Leadtek GTX560Ti Heat problem

So lately, with all the heat we have been having, I have noticed a problem. My GFX card gets pretty hot (around 80-90degrees) and the fan speed does not go up to more than about 45% (This is under load)

I have worked around the problem by downloading the nvidia performance tool and setting profiles to make the fan spin faster at higher temperatures and that seems to work quite well. The card then starts to stabalise at about 65degrees under load with a fan speed of about 60%. I am worried that this could potentially reduce the life span of said fan.

Is this normal for Leadtek cards to not speed the fans up fast enough to actually compensate for the heat? Also the card sits at about 40degrees under normal windows usage.

The Leadtek card in question is this one:

Not sure about the card, but maybe you'd like to disclose what chassis you have and what other cooling you have set up on your system? A couple of well placed chassis fans can make all the difference.

Does the fan on the gpu make any unusual sound effects when spinning, have you checked for dust. If you have a desk fan try placing it next to the pc so that cool air can blow onto it. How long have you had the gpu, is it still under warranty.
To me it sounds like a faulty fan.

AFAIK, GPUs do run under higher temps than say, CPUs, so 65 degrees may be quite 'average'?

I use MSI afterburner to manage the temperatures. I found that with the stock fan settings, my graphics card would often heat up to around 80+ degrees. With MSI Afterburner fan controls set it usually reaches around 73 degrees on a hot day.

Sounds like the temperatures of that card are fine.

The fans spin up quite well once I have used the nvidia profiles to manually set fan speeds once it reaches certain temps. I'm fine with it running at 65degrees like this under load and the fan doesn't make any odd sounds and works wonderful under manual settigns.

My main worry is whether I am reducing my fan life like this.

It's when I leave the card on factory fan settings that the fan won't spin up faster than about 45% and that's what worries me.

Is it normal? Should I go through the effort of sending the card in? It's only a few months old and still under warranty.

Perhaps for the card, 65 degrees does not require the fan to spin faster, so it doesn't. If the GPU gets to say 90 degrees, does the fan spin faster?

No, the temps gets to about 90 degrees and stays at about 45% fan speed. This is on defaults. But when I manually configure profiles, then the fan can spin up that fast. So the fan is capable of the speeds and to cool the card down. It's only when I leave it at factory standards that the fan won't speed up to cool down the GPU and then the temps skyrocket. It's a pain really.

Mmmm Install MSI Afterburner and monitor you're temps through there.
The fans not spinning up when it gets to 90c is not right, might be something silly but could also be that the card needs to be swapped out.

90c is within safe temps but still way to high for a 560ti, As far as I know they are set to switch off at 103c.

using gpu-z, the asus 560 ti TOP cu ii (few other swear words) is 40-60, 60 being average load ingame.

Yeah but that's a beautiful cooler you have there bud :D
Its a great card.

As far as I know Leadtek uses the normal reference cooler and they aren't that great. No excuse for the fan not spinning up to at least 80% when the card is running at 90c. So something is def not right.

After gigabyte 8800 gt and his480, well proper cooling is a must ;)

Shame that leadtek seems to gone meh having had my gefore 2 ultra from them and that thing just lasted and without any issues. I have heard from 1x person already before this thread to stay away from leadtek due to cooling issues, seems that was true.

Yeah I have only ever owned one Leadtek card and funny enough it lasted me 2 years. Still bought it from Zaps many years ago xD Since then I haven't owned a Leadtek card. I only stick to Sapphire, Asus and XFX, not a huge fan of Gigabyte xD

Yeah, I have temp monitoring software. And as I said, the nVidia performance tools let me configure profiles which let me keep my card at about 65 degrees under load. But it's a real hassle. I will try MSI AB and see if it's easier to use (and not as temperamental)

I quite like the look of the gigabyte Windforce cards. But when I upgraded they were out of stock of the Gigabyte 560Ti's. So went with Leadtek as I have had one before (a 4800Ti back in the day) and it worked like a dream. Maybe I will take it in just to have a look at. It could be a faulty component somewhere. That, or leadtek heat issues are really true.

Pitty, I always held Leadtek in high regard.

Just up the fan speed. Ive run ALL my previous cards at 80-100% in game and would put them on 50% after wards, Never had a problem .. In fact my mom uses my OLD amd 64 rig for her "old docs " pc and my 6800Ultra is STILL running . LEadtek ofcourse :D

You know Tom's hardware have been doing some interesting test on doing a small custom cooling mod for graphics cards. In other words they just removed the normal fans and added larger fans.

Here's basically what they came up with:

For one thing the speed of the fans can't be changed anymore, HOWEVER they found that even running at 2000rpm the larger fans are still quieter then the stock fans and they actually cool way better. This is really interesting, although your system will end up looking like a makeshift crap PC. Which no-one wants. I'm going to test their theories on my old build and see what I come up with.

or you just buy a aftermarket cooler ? accelero 2 or vf 3000 zalman type coolers?

The problem with aftermarket coolers (and please correct me if I am wrong) is that if you remove the factory fitted units and replace with different coolers etc, you lose your warranty. I believe?
