Most Memorable Moments in Games

I was reminiscing over one of my favourite childhood games earlier today, Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday, and was remembering one of its early missions in particular where you board an abandoned spaceship and find that all is not what it seems. This got me thinking, for me the mission aboard the abandoned spaceship is a part of a game that has stuck with me and stood out as a truly memorable experience, so I thought I'd ask:

What level or section of a game is most memorable for you? Describe the game and the section/level and say why it stuck in your mind as memorable?

Here are 2 of mine:

Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday: (Essentially a sci-fi, TBS based on D&D rules)
In the 2nd mission/section of the game you board an abandoned vessel. As you start exploring the alarms go off and the red emergency lighting kicks in, setting the mood. In the game you have a small first-person view that you move around and explore in and descriptions and storyline are given in the box below (for longer segments of story there was a physical log book that came with the came with numbered sections that you referred to when prompted). There are recordings and logs that you find that detail the story of the crew in bits and pieces - essentially they contract some virus which embeds itself in your brain. This actually starts to happen to your own party and over time he infected behave erratically and eventually collapse unconscious. If untreated the infected eventually wake up insane and attack your party and you have to kill them (perma-death essentially for that party member).
The only solution is to gather enough info regarding a cure, find the med-bay and get someone who has sufficient stats to operate the brain surgery. If you manage to do this you will make it out alive with a complete party. All the while you are fighting off mutant creatures aboard the ship. (A quick glance at wikipedia reminded me off the ship AI that helps you, the argon gas have to put into the ventilation to kill of the mutants, and the rush to stop the self-destruct sequence at the end!)

The difficulty and atmosphere of this level has really stuck with me and I remember my immense satisfaction when I finally got it all right and made it out alive with my party intact. It was amazing how a 1990 game could use so many elements to create such immersion in the game.

Spec Ops: The Line
This is regarding one of the games endings, so...
Spoiler: show
There is an where you send out an SOS message and the American troops arrive to pick you up but you still get to choose if you lower your weapon or start shooting like crazy. I tried out both options, but depressingly enough I found the ending where you gun down your rescuers to be incredibly poignant. You kinda role-play that you have completely cracked and are unable to trust anyone in an American uniform. For me this was most suitable ending to the sad story.

I grew up gaming and riding motorcycles. So most of my childhood memories consist of those 2.
So memories concerning games are in abundance to me!

I used to play music very loudly while i play online games. (I mostly played online games as I am a very competitive person)
So I have lots of music linked to certain games especially WoW.
For example I was crazy about System of a Down and still am. Every time I hear a System song I think of the time when I leveled my Troll Warrior with my friends in school in Stranglethorn Vale, before it was tarnished by the Burning Crusade.

When i Hear a Linkin Park song it takes me back to my days when CSS just came out, and I started my own clan .:Saints:., which I saw is still alive to this day. So I have a strong link between games and music and enjoying it with friends

Half-Life 2, the final act. Played it very late at night many years ago, but the experience was so unforgettable.

I have a few wonderful memories, but there is one childhood memory that sticks:

It was a Sunday afternoon and, I went home for the weekend (stayed in hostel) and my younger brother was also home. We decided to play Star Reach split screen - learning as we go. It was an epic battle for planets and a real nail biter. There is something about sitting next to one another and playing a good game. We decided to play a best out of 3, but the Sunday went so quickly and I had to get back to the hostel. That was one Sunday I didn't want to end. It was just so much fun. We never played Star Reach again - I moved to Joburg after school and he stays in the UK for almost 7 years - more into music and outgrown games:

Red Dead Redemption, the first time you ride into mexico and the music plays. Made me feel like a real cowboy.

Off the top of my head, I'll say; the entire journey of The Last of Us.

I agree the whole game was ABSOLUTELY FUCKING AMAZING, but I'd say the opening and the first encounter with infected(the part in the fallen over building) stands out.

Hmm let's see.. in no particular order:

The ending of season 1 of Telltale's The Walking Dead.
Finishing ICO on the PS2.
That theme park segment from FF7 on the ps1 especially racing the chocobo.
Encountering Sydney in Vagrant Story.
Finishing HL2.
Playing SSB/Mario Kart 64/Pokemon minigames/Mario party on an n64 emulator for hours at my friend's house.
MGS4 visiting Boss' grave.
Definitely Chrono Trigger.
Gran Turismo 2 endurance races.
That stealth mission from COD4.
Killing those lines of Elvis impersonators in GTA2

All I can think of at this moment.

A few that come to mind:

The dog crashing through the window in the original Resident Evil.
The T-Rex encounter in the original Tomb Raider.
The T-Rex encounter in Dino Crisis.
Pretty much all of Fear Effect.
Psycho Mantis boss fight in Metal Gear Solid.
Nude Raiden segment of MGS2.
Chopping off Ethan's finger in Heavy Rain.
The giraffes moment in The Last of Us.
The ending of episode 3 in Life is Strange.

Reminds of that moment in Silent Hill on the ps1 where you're in a bar and that bird crashes through the window. That made me shit my pants! Superb sound design in that game.

Also remember Dino crisis lol. My mind was blown by the fact that you had to collect gun parts to assemble and modify your gun. I remember that custom Glock handgun from dino crisis especially.

Yep. I remember that part from TLOU.

Hey Solitude my old thread got necro'd and now people are posting more responses. Does this count as my Brute Force contribution for the week? :p

Spoiler: show
Kidding... I'll think of something by Sunday

Not a definitive list. Mostly newer titles.

The Witcher
  • The decision with Abigail at the end of Act 1. Who is the lesser, and greater evil? It's also where the game picks up. At this point, you either love it or you hate it.
  • Running through the fields of Murky Waters in Act 4, and later on that quest with Dandelion. Even though the game looks quite dated, that area is still fantastic and oozes atmosphere.
  • The Tavern themes.

The Witcher 2

The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone
  • Olgierd
    - Or perhaps the Oferi dauphin ate something that disagreed with him. You never know with their cuisine.
-- Never heard of food that turns men into monsters.
    - Then perhaps it was something he drank.
  • The Spoon Scene. Actually Gaunter O'Dimm in general. Such a great character.
  • The wedding. Perfectly written dialogue.

Mass Effect
  • Reaching the Citadel for the first time.
  • Speaking with an Elcor.
  • The scene with Sovereign. Sigh, what could have been.

Assassin's Creed II
  • The opening credits scene in Florence.
  • Getting a second hidden blade. That animation never got old.

LEGO Star Wars
Star Wars, and Lego. Blew my mind, and is still one of the better games in the series. I preferred the silent miming over the voiced dialogue from the later entries.

The Sims 1 (I'm not afraid to admit it).
Becoming the town serial killer, letting the entire population die in my pool. Single Bachelor for life.

Warcraft 3
One of the custom maps, can't remember the name. One player would be the hellbeast, and you have to kill the others in a small confined circular area. It was great fun, I think I spent at least 5 years in the early 2000's playing a bunch of custom maps on local servers.

TLotR: Return of the King
One of my guilty pleasure games. It's not even that great, but I played that game so many times. They don't make them like that anymore.

Star Wars: KotOR II
A Star Wars game where the Light Side wasn't always good, and the Dark Side wasn't moustache twirling evil. The conversations with Kreia are a stand-out.

Divinity: Original Sin

  • Lets see...Halibut, sheep cheese, tomatoes (they shoudn't have changed the voice actor for the EE).
  • The combat is fantastic. Tactition mode in the EE is the way to go.

I remember that game. It was called Hungry Fellhounds. And yes, it was kak funny when playing it with others haha. The mindgames, the tension, the to and fro of that fellhound chasing you :p I miss it so much...

Speaking of War3 custom games. One of my memorable gaming moments was hearing that ending credits song, while in the throes of an intense game albeit a custom game...

Warlocks was fun too...
Russian roulette was so much fun
Tropical Troll Tribes
Life of a peasant
Pokemon Defense
Uthers party

So much awesomeness during those days...

Just Google'd it. Yup, that's it! Aww yeah! So many good times. None of my IRL friends liked that map, so I always had to play it with people on Battlenet (or whatever the local version was called, I can't remember). Hungry Hungry Fellhounds, that one's going into the memory palace. :p

Tropical Troll Tribes, and Uther's Party were great as well! I didn't play the others. There was another one, I think it had something to do with vampires. It was similar to Skirmish, where you would build your base, but then one player was super powerful, and at night he would attack you, or something like that.
