depends on what is running in windows.

I am using 1gigs already for windows and games can use up to 900 so I get crashes a lot. Really need to get 4gigs that's compatible with my motherboard.

more like 4, i know stalker2 wanted 3 gb of ram
 
Yeah, I can't turn textures on high in GTA IV with only 2GB of RAM. However I can run Crysis on max without any stutter, so it really depends on the game. I play most games nearly maxed out without any issues.
 
OP: i cant really vouch GTA4 being a benchmark. sure it is resource hungry but from what i understand that's due to a sloppy port?

Problem is once you go above 2gb you head into the murky world of how much ram can XP actually use......

and I really don't want to purchase and install Windows 7.

I ran XP for a long time - noticed a difference in speed going from 2-3gb, then from 3-4gb, even on a 32-bit system. Most noticeable was the lag in closing or starting up a game for instance. And framerates improved as well.

It's funny though, since Win XP (stock install) shouldn't be capable of handling more than 2GB of RAM. With some tweaking you can get it up to 3GB - but that's the max it can handle, or use, as far as I know.

battlefield 3 on gets my vote ..
damn thing drains my pc like a vampire :( l cant even play it properly with everything on low , but ok , i guess my pc is old :S
