MMO for a newblet

Raven Gold

Local Boy Hunter
Ok so I'm a newblet in the MMORPG world and I don't know what the hell is going on in that department.

Heres where you come in. I'm looking for a good, non-subscription MMO that somebody like me can get into. I want your advice please.

Guild Wars.

Sorry for the short answer, but I'm on my way into the Transkei now ... and ... well it's friggen 5am!

But yeah. guild wars. I'll let the others fill in the details.

guild wars because of a few reasons.

it's buy now then free to play.

massive amounts of missions to do per campaign

there's a overall narrative to follow for main story missions

pvp is massive (if you are into that sort of thing)

class combo's are awesome.

plus it still looks good without killing your pc

RoseZA.

It's totally free, there are some items that you may wanna buy - but they don't help you that much

It's local

It has an active development team working on it, so it's constantly improving

The graphics are pretty good.

The community is awesome, they will really help you to learn, etc.

There is also WOKF (World of KungFu) Free to play but you buy gold if you really have to for the Trade Store

Dungeons & Dragons online.

Looks awesome, Free to play, you have the option to buy gold for certain "upgrades". Overall lots of fun.

I'm biased, but Guild Wars.

It was my first true MMO experience, and 4 years down the line I'm still in love with it :) It's especially great as an introductory MMO as, as the developers would put it, it's "easy to learn, but difficult to master." You can pick up the Complete Collection for R400 these days (at least the last time I checked), which will get you the three campaigns and the expansion. That's a steal.

Add to that the fact that you'll be able to make some nice progress in Guild Wars 1 by the time Guild Wars 2 hits, and it's a no brainer really :D

GW is not a true mmo ;)

Raven. depends on your preference imho and what your rig can run. for example AoC is awesome, but engine is kak.

wow is great, but might be bit dated. though i enjoy it now after a very long break.

everquest II. now that is a freaking awesome game.

guildwars. fun, but only if you group though. factions has awesome eastern themes.

dnd. wesome, but same as gw, better if you group.

eve. if you want to kill yourself :D

rozeSA. not yet rated- though it looks like fun and total free.

aion. bit like wow with angels and more grinding ;).

Requiem: Memento Mori. free 2 play, different, but it's looks and mechanics might be a killer for some.

Runes of Magic was fun while it lasted. It's polished for a F2P MMO, but that doesn't mean it's at the level of P2P MMO's at all. There's still some annoying translation funnies, text not fitting windows properly and other such "bugs."

a good, non-subscription MMO
Tempted to say mutually exclusive, but actually you have options.

Dungeons and Dragons Online
Guild Wars
Allods Online
Warhammer Online has a free, non time-limited trial offer (only first 10 levels)

Just note that 'free' MMOs are rarely ever really free. Most hit a wall where to progress you have to fork out for microtrans to buy XP pots or something, and sometimes that can work to be more expensive than a subscription. They actually punish you for liking them, which is a bit meh imo.

WoW is still, I feel, the easiest MMO to get into. Very gentle learning curve, and as typical of Blizzard games easy to learn, hard to master.
I can give you a 14 day free trial online if you get the client software from someone (it's a bit much to download).

Well I don't wanna pay monthly charges, I don't have the credit card for it. So something I can just buy once and than I can play how ever long I like is the only option for me.

D&D online I tried a while ago, but lost the files and don't feel like wasting another 2 weeks trying to download it again.

But Guild Wars seems to be best option and I'll try it out.
