

Mini ATX is VERY uncommon as Mini-ATX motherboards were designed with MoDT (Mobile on Desktop Technology) which adapt mobile CPUs for lower power requirements and less heat generation, which is aimed at home theater PCs (HTPC), in-car PCs, or industrial use
 
What exactly can a Mini-ITX take?

Will a micro-ATX mobo not work inside a Mini ITX case?

didnt know that existed, seems to be a short lived dead standard kinda like ultra atx

Micro atx is bigger, and will not fit in a case that is made for mini-itx only.
Also mini-itx usually only have a limit of 4 sata ports and a single dual memory channel. It can usually take a normal sized Graphics card. And everything else is more or less the same. Obviously you get less USB ports and some other limitations due to the size and lack of space for all the technology.

I take it you get cubed m-ATX as well?

(Too lazy to research it myself)

Cube (Mini-ITX) is just small and "less" compatible.
Lack of DIMM slots might be the only drawback for me; one 8GB stick instead of my current 2x 4GBs.

Installing the components will be a tight fit, however.

I'm not quite sure that I am following you here. But just remember our size comparisons and if you are unsure, send the full details of what motherboard you have and what case you have and I or someone else on here can tell you whether it will fit or not. Same with graphics card.

I apologise, I'm typing and gaming. What's more - my fixation on ITX went too far since there is ATX form factor cube cases.

There's a case for any size motherboard out there. Just that not all of them allow for the motherboard to lie horizontal.
