Read your earlier post, and I have this to say on it:
Thats a pitty. I would hope you didnt. Lets face it, there are several factors which make it lame and innapropriate.
1. Its big, takes up alot of space on the roads. You cant see round them
2. Gas Guzzler, uses way to much petrol which is a scarce resource on our planet.
3. Destroys the environment. These contribute to global warming on a massive scale compared to normal cars
4. Arrogance. People who drive them, often see themselves as superior and arrogance may be shown
5. Unsafe. Unsafe for everyone else. Not that hard to destroy in a crash. Its made of the same material
6. Taxes. Will soon be enforced on drivers or large vehicles. Like in the UK
7. Frowned at. More and more people will start frowning and dissagreeing with this as a car.
Hope this helps change your mind somewhat. Please we can do with fewer of them on our roads.
1. Same goes for trucks. SA's primary form of haulage (by tonnage) is through trucking.
2. My BMW uses 14l/100km. It's also a gas guzzler. This point applies to most vehicles out there. Silly point.
3. Highly debatable. Compare the volume of SUV/Bakkies with regular sedans. Even though SUVs/Bakkies emit higher levels of CO2, there are far fewer of them on the road than regular sedans.
4. *shrug* People in Sedans/Taxis/Buses/Trucks also display arrogance on the roads. It's not about the car they're driving, it's about their attitude. Don't blame the car for the person in the driver's seat being an asshole.
5. First really valid point. Most SUVs/Bakkies are not nearly as safe as sedans, mainly because SUVs/Bakkies are not required to go for safety testing (i.e. Euro NCAP).
6. Actually the taxes are being enforced on vehicles that emit certain amounts of CO2. Sure, that means that SUVs/Bakkies will be more heavily taxed, but then so will buyers of powerful sedans.
7. International sales trends would appear to disagree with this.
Ultimately it's a moot argument though. There are many compelling reasons for owning a 4X4, and as long as there are, people will continue to buy them. Personally, my family owns a Toyota Prado, and it's been a really worthwhile purchase. Lets us go lots of places we wouldn't be able to otherwise, thanks to the terrain...
