Look what I'm getting for my birthday

Well, the standard ones are, I'm getting the empty box and putting in 4X 5900RPM 2Tb drives... cutting off about a third of the cost

Just a question: Why do you need this when you could just buy a cheapish PC and add 4x 2TB drives to it for that price? It is for home use right?

Just plain mass storage... it has a lower power footprint than a standard PC, no need for an OS... less parts to break down and its optimised for sharing over my Wi-Fi network... streaming to PS3, Xbox 360, laptop and hopefully tablet

Ah, those BlackArmor NAS's are awesome. I got one of the 220's (baby brother of the 440) for my wife's work, and they work great. They also work as a Media server, and FTP server, and if you don't have a static IP, Seagate has a service you can sign up to, where you can access your files over the net. And you can create different users to different shares, so ex give a client web access to a specific share on your device.

Very cool

Oh okay. I would have done it the PC way. There is a lot more things you can do with a PC than that. But if it works for you i hope you enjoy it! BTW happy birthday.

It looks wicked. The guys at work have something similar and they go to town using it to share files over the net. Me? I use drop box lol. but 4 Gbs compared to 8TBS is another story.

I use dropbox as well... but more for menial things like word docs and pictures... this will be for some serious HD Movies and Series :)

That's for sure HD movies - such nice quality... such a heavy space cost. Enjoy it Green, I must say it looks good.

Thanks guys... Its gonna be sitting in my study next to the Router so space isn't the issue really. Might be changing to an HP version, will let you all know what I choose and will send picks and what not

You could just build yourself another PC if you have parts laying around. The most expensive bits would be the hard drives themselves. Can run FreeNAS off a USB flashdrive.. What I'm doing at the moment. No need for graphic card, monitor, keyboard etc.
