Karma system incoming!

Minus rep for not knowing.

/reports Mega's post :D

So you approve or disapprove someone's post, make a comment and you guys moderate it, right?

Lol I know the concept was wondering if there are any particulars.

Im going to end up with bad karma i can just feel it.

I'm a member of reddit and karma is good and bad. On the one hand, it's good as it allows the best posts to be displayed and go to the top, and the bad/spammy posts to go to the bottom. The current system allows for equality for all, however spammers can easily do their job and pollute our forums. The one other issue I sometimes have is with how the community feels towards and issue, eg piracy. Most of you are against piracy, but say someone were to post a rational discussion of why they are for it, they could be voted down into oblivion even though they have a valid opinion. I know most of you are going to say "Oh, but I would never do that if he has a valid opinion!" Well yes, you wouldn't - but validity would be subjective.

I lean towards the "no" for karma argument. I've seen it's casualties and heroes and if someone goes against the hivemind..it's horrible.

Of course, this is post karma, where an individual post's karma determines its position in the thread and visibility. If we talk about user karma, that's a bit better as the posts still remain, but you can see what the community think of poster X, while poster X's posts are still visible to like minded, lurking people.

Just some thoughts based on my experience with karma.

EDIT: I forgot to mention karma "wars" where people would just blast a person's karma negatively or positively and the mods had to put a stop to it. They kept the system, but now only a mod was able to change it. Karma was therefore reserved for exceptional posts - exceptionally good or bad and the karma the user received would be based on said post, one point per exceptional post.

LOL, yes you can :P

Yeah, I wouldn't go into a karma war, but sometimes it may seem that way if the community just really doesn't like a person :/

You're right in that the idea probably has its weaknesses (I can picture myself getting negative karma for a particular post of mine right now, actually :p ) - I'm not entirely too fussed about it - all the same I try not to step on too many toes.

Personally, I'm more likely to give someone some good karma for an epic post, than pull negative karma on someone for bringing the forum's rage on himself. If I'm feeling particularly anal though, I might strike for super-bad spelling and grammar >:D

... just kidding ...

All the same - if Tinnie is bringing in the karma system, there must be some sort of reasoning behind it? Or is it just a random addition to add something extra to the forum. Be great to hear Tinnie's thoughts on it.

Would be better if each post had an up & down arrow. The dialog box that opens is a tad tedious.

Also, I've seen the rep system backfire on quite a few forums. New users get nuked to rep oblivion if a long term user downvotes them for whatever reason. i.e. its near impossible to balance it right even if you've got a mellow crowd.

The karma does tend to make people behave - after all you don't want to look like you have so much negative karma the you are hated by the community, but...

I also want Tinnie's thought's on this!
