led/lcd tv?

But the D5500 is not true 100hz, it's "fixed in software" or something like that. Apparently only 6 series is actual 100hz *shrugs*. Price isn't too much of an issue it's literally then 2 week wait or less than I could pickup a 8-9k lcd.

If it is a fixed in software then they did a fantastic job with it, could hardly tell the difference at hirsch when I was there. I would wait a few weeks if I was you.

Maybe the it's not so bad option over true 100hz. as Mec said enough times by now, just go and see :o

Thanks the input, but now I have led/lcd/plasma overload

LCD/LED don't get burnt in. Not sure I want to spent that amount on something that can get burnt in even if that's a remote chance.

Plasma's nowadays are also "free from" burnin (that was plasmas 5 year ago). I have a 32" Samsung la32c530 and I love it (even SD DSTV looks fine)... But this is a 2 year old model. Also agree to always check it out in the shop (preferable with a 8GB HD mkv file on a memory stick)....

If they don't want to allow you to try out the set, WALK away...

Cool, I see there is at least decent legit 1080p demo clips to download :p

I always thought plasma was the older technology ;)

Led usually have more consistant reproduction of colour across the whole scree.

Lcd versus plasma, plasma usually has very high refresh rates and low response times, and have better contrast (whiter whites and darker blacks)plasmas do suffer from ghosting and images burning in however.

Ghosting is when a scene changes and the old image stays for a short time afterwards.

Lcds are lighter, cooler, dont have ghosting or burn and are more vivid. There are many types of panels though such as IPS and TN. TN are way inferior to plasmas in terms of viewing angle but have fast response times.

Brands that are good in the lcd market (samsung) are not good in the plasma market.

Ghosting and burn-in are things of the past, especially with newer plasma technology. I also disagree with "Brands that are good in the lcd market (samsung) are not good in the plasma market." Samsung makes top of the range equipment. I love my plasma and would happily buy another over LCD any day.

seen a lot of comments here, i disagree with mercurial saying samsung is not good in the plasma market. I have a samsung plasma 51d550 and it is a fantastic plasma. the LG does not compare with it or any in the store that i purchased it from. for the same size/quality i get from my plasma you will need to pay around double to triple to get the same quality lcd/led. the d550 is also great because there is a little hack to change it into a d7000 series with the 10point colour calibration being unlocked. it makes a big difference although it also has its draw backs.

I play games on my plasma and have NEVER had burn in yet (Played fifa 12 for 10 hours straight and had a little IR which i watched one full HD 1080p movie and it was gone).

Plasma is not going to improve further in my opinion but for the price of the plasma it is much better than an lcd/led of the same price. I think my plasma will eventually land up being my lounge TV and when i do have 20 - 30k to spend on an led then i will have an awesome gaming tv.

EDIT: one thing about the plasma is obviously it uses more electricity than the lcd/led although the newer ones use half the amount of the older plasma's.

What? I did not say Samsung is not good in the plasma market. What are you talking about? I've been promoting Samsung plasma in this whole thread. Please re-read my comments  I said I disagreed with the previous poster when he said Samsung are not good in the plasma market (see the italics in my previous post).

Your post about plasma using more power is another myth. That may have been true in the past but this is no longer true. My Samsung plasma uses the same amount of power as a conventional LCD.

Plasma has advanced in leaps and bounds since inception, but an average LCD will outperform a high end Plasma any day.

"next level" technology is OLED and laser :D

Right now the touch screen and smart tv segments are picking up.

I said nice things about plasmas too. But the ghosting and burn is masked not removed.

I have seen lots of panels and samsung are not great in the plasma market. Definitely average. And in the led-lcd market they are better.

I am not comparing them to LG and Sony though. Looking at all the manufacturers like pioneer, toshiba, NEC, etc as well.

One thing I have noticed is shops have their screens setup in order to sell you an item. They purposefully degrade some of their displays in order to upsell other ones.

So it helps to find a retailer or specialist shop that you trust.

I'm intriuged. In what way is my statement incorrect?
Because I've done extensive research, so I have a good idea. I think it's fair to say that a high-end LCD will outperform a plasma, but not an average LCD. Plasma just plays everything better and as I've said, I have yet to experience any burn-in or ghosting.

The main issue back when was that lcd's were limited to 32"

These days they can go bigger but they still cost more per inch.

They both have drawbacks and over the years they have converged a lot.

Go look at some side by side with the same source and price range. Just br wary of sales tricks when you are looking at them.

Yeah, that's what I always advise people to do and you make a very valid point - beware of sales pitches. I do believe they purposely fine tune certain sets to look more appealing and others more appalling. Be very careful. Head over to mybroadband. There is an extensive section on TVs and advise from those who know.

sorry m8 meant that at darthSWNT , got names mixed up:p...

Interesting to know the power consumption is roughly similar considering the specs on the samsung website shows otherwise.
Power Consumption (Max): 350 Watts (51d550 plasma)
Power Consumption (Max.) : 180 Watts (40d550 lcd), i think the 46d550 lcd uses 210W.

although i could believe that it uses roughly similar because that is the (Max) consumption.

No worries.

I guess it depends on the model. My Samsung plasma uses 200W. Also keep in mind the sizes of the TV. Bigger sizes will use more power.

...why not lg led tv? Went out to look at 100hz plus ones, not bad, but geez some shop's pricing are crazy to say least.

I'd suggest to wait until end of Jan or Feb. Normally shops have mini-sales to get rid of excess stock purchased for the Christmas rush
