New Intel i7 980X Extreme Edition - Oh Yeah - I'm excited.

Absolutely. Some people do see it as being a snob. But same here, I do genuinly feel happy for someone who has something that they really like. I am a very fair person I am also not greedy. But some do view it as bragging and get jealous. Some even try and sabotage your stuff (rare) but it happens. If I see someone with a SUV, I say boo, not because I drive a smaller car and less expensive (I dont drive at all BTW), but because its shite for the environment. People just see you as being jealous. Its farking annoying.

If I have something others don't have I wouldn't want to rub it in their faces. As you say

Eeeek. Maybe I shouldn't mention that my next car is going to be a 4x4 Hilux Bakkie :) *gonna be a sad day for me to say goodbye to my baby...but...it needs to be done*

Oooh. Lol. But do you need it? is it one of those double cab Hilux's?

Yip. Double Cab 4x4 Hilux. We would really like one to join my in-law's on holidays etc. Not to mention that having a bigger car these days gives you a bit more security. I've been in too many situations lately where people are aggro when you're in a smaller car and take chances. No way of that happening when I'm in a 4x4 Hilux!

Buy a hummer :p

Even the taxis will respect you in that monstrosity...

Thats a pitty. I would hope you didnt. Lets face it, there are several factors which make it lame and innapropriate.

1. Its big, takes up alot of space on the roads. You cant see round them
2. Gas Guzzler, uses way to much petrol which is a scarce resource on our planet.
3. Destroys the environment. These contribute to global warming on a massive scale compared to normal cars
4. Arrogance. People who drive them, often see themselves as superior and arrogance may be shown
5. Unsafe. Unsafe for everyone else. Not that hard to destroy in a crash. Its made of the same material
6. Taxes. Will soon be enforced on drivers or large vehicles. Like in the UK
7. Frowned at. More and more people will start frowning and dissagreeing with this as a car.

Hope this helps change your mind somewhat. Please we can do with fewer of them on our roads.

I fail to see who this applies to?

Seriously.

Read your earlier post, and I have this to say on it:

1. Same goes for trucks. SA's primary form of haulage (by tonnage) is through trucking.
2. My BMW uses 14l/100km. It's also a gas guzzler. This point applies to most vehicles out there. Silly point.
3. Highly debatable. Compare the volume of SUV/Bakkies with regular sedans. Even though SUVs/Bakkies emit higher levels of CO2, there are far fewer of them on the road than regular sedans.
4. *shrug* People in Sedans/Taxis/Buses/Trucks also display arrogance on the roads. It's not about the car they're driving, it's about their attitude. Don't blame the car for the person in the driver's seat being an asshole.
5. First really valid point. Most SUVs/Bakkies are not nearly as safe as sedans, mainly because SUVs/Bakkies are not required to go for safety testing (i.e. Euro NCAP).
6. Actually the taxes are being enforced on vehicles that emit certain amounts of CO2. Sure, that means that SUVs/Bakkies will be more heavily taxed, but then so will buyers of powerful sedans.
7. International sales trends would appear to disagree with this.

Ultimately it's a moot argument though. There are many compelling reasons for owning a 4X4, and as long as there are, people will continue to buy them. Personally, my family owns a Toyota Prado, and it's been a really worthwhile purchase. Lets us go lots of places we wouldn't be able to otherwise, thanks to the terrain...

Well I was involved in a very nasty road rage experience a few weeks ago where we were blessed enough to get away from *just*. My fiance was with me in the car at the time and it was totally unprovoked. If I was in a Hilux, the incident would NOT have happened I promise you.

The roads we have today also don't care for nice cars. My first choice for my next car is an Audi S3, but road conditions and driving conditions by other drivers are forcing me to buy a car that is capable of driving over potholes AND moron trouble-seeking drivers.

As for pollution, it has been proven that many of the new diesels coming to the market is actually CLEANER than some small petrol cars. Mostly thanks to better quality diesel and increasing engine engineering. So, on a "green" point, I really wouldn't feel bad driving my 3 litre Diesel Hilux when a guy comes FLYING past in his V8 BMW.

My mind has been FORCED to a bigger car. Not because it was my first choice, but because of other drivers and our roads. Also remember, we live in a country which offers fantastic wildlife and rustic destinations. You cannot get to them in a little electric car.

Yes I can understand it in your point of view. Fine I can understand. Nope electric cars cant. Espesh if you are using it for off-road.

1. This is a commercial vehicle. People should not require a similar vehicle for their own personal use
2. Not a silly point at all. Our aim should be to produce and purchase the most effiecient car for our environment. Yes your BMW is a gas guzzler.
3. Yes, there will be fewer of them on the roads. People are going to start producing and purchasing more efficient and smaller variety. Not debatable at all. Compare you Hilux to your BMW. Look at the height, the weight, the size of it. Quite a difference especially to a car like the Mini.
4. You have a point.
5. Im right. I know
6. Yes and rightly so.
7. Currently they disagree, just wait a bit and see. It will become too expensive to drive one. Companies wont be producing as many.

Its not a moot point at all. Someone who I presume has a decent education should see how self centred this can be and see how this affects others and the planet we reside on. Lets fuck up the environment etc. If you use it for 4x4'ing, then sure I can understand. If you only use them on the roads, then its wrong. Just wait for things to change, simply because they have to.

I dont mean to be rude. But this makes me rather annoyed that people cant see this. It is not sustainable. In Neo's case I can see where he is coming from and that is fine enough.

I think your dislike in the reason why people chose these monster trucks is a simple one, and one that I can say I agree with as well. People are buying these SUV's and monster bakkies when they honestly DO NOT NEED THEM, and you are 100% correct to be annoyed with that. I am too!

In my case I can honestly say I'm getting a Hilux to be used for it's actual capabilities and it's safety aspect that it offers us, and not to drive around with to the shops. For that, we have a Toyota Yaris.

But yeah, this is a good conversation and I'm pleasantly surprised that we could have it without anyone flaming the other person. Good stuff to us! :)

I see the current i7 975X has been slashed by more than R1500 in price. So does that mean the new 980X is coming out at the price of R8999 excl. VAT? I HOPE SO! :)

I wouldn't get my hopes up, I'm expecting R10k for this monster. I'd rather budget on 10k and be pleasantly surprised.

I will never buy that type of CPU. i930 and over-clock the pants off it :)

I did give away a Extreme Edition CPU 2 years ago at Rage. The guy has over-clocked it to 4.7 GHz and he says that it still runs everything without causing any CPU bottlenecks.

But the i7 930 is still 4 cores where as the new 980x is 6-cores. Architecturaly the i7 980X is unlike anything available at the moment and it will beat the pants off any i7 930. Especially if you remember that the i7 980X according to early reports is very eager to be overclocked and running it at 4GHz on AIR cooling is very easy.

As much as I love the extreme edition CPU's... its big bucks... I have owned 3 x Extreme edition cpu's in the past, and a year later they have devaluated to almost nothing. My 3.73 Ghz Extreme edition, knocked my wallet for around 11 gorillas. Never again. Its nice, but totally a waste of money.

If they dropped the price significantly, then its of course another thing :)
