New Intel i7 980X Extreme Edition - Oh Yeah - I'm excited.

Just an edition: The pre-order prices for this thing have gone up to $1800 on e-bay in the states already. That means this CPU could reach the R20,000 mark here in South Africa. Absolutely not worth it in my opinion, but dang, it sure is purdy :)

Well so far I think this is going to be the CPU to end all CPU's. The new 32nm chip it's based on is running cooler and faster than ANY other Intel chip currently on the market. It's also using LESS power. Either way, I am very glad I didn't upgrade to an i7 yet because now I have the option to go for something like this! :)

It's gonna be replacing the i7 975XE as Intel's top-line chip, which suggests that the price will be around R15 000 incl. VAT.

Crazy price :p

Well at the moment the 975XE goes for R10,000 (if I buy it for myself). So if this monster comes in at that price it's bought. If not, I'll go for the, hopefully cheaper, 975XE :)

The extreme edition CPUs are normally not worth the price, in terms of bang for buck, but they do deliver unbeatable performance.

So far I'm reading reports that this monster will not be the only 6core CPU. If they can bring out a cheaper 6core CPU I'll buy that and overclock the snot out of it! :)

Of course it won't be the only 6 core CPU from Intel. It will just be the first one :)

And most expensive. So they get all the crazy enthusiasts to buy (I may be an enthusiast, but I'm not crazy enough to buy an R12-R15k cpu...)

omg.. thats about what the rig cost that I just build. i5, 8Gb DDR3, HD5870, 4x 1.5Tb HDDs.

Who buy CPUs like that? Like, who are their target market with something at that price?

I know atleast 6 people who would A) Be in a position to spend that much money on a cpu and B) Be prepared to. If you're a real enthusiast, you'll buy this cpu.

Heck, if I had that amount of spare cash lying around, I would too.

To put it in perspective, anyone running 2 X HD 5870s, such as myself, needs a cpu that powerful in order to remove the cpu bottleneck on these GPUs. Even an i7 975XE @ 4ghz bottlenecks these two cards. So yes, there is actually a need for a cpu this powerful, if you are a true enthusiast.

yeah but are you willing to spend R15000 on this? I still think it is a waste. Get a potent CPU like the normal i7 but not this one. Unless you can easily afford it which you may or may not be able to do.

I think that's why green_orb understands my train of thought as well. It's what defines an enthusiast. Cost is ONLY a factor when you cannot afford it, other than that, it's a must-have CPU. Why would a enthusiast settle for 4 cores, when you can get 6 cores? It's like telling an avid BMW fanatic to rather buy a cheaper Audi...it does NOT make sense to the BMW fan's ears when you talk like that. But someone who is not a BMW or AUDI fan, will think that you're making sense.

Unfortunately for me, and I think I speak for Orb too, we're enthusiasts, and nothing but the best will do.

and why do you need to run 2x HD 5870s at ths point?

It does not take a "a real enthusiast" to buy this CPU, it takes someone with crapload of money to waste. The rest of us build complete puters at that price which can easily run the latest games on full setting in HD.

I guess you need to define what kinda "enthusiast" your taking about? I'm guessing its not gaming but rather someone who just needs to have the latest greatest? I rather spend the money on buying a decent gaming rig and the rest on family, holidays, and other stuff.

Let me, an enthusiast, answer by saying that HD is low res. I won't by a PC monitor that cannot go past 1920x1080. I don't care about the games of today, I care about the games of tomorrow. Bad Company 2 is already showing us that you NEED a massive CPU to run it properly, so it's signaling the end-of-days for dual-core CPU's...we're moving on to quads, but enthusiasts will move to 6 cores.

It's not a lie: any TRUE enthusiast will NEVER be satisfied with something that's NOT the best. An enthusiast will NOT be happy with a 4 core CPU when a 6 core CPU exists.

Enthusiasts ARE people with a crapload of money to waste, not just in the PC arena! Its an expensive hobby that you keep up because your passionate about and it fits in your budget, akin to building performance cars in your garage.

You'll always want the best of the best to keep pushing the boundaries. If you've been keeping up with that, just as Neo said, 2560x1600 is the new "HD" and you need bleeding edge hardware to play at those resolutions. Definitely not bang for buck hardware, you buy it at one hell of a premium, the performance is superb though.

Just think of PC enthusiasts as the big spending "testers" for the next-next-next-gen. Nothing wrong with buying bang for buck hardware and being able to play current games very well, some people just need to take it further because that's one of their passions, and they pay the price.
