Massive video game price shake-up in South Africa

Seems that historically the pricing was not right, it makes sense that digital distribution should be cheaper as there is no physical media which saves both distribution and storage costs.

Yes the only reason the price was the dam was because of bullying by the brick&mortar stores as they were still the biggest market. Seems the penny is dropping, hopefully.

No reason why digital user should pay the same price as the inferior service.

A R70 difference in price isn't much to go on about between digital version and physical editions.

One other aspect wrt digital version is that not everyone has uncapped internet here in SA as games range from 20GB to 50GB per game.

WTF does uncapped internet have to do with the sizes of downloads? Yes if you made poor life choices and went with Telkom as your ISP and got a whopping 20GB of data then you have a reason to gripe. I pay for my 200GB capped account and I have no issues downloading 50GB behemoths when the need arises.

What does bloody irk me is when retail stores try to paw off a 3+ year title for the same price it was on the day of release

These days, odds are that you're going to be downloading it, whether you buy the physical version or not.

yep, just think about "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain" where the "Retail boxed copy" version basically contained a key and a disk with the Steam Installer on, nothing else.

Aaah! Ok, I think I misunderstood when I read your statement until PsychoFish replied. I game on console 90% of the time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, didn't steam go through legal troubles forcing them to price new games the same as retail?

IIRC it had to do with currency conversions that were off between regions, they have since introduced the regional pricing scheme.

I'm still baffled as to how digital games can still be sold anywhere close to retail counterparts. None of the major overheads, so they should be massively discounted versus physical

It's all about the green

if you pay over R600 for a new game you are nuts. Even if you can afford it you are quite stupid. It simply is not worth that much and the depreciation rate of software is enough to tell you so.

People who actually buy the games at the increased prices are the sole reason that the prices increase in the first place.
