Industry doesn't know what girl gamers want, says female developer

I think it very much depends on the girl gamer, I know some girls who really dig shooters, while others hate the violence. My girlfriend enjoys StarCraft, World of Warcraft, Max Payne, Heavy Rain and The Sims 3. Why don't they do a massive survey for girl gamers.

Perhaps it's a case that girls just dont know what they want :P /runs and hides :D

UPDATE: I asked my girlfriend what she enjoys about games and what makes them appealing and what she dislikes. Her answer was basically she does not like games that have the same repetitive action over and over, enjoys games that have a sense of adventure and must have choices that impact the gameplay or story and some clever puzzles.

What women want ?
Who knows ?!
Really.. Who knows ?!

Maybe the programming ladies should get cracking at writing games they want , sell it on steam to show a supporter base and perhaps other companies can go from there ?!

Tarryn , not to burst your bubble here but what your complaining about ,
is about there not being a genre for something that is yet to be invented.

Look at DOTA , one simple map and it spawned HON and LOL and DOTA2 and more to come.

Is there a gap in the market place ? Yes !
Am I a girly girl to know what you want ? No ! I cant even understand what my fiance wants half the time.

You ladies crack out the programming manuals and show us what you want.
Invent the "missing" genre.

You posted your article , so now im asking you now ,
Tarryn , what kind of game do you want ?
Tell us.

Whats with the attack on Tarryn, I don't see her complaining?

As I am one of those girl gamers out there, my 2c's:

At this point in time Im actually missing adventure games, i.e. Dreamfall, TLJ, The old school quest games. I do get some of that fix from newer stuff - ME was one of my favs and it did help. But I havent seen anything resembling the old school games in a while. I like my shooters every once in a while same as puzzle games. But I do get bored of the idea that girls only want games like the Sims, and popcap games. Altho I have nothing against those games, I do prefer mine with a bit of a puzzle to it. (and yes I do have a popcap addiction but its mostly due to boredom of the "skop, skiet en donner" games.)

I don't think it's a missing genre pre-se at least that isn't the main reason for the lack of female gamers. I think it has more to do with the attitude and tone of most games where things are still very much a macho affair in a man's world with male protagonists who have largely superficial relationships with women.

Uncharted 2 is a good example of how to do it right, apart from being an absolutely amazing game, it had strong, believable and integrated female characters who weren't just there for eye-candy. Of course for every Uncharted you have 10 gears of war or call of duties where you don't even see a female character.

It would be interesting to see stats on gender breakdowns because iirc female 'gamers' made up about 45% of the total market share for all games (casual/mobile/AAA/etc...) so ladies are playing games just maybe not that many AAA games. So maybe we are missing the gaming equivalent of a 'chick flick' but the only games I've seen that focus on the female gender have all been aimed at girls rather than women.

Where am I attacking ?
Im asking what kind of games she wants ?
I mean thats the reason she wrote the article , no games for the ladies out there ?
Im asking what kind of game she would like to play.

I can imagine that a lot of the industry might think, ok, a game for girls, lets make a My Little Ponies game, and have them run it on a pink console with sparkly bits on, that should do the trick.

Do they really cater for regular, actual gamer types, or should I say gamer women?

I wouldn't know what they want, being of the manly persuasion myself, but I imagine it's divided into the group who enjoys the same games as men tend to according to the article, like shooters and racing, etc, the group who likes RPG's or adventure games or MMO's, and the group that likes The Sims, or social Facebook type games like Farmville or whatever.

Come to think of it like that, maybe they do already cater for the girls. Would they really prefer something else? Are they that different than us guys? Maybe the ratio might differ in the taste in genre, but is there really something missing?

What do you think ladies?

I think it's going a bit far to expect a specific "type" of game for female gamers, or genre. Game developers are comprised of a big variety of employee's both male and female. Just look at the Uncharted franchise by Naughty Dog, the creative director Amy Hennig plays a vital role in shaping the Uncharted franchise, and at the end of the day it's people with a passion for games that make them and play them, be that any gender or race. Today's games are made for a broad audience and I don't see why any female wouldn't LOVE to play the games that are on the shelves today.

Shouldn't a good game appeal to all gamers? Therefore the need to cater for a specific gender goes away?

Both my sisters are gamers, As it stands my younger sister likes playing games like Sacred and Diablo, My older sister likes playing games like MW2 and FEAR3. It stands to reason but I think most if not all games are made for...GAMERS...You're sex doesn't come into it and it shouldn't have too.

The voice of reason has entered the thread. You have a moerse valid point. My GF likes LittleBigPlanet and Afro Samurai, while I know another girl who likes Resident Evil, The Sims and Tekken. It's really not a gender thing. Girls either like it, or they don't. Same as guys. You get okes who like shooters and others who like RTS games. Just a matter of preference, I reckon.

Absolutely, as I said earlier, in my humble opinion, the ratio of tastes in different genre's may differ between men and women, but I think in general, there's probably already a game out that you would enjoy regardless of gender. There are so many kinds of games out, I'm sure there's already something for everyone. What's left to be made really?

Developers surely have women in their teams working on games as well? I'm pretty sure they have an input? Just saying.

* please note at no point this is an attack, just bit confused *

Well this is kinda confusing I thought we were not suppose to label gamers into two different sexist groups as from what I remember reading one of her replies. Here we have an article about girl gamers.

Shouldn't be games for gamers and not just a group within them ?

/reread, maybe I've lost the plot *shrugs*

What I thought was said before. Anyways my partner plays rpg/fps or what ever appeals her fancy and not because they are "girl" or "guy" games...

Yup. A game for every taste. Chicks dig games, guys dig games. Some games appeal to one person, while the same game completely disgusts another.

What's left to be made? Ummmmm...you've got me there...

I think you think about it too much. In a philosophical overdrive kind of way :D

My wife doesn't care for games where you shoot things. She loves games with a good story and characters that you can relate to and come to grow fond of.

When we go look for games to buy for her, well there's almost nothing. Most games require violence and the ones that don't are puzzles. In fact, if I had to make a game for her now it would be a roleplaying where there's no fighting. Think more along the lines of the dialogue of Mass Effect, plus a lot of places and things to discover. And um...

Women are difficult.
